I did not think that I would love this book as much as I did! The cover is stunning but this is my first book by Lim and I think it’s safe to say that I’m definitely reading Six Crimson Cranes next.

The story was heartbreaking with such an original plot that portrayed strength and persistence. I loved how much this story drew me in, it was fresh and captivating and I loved the animal elements to it.

I’m glad I read this prequel to SCC before I started the series because I feel it gives such a great backstory for Channi who is later known as Raikama. I truly devoured this book and I’m so glad I read it!

We follow Channi, the elder sister of Vanna. During Vanna’s birth, their mother experiences complications, and in an attempt to save her, their father sacrifices Channi to the demon Witch Angma. Channi is saved by the Serpent King. However, she is cursed by Angma with a serpentine face.

This was my first novel by Elizabeth Lim, and I enjoyed this captivating tale. Her writing style flowed easily, and I enjoyed the magical world building of this Asian fantasy.

The strong sisterly bond of love, loyalty, and friendship between Channi and Vanna was delightful. Despite the hardships and hatred experienced by Channi, the found family aspect amongst the serpentines was heart-warming.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read, and I look forward to completing the remaining books from Elizabeth on my TBR shelf.

I have read previous works by Elizabeth Lim, and this one was such an emotional story. These two sisters went through so much. And Channi’s father was so mean to her because of how she looked because of her curse. I enjoyed this book, but at times I got a little bored with it. I loved Ukar, Channi’s snake; he was her best friend, always by her side.

Channi will always protect her sister, Vanna. My heart broke for Channi, the things she went through, and the curse. She was not a monster, but because of her curse, everyone thinks she is a monster.

This was a good book, but as I mentioned, it was rather a little slow for me. But the journey these two sisters took was a hard one to victory. The world-building was impressive, along with the characters. I loved the characters; I think they were well-written.
