“I just don’t want to see you get hurt again” … “Then don’t watch” Fourth Wing page 101
Chapter 8 sees Violet gaining more confidence. She no longer sees herself as the weak or fragile girl in the first couple of pages. With this new confidence, Violet follows the advice given by Xaden and tosses her blades at Jack Barlowe to show him exactly why she isn’t weak or a problem for the wing. This is also the first time we see Violet choose Xaden over Dain. How do you think this will impact Violet’s relationships with each character?
Violet and Xaden also get close and personal in Chapter 9. Xaden steps up as Violet’s opponent after her original opponent is too ill to fight. Violet quickly learns that she is no match for him. What do you think of this scene? Violet also confesses that she is attracted to Xaden. Do you think this will be a shift in their relationship?
Did you also feel betrayal after Dain went behind Violet’s back to get her into the scribes?

Chapter 8 – 10: I just love how Violet is finally gaining self confidence and learning to navigate her new path. I think Dain’s constant helicopter style of friendship will eventually drive her away and Xaden’s encouragement will draw her in.
I loved that Xaden confronted her with the poisoning of her opponents and showed her how to protect herself, especially for someone her own size. I’m excited to read more about their ‘relationship’.
Dain is getting on my last nerves with his constant push of trying to get Violet into the scribes.

Choosing Xaden over Dain will definitely create a rift in the relationship between Dain and Violet, but he needs to realise that she isn’t some weak pathetic girl – she can handle herself. This one of the many decisions leading to her implied future relationship with Xaden, same with how she admits to finding him attractive. The author wouldn’t have mentioned it for no reason.
And can Dain just stop being a total poephol. LEAVE VIOLET. She is fine. Stop treating her like a baby. Jeez.

I think her confidence in herself is changing her perception of herself and how she views those around her. Especially Dain constantly enforcing how weak she is.
The enemies are lovering! I love the tension.
Yes. After the 100th time of her saying she is staying, why doesn’t he listen? It’s annoying!

To be honest, I really like how Xaden called Dain out on how protecting her by shielding her isn’t going to help her in the long run.
The fight scene changed my view on the Dain vs Xaden. Xaden choose to empower Violence instead of coddle her. I’m for that. I also like that they both choose to keep each others secrets. I don’t like that he is keeping jabs on her through his shadows. It’s giving morally grey which is not my vibe 😂
I didn’t think he betrayed her. I think he is blinded by his obsession to protect her, such that he cannot see the limits.

Her confidence in herself is slowly changing her character and view of those around her. Dain constantly belittles her, which has no benefits for Violet. I like that Xaden calls Dain out on how shielding her isn’t going to help her in the future. Going further into the book, I think Violet will gravitate closer to Xaden, as he builds her confidence, and drift further away from Dain, as he continues to break down her character.
I feel immense betrayal. Dain had no right to go behind Violet’s back, even if in his mind he felt like he was doing something admirable and trying to help. Violet had made it clear that she would stay, and Dain should have respected her wishes.

• I think Violet heeding Xaden’s advice regarding Jack was good. Honestly, Jack needs to be put into his place. Xaden has the approach of not going quietly which I can get behind. While Dain’s is more like “let it go”.
Xaden’s encouragement to be bold will perhaps grow Violet’s self confidence and make her know its okay to be bold. This change might not be welcomed so well by Dain however…• The sparring between Xaden and Violet was definitely tension and chemistry filled. I enjoyed that scene. It felt like this was the kind of moment that evidently showed Xaden feels something towards her which explains why he was aiding her with tips whilst combating. We already knew Violet thinks Xaden is attractive. Excited to read more about these two and their changing dynamics.
• Dain annoyed me when he did that, I still understand his point of view and concern and appreciate his worry but ultimately I’m over it now. He needs to quit pushing Violet for the scribe quadrant when clearly she’s stated many times she’s not going anywhere. Instead Dain should support and motivate her over here. Get over the scribe thing, buddy. Violet is here to stay and she can do it. Just chill.

I have so many feelings about these chapters.
the biggest thing for me is the contrast in how Xaden vs Dain treats her and then also how she grows into trusting Xaden’s advice over Dain’s.
I think Xaden believing in her and giving her advice to help her strengthen as a cadet as well as her attraction to him is going to catapult her forward.
I felt her betrayal with Dain going behind her back and knowing that Xaden is giving her sound advice in a way that still allows her to figure things out her way has made me have more respect for him.
For me it seems like Dain is holding on to the Violet he knew pre-Basgiath and he would rather keep her in that box than help her become a stronger version of herself. Xaden seems to see something in her and is encouraging her to do better and be better and for me that will win every time.

I am loving Violet’s character so much! She is growing so much and proving everyone wrong. Choosing Xaden over Dain will definitely have an affect on both the relationships she has with them, but also indirectly with others.
I loved this scene! The tension was perfect! While Xaden won’t admit it, he does feel something for Violet, why else would he assist her and give her tips. It will shift their relationship. A relationship always changes when feelings are involved.
The betrayal was so upsetting. The fact that Dain still thinks Violet is incapable of looking after herself and more than that, but to succeed.

Now that Violet is gaining confidence, I think her relationship with Dain will become strained. He still sees her as ‘weak’. On the other hand, Xaden has more confidence in her ability to learn.
I think that Xaden stepped up so that Violet wouldn’t have gotten an opponent with an agenda. This scene was a turning point for their relationship – he had the perfect opportunity to kill her, instead he used it as a teaching moment.
Yes! Why is he STILL making decisions for her after she told him she’s staying?!
