The first chapter made me so sad on Vasalie’s behalf. Not only is she imprisoned, chained, unable to have freedom of movement even in her cell with no sense of time, but the guards are so rude and mean in the way they talk about her. The ways she described herself as a husk/ corpse was also really saddening.
We know from a later chapter that the injuries she got as a result of how she was treated in the prison will stay with her for the rest of her life and it’s implied that the most she can do is learn to manage the pain and live her life with it.
My theory is that she was probably a political scapegoat for the advisor’s assassination. They needed someone to take the fall for his death in the eyes of the public.
I think he’s shown himself to be a cruel king in the interactions we’ve seen between him and Vasalie outside of her cell, so he probably wanted to do it just to be cruel/ break her spirit and ensure her silence.
He’s not merciful, he’s controlling. Calling her “his” is just a way to remind her of how much her life and fate belongs to him.
I’d seek freedom outright the way that she did (and also in writing), but I’d secretly plot my revenge against him and strategise a way to get it.
I thought it was really nice for Vasalie to have someone who believes her and believes in her. (I love Brigitte’s character.)
I have no clue. Considering the information fed to us about Illian, and how he treats Vasalie, it baffles me because it doesn’t fit in with the image I have of him in my head. But since I think the author may be gearing up for a love triangle between Vasalie, Illian and Anton, I’m sure it’s to make him more sympathetic (and keep in mind the idea that he valued her so much she was irreplaceable or something along those lines) so that when the time comes, we don’t completely view him as a villain.
Judging by the snippets of Vasalie and Emilia’s past, I’m sure it’s domestic abuse. He probably abused Emilia to the point of death.
I think that for Vasalie it was a reminder of her role and what she once was. For Illian, he’s probably trying to recreate the magic of Vasalie’s dancing by having the same song play and getting the dancers to dance the dance she once created.
The result of her dance attempt made me so sad on her behalf, and angry at Illian for putting her in a position where she can no longer dance the routine she used to love dancing.I hope so, but I know it would be better for her to be more subtle in her rebellions against him in the future.
My theory is that Anton remembers or knows Vasalie and was fond of her, so Illian knows that the only dancer that would be acceptable for his plan would be Vasalie.
I thought it was admirable. I like how it portrays chronic illness and society’s view of people who aren’t able bodied, but I loved how it showed that if you’re unable to see a person beyond their disability, you’ll miss everything else that makes them who they are, and you’ll miss out on something (and someone) awesome.
She’s probably trapped in Illian’s part of the kingdom through some contract with the king that she can’t break. Or Illian decided to trap her in his kingdom as petty revenge against Anton and Brigitte’s daughter for the millen trade being so taxing on his part of the kingdom… Or maybe she’s a spy for Anton and can’t leave until her mission is complete (the cooler but less likely option).
I thought it was cool. I kept wondering how she’d be able to impress Illian, and was worried about her, but she came up with such a creative solution. And I love how the use of millen in her new dance routine is a nod to Brigitte’s story and daughter. It’s not just that it’s a tribute to the ingredient that Brigitte’s daughter used to be able to express herself, but it’s a way to remember Brigitte and her kindness (a kindness that gave her hope to start dancing again, to see her disability not as a weakness but as part of her now). When Vasalie starts her journey, she says she’ll never forget Brigitte, and incorporating millen in her dances in future will definitely remind her of the woman who gave her the hope and freedom to express herself through dance again. So I thought that was really cool.
It doesn’t excuse what he did to her. In fact, I think him acting cold in front of everyone was just a reminder that he puts on a front to appear uncaring of her, but he can freely show just how obsessed he is with her without anyone else watching. It would be weird if he accused her of murder, imprisoned her for years, didn’t absolve her of her supposed crime, threatened her if she didn’t go along with his spying plan…and then behaved in a way that showed his obsession for her (as his plaything) in public. It would ruin the narrative he’s created about her that has stuck for the past two years.
Probably so that she can report back to him about the information she’s acquired as a spy. And to have her perform just for him (he seems like a jealous person, so the idea of her dancing for others might put him on edge, and he might want to remind himself he owns/controls her by having her dance just for him that night).
It does. The descriptions of the Isle make it sound like such a vibrant place!

I absolutely love a prison cell opening scene, it’s one of my most favorites! I was hooked from the first sentence. Its atmospheric and sets the scene so well leaving you wondering why she is there! From this scene, you gleen that she has definitely been their for quite a while but at this point, I was still not sure.
Her treatment in prison was horrendous. Confining her to a chain that allowed for little to no movement is so cruel. It must have been extremely painful and she probably will have lasting physical damage because of it, spine and joint damage, circulation, muscle atrophy etc.
I have no idea why she was made a scapegoat but I do think it was all part of King Illians plans. He seems to one of those very calculating, very manipulative types. Get her to trust him, make himself her world, use her for his gain. He is controlling and obsessive and that’s why he also refers to her as his, like his property, his to do with as he pleases.
I think I would definitely go for revenge in this situation, I am not the forgiving sort. That is 2 years of her life where she rotted away in a prison cell, her life and her joy ripped from her.
Im not sure I know enough about Vasalie’s father to guess at what he is done other than the mentioned abuse but it can’t be good. Maybe he ran some kind of scheme that ripped off the crown?
I think that anything the king does from this point is all to manipulate her, to remind her whose in charge, to remind her what she once was and how easily he can’t take it from her.
I’m impressed with how far she has come, in her condition I would not be walking never mind dancing at all.
I love that Vasalie’s has some sass to her, even when she’s been broken by this man.
I think the king either wants to usurp his brothers or turn the rest of the kingdoms against them.
Brigitte’s story almost had me in tears, her daughter is so strong and so beautiful and I couldn’t imagine living the life she is forced to. I loved her determination.
Not sure why she cannot be with her daughter though but I’m sure it has to do with the king, of course.
Vasalie definitely has spirit, I loved that she used the flour in her dance to distract from her shortcomings by making a spectaclur scene! So clever.
I don’t trust the king. I don’t believe his shift towards her is anything more than him trying to manipulate her.
I wouldn’t put it past him to blame her for whatever havoc he is going to cause at the gathering but I don’t know yet.

That opening line had my attention immediately, it seemed as though she had been down in the dungeons for quite some time, I just didn’t expect it to be that long!
Vasalie’s lack of movement will most definitely affect both her muscle and nervous system, leading to severe damage.

I think her father is an awful man, and he must be guilty of domestic abuse and more. One can only hope she gets given the chance, but I have a feeling it won’t be in this kingdom.
I think the king is a cruel, vindictive individual who gets great satisfaction from seeing others in pain both physically and mentally. I think it was definitely a mind game he was playing by making other dancers, dance the song she choreographed.
I think Vasalie will only getting bolder as this book continues. Her strength to overcome difficulties is truly inspiring.

I think the king is a complex character, one I’m not sure I won’t want to get to know better. I think he wants her for himself so he can try to either pursuade her to stay or get rid of her permanently.
I am very eager to read more about this Isle and The Master of Revels. I think we are about to get insight into more of what is going on behind the scenes.

The first chapter definitely pulls you in and leaves you with a lot of questions. This was honestly a great start to a book. I thinks Vasalie has been imprisoned for a number of weeks now, months even. But I don’t think it’s more than 2 months.
Vasalie definitely lost a lot of muscle and with that the ability to use her muscles fully. This must have also affected her posture immensely as well as her joints because they are stuck in a certain position most (if not all) the time.
I think she was punished because she was so close and protected by the king. Someone might have framed her to create space between her and the king.
From what has been revealed about their relationship, Vasalie might be more than just a dancer to him. I think he knows Vasalie didn’t commit the crime, so therefore, his feelings hasn’t changed. He still cares for her even though he did decide to punish her.
I think he’s going to use this opportunity to give her some freedom (from the cell) but still keep her under his thumb. Of a certain reason I’m not sure yet.
I would’ve chosen freedom because revenge holds uncertainty. Running away is easier than committing treason and then having to go on the run.
I think Brigitte knows more than she leads on. She might be closer to Illian than we think and knows that he knows Vasalie didn’t commit the crime.
Like I said before, I think Vasalie means way more to the prince than he is showing, He truly cares about her even if he doesn’t show it and that’s why he hasn’t replaced her.
Her father must have abused her and Emelia. We do find out that he tried to sell her. If Illian truly cares about Vasalie and he tries and pursue her, I think he will punish her father for what he’s done to her.
I think he misses Vasalie performing the song for him and now the only way for him to hear and see the performance is by using others. But I think he sits there imagining it’s Vasalie.
Vasalie really tried her best but due to her ailments she’s unable to perform on a level she’s used to. Knowing she might have failed, she still tried and that says a lot about her spirit even if she’s very negative in her circumstances as well.
She’s definitely a fighter so I do believe she’ll keep on putting up a fight but also knowing when to backdown when needed.
Yes, he has trusted her with a lot in the past and I believe he still does. Now that I’m thinking about it, he might actually be sending her to find the real killer because I still believe he knows she’s innocent.
The story was very sad but it is one of hope, reminding us that there are people who go through equally as bad (or even worse) situations than you and they still find it in them to get up and try again.
Right now I have no idea, not even a hint. But it might have something to do with Illian and Antons’s rivalry.
I think this is an amazing idea. She knew her choreography wouldn’t be enough so she made a plan to still make the performance power and memorable.
This kind of confirms it for me that Illian cares for her in a special way. He keeps his distance in front of others (is this to protect her?) but he still shows her his true self (to a certain extent).
Because by then Vasalie might have solved the murder (still just a theory of mine) and he will then get to share his true intentions and feelings with her.

I definitely thought she was there for quite a few months, so when I found out the truth, I felt awful for her.
I knew that staying like that would weaken her muscles and bones, possibly leading to even more serious issues.
Honestly, I have no idea why it happened. The only reason I can think of is that the king needed someone to take the fall, maybe he played a bigger role in it all and needed an easy target.
He seems like the kind of person who lifts himself up by putting others down just to show his power.

1) The first chapter is hauntingly atmospheric because it throws us right into Vasalie’s isolation which makes us as the readers feel her disorientation and despair. Based on her blurred sense of time, the degradation of her physical condition, and the guards’ casual cruelty, it seems she’s been imprisoned for many months, perhaps even over a year. The way time has unraveled for her emphasizes how much she’s suffered and been forgotten.
2) I think in terms of P]physically, she’ll likely suffer from atrophied muscles, poor circulation, and chronic pain. However I think she will suffer even more psychologically due to the trauma of such severe restriction and torture which will leave lasting effects like hypervigilance, anxiety, or distrust. It may take a long time for her to feel fully free again, even if the chains are removed.
3) It seems like it was a political move. As the Jewel, she may have been seen as a threat to the power dynamics at court and blaming her for the advisor’s death could have been a convenient scapegoat situation and especially if someone needed her removed for their own gain.
4) I believe this was a act of manipulation or cowardice on the kings. The king may have been forced to act to preserve appearances, power, or to please factions at court despite knowing her innocence. It also might suggest deeper betrayal from the kind like how he feared her influence more than he admitted.
5) Calling her “his” feels possessive rather than affectionate and it strips her of agency and self-worth. His mercy only seems conditional and performative because real mercy would’ve meant freeing her and not keeping her caged physically or emotionally.
6) While revenge is tempting, especially after that kind of betrayal it will only be a never ending circle of revenge and true healing might come from finding freedom and building a new life.
7) It’s an intriguing line where it is both threatening and understanding. It suggests that Brigitte may know the truth or at least doubts the official story. It places her as a potential ally or a cautious observer who hasn’t fully decided what she believes yet.

The opening chapters immediately had my attention caught!! This author has such a way with words. I absolutely love the little author letter at the beginning advocating for more disabled main characters – I 100% agree!
From the description of her physical and mental state, I definitely suspected that it’s been quite a while. It’s so heartbreaking to have read in a later chapter that it’s been two whole years of isolation and a lack of movement…
We read later on that Vasalie has severely restricted movement and muscle atrophy due to this inhumane treatment. It was absolutely devastating reading about the effects and I’m so impressed that the author managed to convey this feeling so well through words alone.
I suspect there is either an irrelevant cause that Vasalie has somehow gotten involved in or something from her past came creeping back.
Here, again, I suspect ulterior motives are at play. It is clear the king still “treasures” her after her release, so maybe it was an extreme method of control or something completely different.
It feels malicious. I’m not sure that the king truly cares for her as a person but rather for the purpose she serves. Something is definitely off here…
I would most definitely seek freedom. Staying in someone’s life simply for the purpose of revenge only hurt you more in the long run. My freedom and happiness would be enough for me.
Brigitte seems to know that it was a false conviction… I instantly trusted her as a character upon her introduction and this line alone solidified that trust. I think she’ll be of great help to Vasalie in this story.
I suspect that the king has this obsession with Vasalie that far surpasses her replacement. She is already perfectly “controllable” and he has spent years “crafting” this version of her that he likes.
It is mentioned that her father was an abusive man. Further than that, I can only guess.
It brings an uncomfortable feeling. It feels like he’s trying to show her she’s replaceable without actually replacing her. I’m not quite sure how to feel about it.It was heartbreaking to read… Seeing her be so determined to find that passion again yet seeing her body fail her again and again is so sad. Again, I commend the author for conveying this feeling so well.

I have a feeling it is due to her past or her family. That is the only reason I can think of for why he is so desperate to send her specifically.
It reflects reality so well and that’s the sad truth. People who look or act “different” are treated as such when nothing else warrants such behaviour. I’m so so happy to hear that her daughter found her place in the world!
I genuinely can’t think of a reason why. Maybe there’s something that keeps her there or maybe something is being used against her. With a daughter so close to a different king, I would’ve thought she could easily be free to roam.

The first chapter immediately drew me in. She has definitely been there to the point where she’s lost track of time and lost track of her hope. My first assumption was that it was over year at the least.
There would be a lot of negative affects to her body, specifically her joints and muscles. I’m not sure of medical terms but we know that she likely lost muscle mass and movement which doesn’t just affect the muscles themselves, but the rest of the body. Not to mention the mental and emotional toll this would take.
I’m very suspicious of this I’m wondering if this was a way for the king to keep Vasalie away from eemveryone else. She mentions that she was his jewel and then sleep find out she was never replaced. I wonder if there was actual care for her. But I’m also thinking it was to save himself somehow. Did someone else want her? Why does he need her now? I think we need to find out more info. He’s hiding so many things. Maybe someone planted a seed against her.
He would need to put on a show of punishing her because she was publicly his Jewel.
She’s his in the sense of property, nothing else. It’s a show of dominance and control and an intimidation tactic. He obviously knows she cared about him at one point and is likely also wanting to trigger that.
I think I’d seek freedom, but from what we’ve learnt if the king i don’t think he’s merciful or willing to let her go.. So I’d choose revengeas an act of self preservation.
It was a way of letting Vasalie knows that Bridgette doesn’t believe what she’s been accused of. Also, it may imply that others don’t believe it either. It’s also a subtle way of showing Vasalie she has someone in her side.
I’ve been wondering why he wouldn’t replace his jewel. I was to say he cared for Vasalie and no one came close / he couldn’t bear to replace her, but I’m too skeptical to believe this considering how he treated her in the end.
I’m not sure exactly but I loathed him for what he did to Vasalie. I hope she’s able to frag him before court or find justice in another way.
Playing the song was intentional and malicious. He knew what it would trigger within her especially seeing others dance to it with her choreography while she’s a shell of who she was.
She was brave for the attempt. The result from the king was another slap in the face.
She won’t only remain this bold, but she’ll become bolder and more fierce. I can’t wait to see thus character development.
There’s someone about Vasalie only he knows. She also seems extremely smart and able to think on her feet. We also don’t know what’s happened during the years she’s been imprisoned. Maybe one of his brothers were secretly taken with her and the king knows she’s a weak spot or a way in.
The story about Bridgette’s daughter was both heartbreaking but also powerful and inspiring. Im not 100% sure why she can’t be with her yet but I have suspicions….
Using Millen shows how smart and strategic she is. Maybe why she’s perfect for what he wants her to do. She knew that she needed to account for her weakness and came up with a way people would be distracted by the spectacle and performance and not be focused on any shortcomings.
His reaction proved that there’s so much more we don’t know and there’s a reason he chose her. And never replaced her.
Having her to himself on the last evening is a powerplay and intimidation tactic. He’s trying to get under her skin and play on her old feelings.

Her statement to the Master of Revels again proved how quick thinking she is and why she was chosen. It also shows us what a powerhouse she is going to be. I can’t wait for her to gain all her confidence back.

Already these first four chapters are written in a way that captures your attention, makes your soul yearn just like Vasalie is yearning for freedom.
The art is absolutely beautiful and makes me appreciate these chapters even more.
Based on the guards reactions, she must have been in the cells for a long time, especially taking in her physical state.I think with the restriction to movement, much of Vasalie’s body will grow weak, she’ll lose strength and become frail.
I think Vasalie was framed by the king, or was framed to take the blame if it’s someone the king knows and wants to protect.
Perhaps he punished her because he has the power to and gets some kind of joy being able to exercise this hold on someone.Calling her ‘his’ was a taunt and just another slap in the face, throwing salt in the wound knowing he has control over her.

The descriptions of the Isle of Anell is wonderful, I can just imagine how Vasalie must have felt seeing all of these things after being a prisoner for so long. l think Vasalie being bold to the Master of Revels is showing already she’s not giving up easily.

Q: What do you think of the first chapter? We are
introduced to our main character in a cell. How long do you think she has been there based on the reaction of the guards and her inability to tell time?
A: I thought it was between 6-12 months, not two years! My jaw dropped when I read that part. I feel so bad for her.
Q: During her isolation and imprisonment, the warden of the prison removes links from Vasalie’s chains. He removes links to the point that Vasalie could barely move. What sort of after-effects do you think she will be dealing with?
A: Definitely muscle detoriation at the very least. Nerve damage. Mental health damage. Infections. I can imagine there being a long, never-ending list.
Q: Why do you think Vasalie was blamed for the death of an advisor?
A: To cover something or someone else up. Or maybe the king took too much liking to her?
Q: Why, despite knowing her innocence, did the king still punish Vasalie?
A: He is most likely covering something up.
Q: What do you think of the king calling Vasalie his? Is the king truly merciful?
A: No. He seems very possessive and selfish. No human being should go through those punishments.
Q: If you were offered anything in Vasalie’s situation, would you go for revenge? Or would you also seek freedom far away from the king who betrayed you?
A: No, I would like to get as far away from him as possible too. Revenge will be useless because he is so protected and powerful.
Q: What do you think of what Brigitte said to Vasalie? “I know who you are and what you are said to have done.”
A: I think Brigitte knows the truth and is on her side, but circumstances are not allowing her to say as much out loud.
Q: Why do you think the king never replaced his Jewel?
A: I think he was in love with her and could not find a worthy replacement. But he also knows that she’s innocent. Maybe he was always planning on bringing her back and it was all an elaborate plan? Spiraling.
Q: What crimes do you think Vasalie’s father could be guilty of? Do you think she would have the opportunity to drag him before a court?
A: Murder or embezzlement maybe? It sounds like Emilia is dead so maybe her murder? We’ll just have to find out!
Q: What do you think of the king playing the song Vasalie had written for him and watching other dancers follow the choreography of the song?
Vasalie tries dancing for the first time since her imprisonment. What do you think of the result of her dance attempt?
A: It seems like it was a cruel thing to do at first but I think he was trying to motivate her in his own, sick way. It did work to some level. I feel so bad for Vasalie having to see her pupils dancing to her song when she can’t.
Q: Vasalie subtly insults the king. Do you think she will remain this bold?
A: She is feisty so I imagine so.
Q: Why do you think the king truly needs Vasalie and is unable to replace her?
A: He trusts her and knows that she wants her freedom more than anything.
Q: What do you think of Brigitte’s story about her daughter?
A: I thought it was really heartbreaking yet inspiring, something Vasalie had to hear in order to gain strenand motivation. It’s so sad that Brigitte can’t be with her daughter but I’m hoping we’ll see a change to that.
Q: Why do you think she can’t be with her daughter?
A: I assume the king doesn’t want to lose her as an employee, and he cannot buy her daughter because she is employed by one of his brothers.
Q: Vasalie completes her dance for the king in a surprising fashion. What do you think of her plan that involved Millen?
A: It seemed like a quiet form of rebellion, using something that he can’t have for himself and that is expensive.
Q: The king has a fascinating reaction. In front of the courtiers, he acts cold, but once they are dismissed, it is as if he is a different person. What do you think of this shift?
A: I don’t like it or him right now. Hoping for a redemption arc but he doesn’t deserve anything from her right now.
Q: Why do you think the king wants Vasalie for himself on the last evening of the Gathering?
A: I’m hoping for nothing nefarious but I have a bad feeling. Maybe to say goodbye to her in private? Hopefully?
Q: Do you agree with Vasalie that the Isle of Anell sounds magnificent?
A: Yes! She’s used to opulence by living in the palace so it must be gorgeous.
Q: What do you think of Vasalie’s bold statement to the Master of Revels?
A: I think it might pay off. -
1. It seemed like she had been there for a long time, judging by her state and inability to walk. I was guessing at more than 2 years.
2. I imagine that walking is going to be so difficult if she isn’t able to move about.
3. I think someone pinned the blame on her and set her up to take the fall so they could also hurt the King.
4. Given how Illian views Vasalie as a possession, I am assuming he saw or heard something that seemed like Vasalie was not his so he decided to punish her. The “if I can’t have her, no one can” mentality.
5. Initially I think the anger would win and I’d consider revenge. But eventually I think I’d feel better leaving it all behind instead and starting anew.
6. Her statement was so important. She implied that she didn’t believe what Vasalie was accused of and in doing so.
7. Likely because he never found anyone who enticed him like Vasalie did, and also because she was still alive and he had planned to exonerate her when he needed to. Or it could be that he has given his favorite a new title.
8. Sounds like domestic abuse but I have a feeling he is someone of authority so I’m not sure if she’d be able to bring him to justice. Hence why she chose to run instead.
9. I think he was being cruel and reminding Vasalie of how far she had fallen by taunting her with her own song and choreography. I think Vasalie’s first attempt was a sad reminder of how much she has lost (which made me so mad at Illian for doing it to her).
10. I hope so. I hope she gets even bolder!
11. Maybe he figured out something about her past and plans to use it to his advantage. I’m also eager to learn what his angle is.
12. It was so heartwarming. I do feel like we might see Brigette or her daughter later on. I am so curious about why she isnt with her daughter either!
13. I think this showed her ability to be creative and work with her circumstances. She listened to her body and didn’t push it beyond what it is ready to do. She’s mindful and observant and knew how to work her audience.
14. He puts up a front for the court but still wants Vasalie to lower her defenses so he acts differently when it’s just the two of them. I think it’s manipulative.
15. This was such a “huh” moment for me because I have absolutely no idea. I feel like it’s going to take me by surprise!
16. It does, and I can’t wait to explore the Isle with Vasalie as we continue!
17. I loved the boldness! I think their interaction was sooo interesting! I immediately wanted to start the next chapter!

It is dark and gripping starting off with Vasalie in prison.
Probably months or more. She’s weak and confused, which shows classic signs of long-term isolation.
After effects such as severe physical weakness, pain, loss of movement. Emotionally, she likely feels powerless and dehumanized.
She was probably blamed because she was an easy scapegoat, or due to politics or jealousy.
The king punished her to protect his image or for control. It’s a betrayal, possibly driven by fear or pride.
The king calling Vasalie “his” is toxic and possessive. I don’t think he is merciful if he’s still holding her captive.
I would seek freedom, even though revenge is tempting but healing matters more.
Bridgette sees Vasalie’s truth but doesn’t judge her, this could show she is an be ally or a warning.
He didn’t replace her because no one could compare, she’s irreplaceable.
Vasalie’s father maybe comitted betrayal or treason. She might face him, but it’ll be painful but I am unsure of this.
The king playing her song us cruel and manipulative. It’s emotional control disguised as admiration.
Vasalie dancing again is a huge moment, it is painful but powerful. It seems as if she’s reclaiming herself.Vasalie will remain bold as her fire is returning, and she knows she still has power.
She’s unique, no one else inspires or threatens him like she does. BUT there could be more to this?
Bridgette’s story about her daughter is sad, as many women in this world sacrifice everything for survival.
She probably can’t be with her daughter because of forced separation due to politics, shame, or power.
Vasalie’s plan with Millen is smart and symbolic, it shows she is fighting back with what she knows best, dance.
The kings different behaviours is disturbing. He hides his emotions for power, but still wants control over her.
Yes Isle of Anell sounds beautiful and symbolic of hope and freedom.
Vasalie’s bold statement shows that she hasn’t lost her fire, even in the face of cruelty. She’s reclaiming her space.

The introduction is rather captivating already! I feel really bad for the fmc, its inhumane.It cannot be good to have little to no movement over such a long span of time especially for a dancer that’s been used to fluid movements and routines.
That’s the mystery! I think the King did something wrong and perhaps used her as a cover up. She was the easiest way out… rather audacious of him tho to refer to her as his when he betrayed her.
I think he still is somewhat fond of her but I don’t think he is merciful since he did throw her in jail to begin with.
I’d probably go for my freedom as well if like Vasalie I wasn’t in a condition to get revenge.
I think Brigitte knows the truth or has her doubts about it.
Maybe he felt minor guilt for what he had done to her so it didnt feel right to have someone take her place or he appreciated her art form too much for her title to be passed on.
He appears to have been abusive, maybe out of his rage he killed someone? His wife? I hope he does get dragged before a court.
I think it could have been him baiting Vasalie in a way so that she’d hear and attempt dancing with more determination and feeling? I’m proud of how she pushes herself I can imagine it cannot be easy at all… quite impressive!
I think its good she was bold still, the fire she has shouldn’t weaken it’ll help her in her mission.
He knows she’s an impressive dancer even with her health issues she’d still shine coz of her determination and strength and perhaps he trusts her in a way that he is not ready to reveal. He also has a huge leverage against her too.
It was a very inspiring and sad story.
Maybe Brigitte did something that prevents her from leaving & going to her daughter… debts to be paid?
I thought that was very creative & innovative. That cemented the fact that Vasalie is different and thinks outside of the box despite her circumstances! She’s smart.
As King there’s a way to be and carry yourself and I guess Illian wants that to be someone feared,respected and stern but parts of his true self will be hidden.
Maybe to explain everything that’s transpired? Or to capture her again?…

We get straight into it in chapter one which is a bit of a shock but at the same time makes me so curious to know as to whats going on. it seems like shes been in jail for quite some time.
Vasalie will most definitely struggle with her movements as her body hasnt had the freedom to stretch.
Someone with a lot of power obviosuly wants to control Vasalie and the only way to have power over her was to frame her for the death of an advisor.The king seemingly wants to control vasalie thus not proving her innocence.
I find it very weird that he calls vaselie his. its controlling and you get the sense that he says this as if he owns vaselie. so no i dont think he is very merciful.if i were in vaselies shoes, considering i have been framed for killing someone, thrown into jail for who knows how long and tortured with little to no freedom of movement and left alone with my own thoughts, i would most likely choose revenge. i would be so mad and want the person who did this to me to feel the pain i went through.
I thought that this was nice of brigette as she didnt outright stipulate that vaselie killed someone which means she knows that vaselie is innocent.
im assuming its because he still considers Vaselie to be his jewel despite her being in jail.
i have a sneaky feeling that her father killed Emilia and is someone who is extremely abusive. so yes perhaps vaselie should have taken her father to court however, i feel like her father has a lot of power and nobody would trust what vaselie had to say.Honestly the king is so weird for this and has some sort of weird attraction and hold on vaselie. he treats vaselie as if shes a toy that he can play with.
I feel for vaselie! this was so hard for her considering she spent a lot of time dancing. The result of her dance attempt tells us that she endured a lot physically while in jail. the lack of movement from being so tightly restrained has cost her with long term health issues
oh yes! vaselie will never be the same vaselie prior to being imprisoned so i like to think regardless of what the king throws her way vaselie will be bold in her actions going forward.he has built a relationship with vaselie where she trusts him for some reason and he her, thus picking someone else to do his dirty work won’t even be an option as he doesnt have that deep seeded messed up relationship that has with vaseli. i think the king has somewhat groomed vaselie into trusting him in some sick and twisted way and by her being framed for something she didnt do he knows he can hold that over her head and use her as a puppet to do whatever he wants her to do.
i feel so much for brigette but at the same time love that her daughter was able to do something great. just a shame that brigette cant be with her daughter which gets me to thinking that brigette may have done something to help her daughter get out with the cost being her working for Ilian.Using millen was such a great and smart idea!! a nice little surpise element to hide her struggles of dancing.
he clearly has a soft spot for her but only when they are alone. its a little odd though and has me wondering what his deal is.
at this point i wouldnt be surprised if he wants to blame her for whatever happens during the Gathering.the isle of anell does sound incredible and i look forward to seeing what happens and how the story will unfold.
