I really had hope that he would have understood the message she tried leaving for him.
In his mind, he probably did it and has his own twisted reasonings for doing what he did to try and justufy it. But kithing could justufy what he did. We knew from page one he was irredeemable and I’m glad today’s chapters solidified that.
I think for now she’s still delusional and arrogant enough to think she has the upper hand and won. Once Stova is officially a King, he will make it known to her too that he bows to no one, not even her. She agreed to marry him to gain her power and become queen, little did she know she’ll be left powerless.
It’s a bit of both? We know from Anton that this isn’t the first time Illian has tried anything. So he’s likely also learnt from past mistakes.
No, no one deserves Illian. She has done was she has to do not because she wants to. She’s tried throughout the book to do the right thing knowing that at some point she’d be pushed to kill someone. We know it’s something she’s dreaded the entire time.
She did was she thought was right for the many opposed to the few. Killing Rurik wasn’t even about saving herself. In that specific situation, I may have made the same choice give the choices and info I had.
I’m not sure what to think of her. I only trust Anton.
He wants her to survive but also to know it’s okay to do whatever she must. He has learnt to know how she grapples with things. He also likely knows Illian is dangling him in Vasalie’s face.
I don’t think he’s AS haunted by Emilia. He doesn’t seem bothered at all.. But part of me wonders if he is even just a tiny but I don’t think that man has the capacity to be haunted by Emilia or what he’s done.
Copelan needs to get a grip and remove the blinders from his eyes. He’s too caught up in what happened to Esmee to have his eyes widen to see what’s happening to Vasalie isn’t her choice. Part of me hopes that the look of disgust is actually towards Illian and that Copelan does actually really see what’s happening – especially considering that if Illian has Vas on his arm it means that’s he’s throwing away Esmee again.
I had suspected he may know. A man like her father doesn’t just leave things be and stop the search for his daughter especially if she was part of an important deal. Did I think he tracked her to the extent that he did? No. But also not surprised.
It really is just tragetically poetic. I had mentioned I thought Illian may have been the man she was promised to and even though I felt good at figuring it out, it’s still sickening how these men treated her like property and cattle to be traded.
Queen Aesir will see who the true general is only when it’s too late to do anything.
Vas is trying to buy time but also just to get Anton and her friends free. The only thing she has to negotiate with is herself. We know that she can think in her feet and is smarter than she’s given credit for. Her deal is one of both self preservation but also for those she truly cares for.
We know he isn’t dead, right? Anton tried to tell Vad earlier on I the chapters that Illian can’t do anything to him. I think he was trying to tell her that Illian can’t kill him or he’s protected from death? Maybe I’m reaching but it truly feels that way. Maybe it also has to do with the necklace he had tried getting Vas to take.

Because he doesn’t believe that’s what he did. He honestly thinks he’s doing her a favour.
It was purely to take her father’s place but I think now that the engagement has been announced she’ll start seeing his true colours.
I think it’s because he knows Vasalie. She’s betrayed him once and with the message she left, he knew she would try again.

I think it was a way of comforting her for what she’s done but also a way of giving her courage for what she still needs to do.

I think he’s reached a point were he doesn’t care about her anymore because he doesn’t need her for power. He found another way to gain power.
My jaw was on the floor. I could’ve never thought of this twist.
Definitely, now that they are married she’ll see what a monster he is.
She should’ve known not to trust him. But she tried her best.
Anton will yet survive and safe Vasalie. But I also think that Vasalie might try and kill Illian.

One can only hope he understands the message before it is too late!
Illian ignores it because he doesn’t want to see himself as the villain.She agreed to marry him because she craves power and control and by marrying the General, she has a way to garner both. I’m sure she will realise fairly quickly how much of a mistake she made agreeing to it all.
I think it’s a bit of both. He was made it his life’s mission to accomplish this goal and has thus thought of everything that could possibly go wrong and how he could ensure he succeeds in the end regardless.
Illian has forced her hand on more than one occasion. Even though she has committed murder, I still don’t think that means they deserve each other.
I am still shocked she did what she did. I understand her reasoning, but why not just get rid of the problem right in front of her? I definitely wouldn’t have made the same decision.
It’s interesting that she was the first person after everything that has happened.
I believe Anton is head over heels for her and just wants to see her safe and protected. I love how much he cares for her.
I think he thinks about Emilia and Vasalie often. He wants to get his revenge on his daughter and has just been biding his time.
I’m not surprised he always knew it was her, he knew her for 13 years of her life, she wouldn’t change that drastically.I am so annoyed that fate still dealt her the hand that it did. What are the actual chances that she was supposed to land up with Illian all this time?!?
The truth has to come out, there is no other way. I know Vasalie will do anything to save Anton, so I am not surprised by her deal.

I think as humans we all overthink our choices and think about the different possibilities.
At this point I don’t trust anyone except Anton.
He knows her well and wanted to let her know it’s okay to do certain things to survive. Vasalie is a good person who would overthink a lot even if it’s for her safely but she needed that reassurance that she can put herself first.

She’s under the impression by Stova & Illian that this arrangement will grant her all of the power she could have. She’s blinded by that and also has been bluffed by these 2 men.
I think its a mix of both but more so Illian doesn’t want anything to go wrong hence the massive preparations.
No, Vasalie’s circumstances were different. Her choices were tied whereas Illian freely made his choices.

I suspected the man she was promised to marry all those years ago was Illian so I wasn’t surprised by this reveal but I was surprised to know that her father had kept tabs and knew about her since the beginning. Also this whole arrangement they had was just so disgusting. They viewed her as some sort of THING to be owned and traded. I felt so bad for Vasalie.
Hoping it does! I love how she worded her “well wishes” for them. We love a sassy and smart girly.
I understand her desperation and it makes sense that she said that.
With Illian, things arent always so simple… but I hoped that he had a shred of decency in him and would honour what he said but thats wishful thinking.

1. I hope he actually finds the message! Im sure he would have been smart enough to understand if he did read it.
2. Illian’s had his own plans for Vas for a long time so in his mind, he didn’t actually throw her away. He also felt justified in his actions
3. Stova probably fed her lies about the power she would gain from ascending to the throne. He did say that he groomed her for years. I think she’s going to find out right after the coronation.
4. I think he’s very intelligent and has planned meticulously for every possible outcome. I also do think he understands Vas to some degree and knew what she’d try to do.
5. I don’t think it’s true but her actions were horrible and it does complicate things so much. I dont think anyone had the right to make a decision about who got to live and then justifying the action by saying its for the greater good. Anyone can condone bad decisions with that in mind. And I guess it does make her slightly like Illian in that regard. I think her intentions are different though and she genuinely does seem like a good person.
6. I dont think I would have been able to take Rurik’s life. It’s an impossible situation though and some level of self preservation does kick in.

I feel like he might be protected in some way (from death) because he did try to reassure Vas that Illian couldn’t hurt him. So fingers crossed that he wasn’t just trying to protect her.

By the looks of it, King Rurik wont even get the message in the first place.
I dont know, I am still very uncertain about this weird obsession he has with Vasalie. It doesnt make sense to me yet.
Princess Aesir seems to only focus on her one objective and because she has this need to remove her father from power and take it for herself, she is blind to the people she is entrusting with this scheme. Or maybe they are all just meant for each other those three lol
I think it is just his need to ensure his own victory – considering how many times he has already tried to do this and it always failed because he never could quite seem to kill Anton first.
No I do not believe that, King Illian has taken advantage of her since the day they met, molded her to his liking, threw her in a prison cell to show her just how easily he can ruin her and then “heroically” release her only to dangle freedom in from of her face. She is nothing like him, he is a monster.
I probably would have in that scenario too, although I have a feeling Anton really cannot die, if this is true, we do not know that at that point and so there is no other option for her.
I dont really think anything of Sana, shes just a side character.
I think that Anton is trying to tell her something and I think that it is what I have already guessed or something along those lines.
Honestly, no. Her father is a cruel brute of a man who I am sure has never experience remorse or regret a day in his life.
Because Copelan is just a bitter asshole, I am sorry to say. He really is getting on my nerves now.
I think its scary. That her whole entire life, she has been followed by this man who wants to control her.
It was and was also not a shock. I did not realise the extent to which Illian and General Stova were working together but I did think that maybe Illian was the man she had been betrothed to.
I am not sure how the rest of the book is going to play out but I know its going to be good.
I applaud her for trying but Illian was never going to give her what she wants.

Rurik seems so out of everything happening right under his nose, so absolutely not.
Illian doesnt think that he threw her away as im sure this was some part of his ’big’ plan.
Princess Aesir is probably in on this plan of Illians and General Stova and I just know she will regret it sooner than we all think.
His preparedness comes from his childhood and that constant pressure to be on top of things. I dont think its from knowing Vas very well but rather because of what he went though as a child.
Vas was put in a bad situation and had to learn to survive in whatever way she could and so has Illian to a certain extent however i dont think they both deserve each other.
I struggle with this one as i really dont know. how do you even make the correct choice?

Antons request makes me think that he has no idea how to get out of this and that Vas must do whatever she thinks is right.
General Stova is a cruel man who doesnt seem to have a conscience so i dont think him killing Esmee even bothers him.

Freeing Anton likely comes with strings attached. Illian never gives without expecting something in return, so this could be part of a larger, more dangerous scheme.

I didn’t think Rurik was smart/astute enough to interpret the message Vasalie left. If anything, the man would’ve thought it was a declaration of war against him because his general’s cap was pinned to a flag.
In Illian’s mind, he didn’t throw her away. He probably viewed what he did as merely keeping her out of sight and somewhere “safe” where he knew she couldn’t be harmed by others (or for any other rationalisation that ignores the reality of what he did to her).
I think she agreed to marry the general because it meant she would take over the throne sooner/ become Queen of Brisendale instead of just its princess, which would give her more power than what she currently has. I think as soon as General Stova shows his true self when they’re alone (and now that he has what he wants, the title of King), and when Illian does nothing to stop Stova, she’ll realise she was tricked by both of them.
I think it’s a combination of both. We already know from Illian’s arbitrary imprisonment of Vasalie and meticulous planning that involved framing her for murder (and forging a motive), and from his plans to dethrone his brothers and plans to make his Brisendali ally a king, that he’s really strategic and cunning. I think he both knows Vasalie and planned for all outcomes to ensure that the events play out the way that he wants them to.
No, I don’t think it’s true. When Illian kills people or has them killed, he does so without remorse because they’re either pawns or collateral damage for his plans. When Vasalie betrayed people and poisoned and killed a person, it was out of necessity/ a need to survive. Unlike Illian, she felt a lot of guilt and remorse over her actions, always vowing to rectify the situation after she carried out each deed on Illian’s behalf.
Even though she was between a rock and a hard place, I was kind of expecting her to come up with an innovative solution we hadn’t thought of yet (like that time with Gustav and the poison). I figured Anton couldn’t be hurt/ killed based on the small snippets of his dialogue before he kept getting cut off, and he did tell Vasalie not to believe what Illian said. So if I were in her shoes, I think I would’ve taken the risk of telling Rurik/ taking him out without knicking major arteries and hoped it would’ve worked out. But I can understand why she felt like she didn’t have a choice and would’ve rather saved Anton than a man she hardly knew, regardless of if he’s a crown or not.
I think she’s like Brigitte: trying to get both Vasalie and herself out of the situation as unscathed as possible while still knowing she’s serving Illian and needs to be careful of the man’s wrath.
I thought it was a great sentiment, but considering how Anton knows Vasalie’s “selfish” actions caused her an immense amount of pain and guilt throughout the book, Anton should’ve known that wasn’t something Vasalie would’ve done.
I don’t think he is. Judging by his comment to Vasalie later about how he hopes Emilia is watching to see how badly she failed, I think he has the same amount of remorse as Illian does about any of his horrible deeds (so none at all). His relationship with Emilia was one of control. So I think if Stova remembered Emilia during his wedding, it was just to remember that the last time he got married it was to her, but he isn’t haunted by her memory the same way Vasalie is.
I wonder if it’s disgust with himself and he’s projecting it onto her because then it means he doesn’t have to take accountability for his role in what Vasalie is currently going through. Either way, he’s definitely letting his views and assumptions of her past behaviour cloud the reality that he had a part in (he was there when Illian ordered Vasalie to be stripped from her freedom, so Copelan’s disgust is probably a way for him to shift his culpability away from himself.
That was a plot twist I didn’t see coming. In the back of my mind, I entertained the possibility, but his behaviour around Vasalie (never looking at her directly or addressing her as if she’s just another member of staff) kept making me second-guess whether or not he knew her. He made it seem like he didn’t know who she was, so for him to say he knew all along? Mind blowing.
I thought it was really sad. Imagine thinking you’re running away from your abusive father and carving a life for yourself away from him, only to find out you played right into their hands the whole time. In escaping the fate they carved our for her, she ran right towards it. I had a feeling the man Vasalie was promised to “across the sea” was Illian, but having it confirmed in such a brutal way made it feel like Vasalie has no agency at all, even during the moments where she thought she was asserting her autonomy in escaping both her father and Illian.
Oh most definitely. Aesir thinks she knows the man she married, but the General only showed her the version of himself that he would need to become king. He kept the real/ abusive parts of himself hidden. Now that he has what he wants, I have no doubt Aesir will meet a similar fate as his wife that Emilia did.
I actually thought it was a pretty beneficial deal on her part. Vasalie gets to have her freedom in a limited capacity as Illian’s wife while fulfilling her nightly duties as his wife (rightfully guessing that’s one of the aspects of being his that he likes, based on what she saw in the tunnels that one time). It was a genius way to adapt to the circumstances of a fate she viewed was inevitable. The only issue with the deal is that it benefits her more than it benefits Illian, who already has what he wants and has leverage over her.
When I read this initially, I was in a state of shock. Then I remembered all the times where Anton tried to communicate that he can’t get hurt, only to be cut off. And I remembered the myth about him coming back to life in his youth. So I thought he’d surprise us all by coming back to life, maybe becoming stronger after death in time to save the day and take Illian down with Vasalie’s help.

Anyone agreeing to marry General Stova has a problem. She probably thinks he’ll be able to give her power since he will sit in a seat of great power.

I doubt that her father is thinking of Emilia. He is greedy and is getting what he wants, more power.
Copelan isn’t observant or caring towards Vasalie; if he were, he would have known this isn’t what Vasalie wants to do, but what she must do.
My jaw dropped!! I couldn’t believe he knew it was her all along. I thought he gave up on her.
Everything around her was so orchestrated that I couldn’t see it turning out any other way.
Perhaps time will show the general’s true intentions, and Queen Aesir will see it.
I like that she didn’t give up and still tried to make a deal. But Illian is set on this course of action and won’t be persuaded.

I honestly didn’t 😭 I had to reread that passage several times trying to picture what Vasalie was trying to do and that’s WITH me knowing the truth. I just hope the characters are smarter than I am.
Illian is living in his fantasy with his version of Vasalie – anything contradicting that fantasy will be ignored. Illian is very manipulative and will do what he can to get his way.
Control, power & being feared. I don’t think there’s anything more to it. It blinds you completely and Princess Aesir will 100% feel the burn when it comes back to bite her.
It’s a mixture, I guess. He knew Vasalie from before the imprisonment, but the Vasalie now is definitely more determined and secretive. Illian might be one step ahead but something Vasalie does will 100% catch him off guard.
Absolutely not. Nope. No. Illian is absolutely disgusting and acting on his own whims. Vasalie is acting out of desperation from under his control. That is NOT the same.
I would’ve been so desperate to do anything other than killing King Rurik, but granted that was the only option she had, there wasn’t really any other choice. It was Anton or Rurik and obviously you’d choose Anton.

Not at all… Emilia was likely just a means to an end for him. I doubt he still even thinks of her.
I think Copelan is also living a sort of “fantasy” in his head with Vasalie and now that she’s unknowingly deviating from his “plans”, he’s mad. His jealousy is taking over and leaving no room for cognitive thinking.

That one, not as much. I’m not surprised that Illian was and always has been involved, but I am absolutely disgusted to learn that Vasalie has been groomed to be Illian’s bride from a very very young age. I’m really disheartened about it all but also really glad it didn’t play out how it was “planned” to.

I understand it’s a desperate situation BUT VASALIE NO 😔😭 I was so tense reading this chapter.
