Fourth Wing READALONG DAY 5

Artwork by Leigh Croft @cuddlydevil1114

Presentation Day is unlike any other. The air is ripe with possibilities, and possibly the stench of sulphur from a dragon who has been offended. Never look a red in the eye. Never back down from a green. If you show trepidation to a brown… well, just don’t Fourth Wing page 154

Welcome back Cadets. The squad took a much-needed break to collect our thoughts and gather our resources for the next challenge.

Before we continue, let’s check in with how things are going.

On day 4 we stopped at the start of the first major challenge Violet will be facing, the Gauntlet. How are you finding Fourth Wing so far?

Out of all the characters we have been introduced to, who is your favourite and why?

Now that we have gotten to know the two main male characters a bit more, what do you think of each of them? Do you have any strong feelings about either of them? Or are you still waiting to see where things go.

Based on what you’ve learnt about the dragons, which dragon would you like to claim for yourself (if you could)?

It is time to jump into Day Five’s chapters. Chapter Eleven is all about Violet’s attempt at the Gauntlet, except this time it is the real deal. Practice runs are over, and this final run will make or break her hope to become a rider.

Did you think she cheated when she grabbed the rope to climb up the chimney and when she used her knife to scale the ramp?

Dain was very adamant this Violet should not make the attempt at the Gauntlet. Do you think seeing her finish the challenge will change his mind about her and her ability to be a rider?

Chapter Twelve is a walk in the park… or more in a valley… filled with dragons. It is in this chapter that we are introduced to the feathertail dragon. What do you think this dragon is? Do you think it could be a baby dragon? Or do you think it is a kind of dragon that doesn’t often choose a rider?

The Threshing has started. Violet, much like other first years, is on the lookout for the dragon she gets to call hers. Things seem a little down towards the middle of the chapter when Violet overhears Jack Barlowe and his crew. They are going after the feathertail. Violet decides to follow them and protect the feathertail. Do you think Jack and his crew will be successful in getting rid of the feathertail? What do you think will happen now that Xaden has made himself known?

I have so many thoughts, the first being I remember exactly why I was so obsessed with this book for so long and the obsession is definitely being rekindled!

I have a special place in my heart for Rhiannon because she seems so sincere in here friendship with Violet and strong female friendships win me over every single time.

I’m getting more annoyed with Dain while getting more intrigued with Xaden as each chapter passes.

Honestly I would pick a black dragon solely because I have a thing for black, otherwise green because I think they would compliment me.

I don’t think she cheated, surely the gauntlet is also about adaptability and problem solving? That’s exactly what she did and well within the rules in the codex.

At this point I have no hope for how Dain sees Violet, even knowing I’ve read the books before I can’t remember all the details, but my feelings stand.

I remember with my first read I was under the impression that feathertails are just a smaller non violent dragon within the dragon community and at this point we don’t have reason to believe otherwise.

I don’t think they’ll get to the feathertail, if there’s one thing we’ve learned about Violet is that she is strong willed and she would rather die than let them get past her.

I absolutely love it. But that’s no surprise considering I loved it the forst time too. There’s nothing I love more than a fast paced book!

I love Rhiannon’s character and how true she stays to herself (but I’m also going to say I really love Xaden. I can’t not say he’s a favourite of mine!!)

Well well well, speaking of Xaden. I’m honestly just obsessed with that man, and I don’t think I even need to say more about his character. As for Dain, now his character I’d like to kick in the shins, but since that’s not possible I’ll just say that he’a not a character I enjoy at all, but in the best way possible. You know the writing is good if an author can make you hate a character due to their actions.

I think it was smart and resourceful. You gotta do what you gotta do to survive in Basgiath.

I need to scratch my brain here, because I honestly can’t remember what his reaction was knowing Dain, he’s peobably still be concerned about Violet’s safety and survival.

I don’t think it’s a baby dragon, no. I just think their smaller than other dragon species, and perhaps the tamer species among dragons.

No, I do not think Jack will succeed. Violet is strong and I believe her strength will be shown, keeping Jack and his crew at bay and away from the feathertail.

Chapters 11 – 13: Honestly, I just love this book so freaking much!!! This is now my fifth reread and I just can’t get enough!

Violet is definitely my favourite, I love how much character growth she has made just in these few chapters.

I think I would gravitate towards a green dragon, with my personality I think we would bond really well.

I don’t believe she cheated, I think she thought outside of the box. I like how she has been preparing to be a scribe because all this information has really worked to her advantage.
I think Dain will complain no matter what Violet does and always find fault. He will never see her as an equal.

Awww I just love the idea of a golden dragon! Based off of what we have read, they don’t have much information on the Feathertail, so they don’t actually know what it is capable of.

Hehe well having read this before, I already knows how their encounter goes but I’m so excited to see it play out once again!

I love it, there’s a reason this book is my favorite in the series so far.
    I love Violet and Rhinion
And if I had to choose a dragon it will be a black one

This is my third reread and I am still loving this book. I feel each time I discover something new.

My favorite is Violet. I feel she embodies ‘keep going’ and is such an inspiration of not giving up.

I like Xaden a lot more than Dain. He is so off putting.

I would have liked to claim the golden dragon.

I don’t think Violet cheated, she had a point when explaining why she used it. It’s just a matter of using what’s been given to you.

Dain will never change his perspective about Violet, no matter what she does. She has already proven herself so much and still he thinks she can’t do it.

Since I’ve read this already, I know what it is, but thinking back to the first time I read it, it intrigued me so much to find out more about the feather tail.

That scene with Jack and his crew – what a moment of tension! I already know what will happen, but my heart still pounds like I’m reading it for the first time. Now that Xaden has made himself known, you know everything is going to change.

    • I’m throughly enjoying Fourth Wing and I’m eager to continue reading!

    • My favorites are Violet and Rhiannon. They are both loyal, kind and strong individuals. I appreciate loyalty a lot.

    • I like Xaden a bit more for Violet seeing as he pushes her to be better. Dain is sweet but he keeps badgering Violet to run which annoys me.

    • Any dragon would be really cool I think but I’d like the black dragon, Tairn with the signet of power siphoning.

    • i think she adapated and found a way that was outside of the box to help her succeed and its show ingenuity. Its not cheating, she just found loopholes.

    • I doubt it would change Dain’s mind. He is adamant with his opinion regarding Violet staying in the riders quadrant.

    • I don’t believe its a baby dragon or a weak one. I think this dragon has some superior powers to it that they are all unaware of which is why this dragon doesn’t choose a rider often. It’s seeking a special rider maybe?

    • Jack and his crew stand no chance at all. Violet has a determination thats unwavering which I admire she’ll never let them succeed and besides Xaden is now there with her accompanied by his dragon. There’s no way in hell Jack will be able to kill the feathertail. Impossible.

Reading fourth wing with my bookish mates is an experience I will never forget and that I’m so grateful to have been a part of!

Hmm, I don’t have a favourite just yet. I suspect my favourite character won’t even be a person but a dragon.

I have no strong feelings about either of them. I was team Dain but his overprotective nature has turned me neutral.

I would love the gold feather tail or the black dragon!!!

Nay, I don’t think V cheated when she used the rope and dagger. She was resourceful and thought out of the box, that should be rewarded.

Honestly I hope so. It seems equally exhausting for her that Dain keeps underestimating her and her trying to convince that she’ll be okay.

I think the gold feathertail is an observer. It appears smaller than it is, fragile and weak, but I actually think it’ll turn out to be the strongest of them all. Looks can be deceiving and I think it’s made itself less than it is to determine who is a worth rider.

Do I think they’ll be successful? Ofc not! It’s a dragon for goodness sake.

I adore this book so much, reading it a second time is really making me realize so much more.

I think Ridoc is really funny.

Violet used her intelligence to conquer the gauntlet, it’s not cheating- it’s brilliant.

It really should change Dain’s mind. Violet is far more capable than he gives her credit for.

Goldie is definitely a baby dragon.

I thought Xaden was going to kill them all.

The first time I “read” Fourth Wing, was an audiobook, so properly reading it for the first time is a great new experience.

Violet isn’t my utmost favoruite female character ever, and I usually would rather pick a favourite towards the end of the book rather than the beginning. Judging characters too quickly has often let me down. I really do feel that there is a connection between Violet and Xaden, and I just wish Dain would stop being such a nincumpoop.

There’s a difference between cheating and using your knowledge and skills to your advantage….if it’s not against the rules, then it isn’t cheating.

I’m loving my reread of Fourth Wing! My favourite character so far is Xaden.

Since this is the first book, I’m waiting to see how things go.

I would claim the golden feathertail!!!

I don’t think she cheated. Xaden said previously that the right way isn’t the only way. And Violet found “the other way” while staying within the code.

I don’t think Dain’s mind would change about Violet.

Since I know the answer to this question about the golden feathertail…I’ll skip this one to avoid spoilers!

I don’t think that Jack would even care that Xaden is there, as long as he gets his way.
