Chapter three has a calmer start than the previous two. We also get our first proper interaction with Dain. Dain and Violet have a history filled with fondness. Now that we have gotten to know Dain better and his stance on Violet being in the Riders Quadrant, how do you feel about Dain telling Violet she probably won’t survive?
We officially see the end of Conscription Day in chapter three where over 60 candidates didn’t make the crossing. The surviving now Cadets are sorted into their different squads and wings. It is at this moment that Xaden makes a move and swaps out one of his squads for Violet’s. Why do you think Xaden waits until this moment and what do you think he intends to do now that Violet’s squad is under his wing?
Soon after the sorting, dragons arrive at the war college and perch along the walls. Violet catches a navy dragon looking at her. Do you think that by standing up for herself in this moment, Violet shows the dragons that she might not be as weak as they think and that she might be a worthy rider?

I think Dani meant well by being concerned about Violet. I think he wants her to survive and wants to do whatever he can to make that happen. Ofc, it would be annoying to hear that everyone thinks you’re too weak to make it when you’ve come this far.
I don’t know what Xaden’s agenda is but he probably wants to intimidate Violet (which will result in his loving her no doubt).
As for the dragons, I think it’s great that they come to see the candidates first hand, you want to know as much as you can before allowing a rider to bond with you. I wouldn’t be surprised if his dragon decided to bond with Violet instead. Let’s see.

• I understand where Dane is coming from is a place of concern for Violet and her wellbeing considering she’s one of his oldest friends (which is sweet of him) but at the same time I wanted him to give her a little more credit seeing as she did cross the parapet. Besides he knows her for a long time and he should know by now not to underestimate her. She can handle herself.
• Having Violet in his wing will give Xaden an advantage at observing her and… troubling her. He seems set on intimidating Violet and like he quiet enjoys keeping her on edge/anxious by exerting his power and title.
• I think Violet faired well once the dragons arrived and was brave in standing her ground, perhaps some of the dragons took that into consideration. There’s more to Violet than just outward strength and the navy dragon could sense it.

With my first read, I felt like I understood where Dain was coming from, he was being this big brother protective persona for her. Reading it now, it definitely seems more like he has some kind of sexual feelings towards her and can’t see her as being strong and independent and it grates on my nerves.
With Xaden moving her squad, I think he ultimately wanted to be able to have easier access to her, as her wing leader he could have more control over her and also be able to get more updates on her.
Her strong will in front of the dragons for me was definitely a sign to them that she has inner strength which means more to them than physical strength. She might have physical weaknesses but as her mother said in chapter one, she deals with more pain before lunch than most people have ever experienced and that makes her stronger than most of the cadets.

Chapter 3 & 4: Dain is a walking red flag. Violet is supposedly is best friend, yet he has no confidence in her abilities. He doesn’t see her as this strong independent woman but still as a child who requires help.
Ooo Xaddy baby, I think he wants to be fully in the know about Violet and have a closer look into her connections and how she is progressing.
Yessss absolutely! I love that Violet starts to grow in her own self-confidence and I can’t wait to see that expand. She is a force to be reckoned with.

At first I understood Dain was worried about Violet because he cares about her.
I think Xaden really wants to kill Violet. His role in the college allows him to express his power by making that change.
Violets courage was outstanding , yes I felt she was proving herself as worthy – the navy dragon was absolutely judging her.

I definitely think so! Violet is such a strong character and I love that we get to see hints of the courage and strength that we all know she will possess throughout this book!

I really don’t like how Dain keeps telling Violet that she’s going to die and also that he can’t protect her. I wish he just came out and said he didn’t want her burden or something because she is in a very dangerous situation.
Xanden i loved from the first time i read about him, I’m not sure what about him made him so pleasing but I think I ship him and Violet more and their enemies to lovers situation that I am hoping for.
The Navy dragon saw that Violet didn’t back down and I think she liked her because of it but she know Violet tries to do her best and is intrigued. Hopefully she gets a strong dragon as well.

With my first read, I thought that Dain was being protective over Violet and just wanted to help her. But now it seems as if he doesn’t believe in her and doesn’t think she’s capable of doing this. Especially with the amount of times that he tells her that she can’t do it.
I think it was a strategic move on Xaden’s part to move Violet to his squad at the last minute. He can keep a closer eye on her and kind of st@lk his prey.
Absolutely! I think she proved herself in that moment. She is more than her physical shortcomings. She’s come this far and doesn’t give up easily.

How dare Dain tell Violet she won’t survive? What kind of tough-love B-S is this? If she wasn’t going to survive, she would never have even been able to pass the parapet. Rude.
When Xaden swaps Violet out, I honestly think he just wants to keep an eye on her. She, and her family, are somewhat of a threat to him. This gives him easy access to her should he later decide to end her life.
Dragons – beautiful creatures. But also creatures who I believe can read the true soul of a person. I don’t think it was necessary of Violet to have to prove herself to them. I am sure each dragon can sense character.

If this were my first time reading FW, I would have said that Dain had come from a place of care and love by telling Violet that. However, rereading it, and knowing what I know now (and knowing his true intentions towards Violet), I’m just annoyed that he didn’t have faith in her, or believe she would make it. Violet is a strong character, and even from the first chapter of this book there are people who just don’t trust that she is capable to make it in the Riders Quadrant.
Honestly I think it was a way of making sure he could get to Violet easily (kind of like easy access). That way he’d have a closer look over her and be able to control her more—keep her under the hold of his thumb.
Violet is a strong character, and by showing her strength in front of the dragons I think they would change their view of her being a potential weekling to being someone who can stand their own.

It’s only the third chapter and I hate Dain. Violet knows she is not as strong as other people, no need to keep saying it!
I think Xaden waited until that moment so that Dain didn’t have time to get Violet in other squad. I think his intentions right now is to get payback for his father.
I think so, like they said in the beginning- dragons hate weakness.
