Chapter Five continues the conversation between the Master of Revels and Vasalie. What do you think of her performance? Do you believe that without the flour, she would have still amazed the Master of Revels?
We learn more about Vasalie’s father. When we are first introduced to him, we know he isn’t a good person, but in this chapter, we learn why he isn’t good. Were you surprised to find out he was appointed to be a general?
What do you think of Vasalie having to dance with a partner? Do you think the king will have anything to say about this?
There is a rumour following the youngest king. One where he allegedly made a deal with Fate of Morta. Do you think this is true?
When we are introduced to the Head of Staff, Laurent, we read about him talking to a cloaked figure. What do you think they could be discussing? An espionage plan of their own?
What do you think of the Head of Staff?
In Chapter Six, Vasalie reminds herself that she is not a damsel. She is a shadow, but do you think she is more than that? Or will she at least become more than a shadow?
We have learned more about the night the advisor died. Who do you think would have set her up?
We learn that Copelan is the other soloist. Do you now believe there would be an opportunity for Vasalie to partner with him? Or do you think that they will compete for the main soloist spotlight?
When we initially met Copelan, did you have an opinion of him? Did that change with this second introduction?
What do you think of the two characters, Copelan and Vasalie, as they test where their partnership begins and ends?
We are shortly introduced to the rulers of the other kingdoms. What are your first impressions of each of them?
What do you think King Anton said to the Queen of Razam to stop the war and to open trade?
Why do you think the queen still refuses to talk to Illian?
When we finally see both Illian and Anton in the same room, their differences are heightened. Why do you think they are so different? What sort of secrets do you think they are hiding within their opulence and lack of opulence?
Having seen King Anton, do you think he has escaped death, or do you think his otherworldly aura comes from something else?
Illian has given Vasalie a task. She is to garner the attention of his brother and get invited to a private dinner. Do you think Vasalie will be able to not only capture the king’s attention but also maintain the secrecy of her mission?
Do you think Vasalie’s decision to pull King Anton up during a dance for Brisendale will cause issues with their king?
What do you think Copelan was going to say? Before the king of Brisendale interrupted him? What is he trying to warn Vasalie of?
King Anton saves Vasalie from the ire of King Rurik. Afterwards, he scurries her away to somewhere more private. Do you think Vasalie should have garnered the king’s attention? Or should she have ignored Illian’s request?
When Vasalie returns to her rooms at last, she collapses. It isn’t long before Copelan arrives. What do you think of him accusing her of being drunk and then helping her?
Copelan calls Vasalie contagious. What do you think is the real reason he doesn’t want to let her go just yet? Is it because of her determination or something else?
Did you expect Vasalie’s father to be at the Gathering? Do you think he recognised her?

Copelan definitely found the flour intriguing. Though dancers make use of billows, flags and other pieces of fabric or tools, I don’t think it was common in their time to make use of powders (let alone flour) as a prop, otherwise he wouldn’t have been as impressed.
Not really, generals are meant to be ruthless men and her father is just that. They will do anything in their power to do what they have to do, even if it means sacrificing and hurting those you are supposed to love and care for.
I think this was bound to happen, knowing there was already a soloist chosen. I don’t think Illian cares, as long as his mission is completed and he gets out of her what he wants.
As on now we don’t really know a lot about Morta. We don’t even know if it real. But if he died that day then certainly something brought him back to life.
It’s definitely something suspicious. Like who even is the man in the cloak and why wasn’t he formally introduced to us?
I actually like Laurent. He isn’t showing any red flags right now.
I think as of now she’s still a shadow but I do believe that she will become more. I just know she’ll be noticed after her first performance.
I still think it’s someone in the palace that wants to create space between her and the king, but who is the million dollar question.
I think they will work together very well. The tension in that scene with them together had my by the neck. I lowkey now wish he was her love interest.
Yes, I thought he was stuck-up. But now I think he’s just passionate about dancing.
I absolutely loved that scene of them. I don’t know if this will grow into something more but they definitely have undeniable chemistry!
The others didn’t really make an impression on me but King Rurick seems like a scary man. Anton on the other hand just feels like a free spirit always up for some fun.
Anton probably struck a good deal with her in trading what his kingdom as to offer for cheaper but also somehow involving his brother since she doesn’t speak to Illian.
I think part of Anton’s deal was to cut ties with Illian for whatever reason.
I think that Anton is trying to prove a point in being flashy with his wealth. Flashing his wealth also contributes the playboy persona he has. As where Illian is more of a private man that keeps everyone at arm’s length and there wouldn’t broadcast his wealth. The way he keeps to himself we might not know if he is richer than Anton and just not showing it.
I’m still not sure about the escaping death thing, but I do think his aura comes from his wealth and being a natural charmer.
I think so yes. It helps a lot that she mostly keeps to herself and only show and tell what’s needed to get close to the people she needs to fulfil this mission.
I think Anton is much more dangerous than he leads on and that’s what Copelan was trying to tell her. Maybe Anton likes punishing people that crosses him. Might make sense as to why the Queen also didn’t refuse whatever deal he made, because he threatened her.
Vasalie will probably do anything for her freedom but I’m also worried that she might get into trouble and Illian will not be able to help her out. Or simply just choose to not help her.
Copelan definitely cares about her more than he shows. He might also know she isn’t drunk but also not wanting to ask her what’s actually wrong with her. Instead he accused her of being drunk and helps her nonetheless.
I think he knows Vasalie is valuable for the production. She brings something fresh and new the kingdoms haven’t seen. But I also feel he just cares about her a lot and she’s grown on him.
I didn’t expect him as he is a mere general and I don’t think he recognised her, because the type of person he is I think he would’ve said something or caused a scene.

I don’t think Vasalie would have been able to impress the Master of Revels without the flour, he notes that she is injured and her movements are stunted but her performance is fresh and unique and that’s what will captivate the audience.
Honestly I was not surprised that her father is General, it makes me wonder what he is capable of!
I do not think King Illian will be happy about her having a dance partner seeing as how possessive he has been in the past. But I am not opposed to it! I quite like Copelan.
I don’t think King Anton made a deal with Fate of Mortal but he is definitely a very interesting character and I do believe that not everything is as it seems. Especially the public’s perception of him.
I have a feeling that Laurent and whoever the cloaked figure is at this point (which we find out shortly after) definitely have something up their sleeves but I am not sure it is necessarily a bad thing.
I am absolutely in love with Laurent!! What a wonderful character. I really hope he stays this way and this doesn’t end up being an act.
I definitely think that Vasalie is going to pave a path for herself, we already see that she is talented and has the drive. And after all she has been through, she has to come out on top.
The circumstances surrounding the death of the advisor are very strange. For someone to have murdered him and moved him to Vasalie’s bed while she was sleeping seems calculated and I am still convinced King Illian is behind it.
I think that I am in love with Copelan lol. But yes, I think that they will work well together, they definitely seem to have some sort of chemistry.
I didn’t really have an opinion of him when we first met him, other than the fact that it was obvious he was taking a chance by allowing Vasalie a spot as a performer and I liked that, but now I really really love him 😂 that dance between them? Omg.I think that I really hate King Illian lol, King Rurik seems to be the one you do not want to piss off but I actually really like King Anton from the moment we get introduced.
I don’t know what King Anton said to stop a war between Miridran and Razam but I do know that he seems to be a character who can charm his way out of almost anything.
There is very obviously bad blood between King Illian and the Queen of Razam, I suspect we will find out more soon.
There is definitely secrets surrounding the three King brothers, Estiennes absence or late arrival stands out and the differences between King Illian and Anton are so dominant you’d think they weren’t even related. There is definitely something different about Anton though I cannot put my finger on it just yet.
I think Vasalie can do anything she puts her mind to, especially when her freedom depends on it.
Vasalie definitely didn’t consider the repercussions of pulling King Anton into a dance that was for Brisendale, it was impulsive but she definitely caught his attention.
I don’t know what Copelan was going to say but there is definitely something going on behind the scenes that we know nothing about yet.
I don’t think Vasalie really has a choice in the matter, she has to do what King Illian says and it seems to be going well so far.
Copelan obviously cares for her, even if he is under the impression that she was drunk, he didn’t need to help her and yet, he did. That shows his character.
I think it’s all of the above that he said to her, and maybe he even likes having her around. Likes dancing with her, being in her company. I think a soloists life must be lonely and I think he enjoys not being alone.
Yes I knew the General would show up, it was obvious. But not knowing what truly happened in her pasts and seeing her terrified reaction to him makes me wonder what’s next.

1) Her performance was bold and imaginative and the flour was a clever theatrical element, but her ability to captivate comes from her emotion and presence. Even without the flour, her spirit would have shone through. The flour just gave her message physical form.
2) Yes and it’s disturbing that someone so manipulative and cruel could be rewarded with power. It highlights the brokenness of the kingdom’s political system and suggests his influence reaches further than expected.
3) It’s a turning point and it shows she’s being reintegrated into court life, but under close watch. The king, being possessive, may react with jealousy or false politeness. It’s likely he’ll assert control in subtle or direct ways.
4) Given the mysterious tone of the story, it’s very possible. The supernatural elements feel believable in this world, and the king’s unusual aura hints that something beyond natural forces might be at play.
5) Definitely something covert and possibly a rebellion, spy network, or counterplot involving Vasalie, Illian, or even Anton. The cloak and secrecy scream espionage.
6) Laurent is clearly more than a servant. He seems calculating and deeply involved in court politics. He may serve someone else entirely or he might serve himself.
7) Yes abd Vasalie is already moving beyond survival mode. Her growing boldness, intelligence, and influence show she’s shifting into the role of a key player and perhaps even a disruptor of the entire system.
8) t may have been someone in the king’s inner circle and possibly her father or someone working with him, given his ambition or it could be someone trying to control the king by removing those close to him.
9) At first, it may be a competition due to tension and mistrust, but there’s potential for a strong alliance. Their chemistry and complementary skills could make them a powerful pair and if they learn to trust.
10) Initially, he seemed cold or aloof, but his second appearance reveals complexity. He’s wary of court politics, but not immune to Vasalie’s spark. There’s intrigue and possibly protectiveness under the surface.
11) It’s compelling to watch and it mirrors a dance of power, trust, and vulnerability. There’s tension, but also mutual understanding building slowly. It’s one of the more emotionally layered dynamics in the story.
12) Each ruler brings a different energy and Anton is mysterious and ethereal, Rurik is aggressive and arrogant, and the Queen of Razam is strategic and icy. Their presence raises the stakes for everyone at the Gathering.
13) Likely something deeply personal or tied to shared history and possibly a secret leverage or a magical pact. It had to be powerful enough to override bitterness.
14) It could be political betrayal, a personal slight, or mistrust of his motives. Her silence is clearly calculated, not emotional.
15) They represent two ends of a spectrum—pragmatism vs. mysticism. Anton may be involved with ancient forces, while Illian is playing the long political game.
16) His aura feels touched by something beyond life and possibly the deal with Fate of Morta. He doesn’t feel quite human anymore, which is both alluring and unsettling.
17) Yes, she already has his attention, but keeping the mission secret will be harder. Anton is sharp, and if he has supernatural awareness, deception might not be easy.
18) Definitely. Illian may see it as disobedience or distraction but also potentially useful if it furthers his goals. Either way, it creates tension between loyalty and strategy.
19) He was likely going to warn Vasalie about Anton, or about the political danger of playing too bold too fast. His concern seems genuine, if reluctant.
20) It was risky, but calculated. She’s navigating a dangerous court, and refusing Illian could be just as risky. But now, she’s caught the eye of someone unpredictable, which could lead to unforeseen consequences.
21) It’s a defensive reaction and he cares but masks it with sarcasm or irritation. Helping her afterward shows his actions speak louder than his words. There’s a protective instinct there.
22) It’s not just determination and she challenges him, inspires something deeper, maybe even hope or connection. She’s unpredictable and alive in a place that’s full of masks. He’s afraid of what she stirs in him.
23) It’s shocking, but fitting and his presence tightens the web around Vasalie. He likely suspects or knows, but is playing the long game. If he does recognize her, he may be planning his move silently.

I think Vasalie is captivating when she dances that even if she didn’t have the flour she would have still kept the Master of Revel’s attention. She is extremely resilient which comes across in her dancing.
Honestly not surprised, generals are sometimes stereotyped as being harsh and cruel in order for people to get in line and respect them. I think his mannerism and how he brought up his daughter is absolutely disgusting.
I’m interested to see her let her guard down and dance with someone else and actually learn to trust another human being. I think it will help her not only in her dance career but also her personal life.
I mean anything is possible in fiction, only time will tell if he did in fact cheat death.Definitely excited to see how this espionage will play out because why else would he hide himself??
I love Vasalie’s character, we can see how she is slowly coming back to life after her imprisonment and finding strength in herself. She is extremely intelligent and knows how to act and what to say.
I still believe Illian set her up, I just don’t trust him.I’m enjoying Copelan’s and Vasalie’s interactions with each other. I believe they will only push each other to get stronger and I believe he will end up helping her whilst she is secretly on this mission.
I don’t quite have an answer to why they are so different but possibly because Anton cheated death, and by doing so somehow cheated the scale?
Vasalie needs to be a little more cautious in the way she interacts and actually needs to try take more of a backseat role because she’s gained the attention of many royals. I think she will let Copelan in on her mission but hopefully maintain the secrecy from everyone else. I think he was trying to warn Vasalie about how dangerous and conniving Anton can be.
She can’t ignore his request. In order for her to have a chance at freedom, she needs to do as Illian says, at least for right now.
I found it strange he accused her of being drunk without trying to engage with her properly but it was very gentlemanly of him to give her water to try and ‘sober’ her up.I think Copelan may be a little love struck by Vasalie as a result of her resilience and doesn’t want to see her go but rather grow to be an amazing dancer.
I didn’t expect her father to be there, that was quite a shock. But surely he would have recognised his own daughter? It doesn’t make sense why he didn’t react immediately.

Yes, I believe he would have seen something in her that’s worth giving a try.
It didn’t surprise me that he was appointed general.
He’ll probably be jealous or should I say possessive about the fact that she’s dancing with another man.
Could be. That would definitely make the plot more interesting.
It’s possible. He seems like a nice person so far.
I see her becoming more than just a shadow. Once she realizes that not being who she once was doesn’t stop her from becoming someone even better.
I think the mystery person is someone very important, someone with high leadership or influence, who knows how to sabotage others without being caught.
I have a feeling they’ll partner up.
I definitely started to like him more after the second introduction. The first time, he didn’t seem very nice but now we’re starting to see more of his true personality.
Maybe he knows something that could ruin her reputation.
Illian is definitely up to something and she probably knows it, which is why she doesn’t trust him.
He could have also made a deal to hold onto his power.
Yes, I do think she’ll be able to pull it off.
But she needs to be more careful now, especially after making such a bold move. He’s clearly trying to protect her, especially since what she did isn’t considered normal or acceptable. It might even look suspicious.
She needs to do what he says so she can be free.
I didn’t like that he went straight to accusing her instead of just asking what was wrong.
He definitely sees them becoming incredible dance partners and it seems that he may like her as well.
I did not expect that at all and I do think he saw her.

Absolutely loved her performance! It truly is unfortunate that Vasalie isn’t dancing as she would have 2 years ago, like she wishes she could, but she is still doing so well. The powder most definitely made the performance here – her creativity in both dance and prop is so fun to read about.
I’m not really surprised at all. People get appointed to positions of power through either being really good or really bad and here it is the latter. It’s heartbreaking to read about everything he did to Vasalie.
It should be a fun experience for Vasalie, I think. The king has always had her on a very tight leash in terms of control – we see that extended even to her social life – so her now exploring these different forms of dance is exciting! That said, I don’t think the king will be happy about it…It might! I’m uncertain to what extent “fantasy” elements are involved in this book, or whether it’s pure mythology, but this would definitely be an interesting plot point.
In a later chapter we find out that the cloaked figure is King Anton. I don’t suspect any nefarious business, I think it’s just him escaping the responsibilities of being a king for a while.
He’s an interesting character! I immediately trusted him and I hope he stays trustworthy throughout the story! Their friendship is starting off quite well.
She is most definitely more than just a shadow. Already we see her making decisions that have political consequences – her impact and role in this story is one to be remembered.
The king is very very high on my list of suspects…
I hope it doesn’t become a competition between them. They started off on a very positive note (which took a slight dip towards the end there…), but I’m hoping their relationship prevails.
He is most definitely being set up as a romantic interest. I’m still quite neutral on him as a character, so I’m excited to see what the author’s plans are with him.
Based on the blurb, King Anton seems to be set up as the romantic interest, but now I’m not so sure… It is nice, however, to see Vasalie getting some positive attention after years of suffering.
The world building in this book is amazing! Each kingdom is so distinct and interesting – their introductions solidified this. I can’t wait to read more about them!
I’m not one for politics and negotiations but I highly suspect some bad talking of King Illian was involved…
See above 😆
I’m still unsure whether the differences are physical – in the sense of eg. different features – or whether it’s purely in eg. the way they carry themselves. Nevertheless, I suspect their differences have a lot to do with their inner “layers of deception”.I truly think it’s simply him being comfortable in who he is and with everything he does. I don’t think there is an additional layer of “otherworldliness”.
She most definitely did 😳. King Anton seems determined to figure out her secrets – I’m half hoping he does find out and rescues her from King Illian.
The King of Brisendale seemed to be satisfied with King Anton’s explanation. Time will only tell if he took it to heart or not…
There is some court politics at play that Vasalie isn’t aware of and that Copelan is very aware of. Her inexperience in this regard will get her in a lot of trouble. I believe Copelan was trying to avoid this outcome.
King Illian, despite being the person who controls her, is the only one who determines whether she is free or not. Going against his wishes will only result in Vasalie being back in the cell. She has no choice but to follow his instructions.
Accusing her of being drunk was something I didn’t expect… He knows that she is injured/unwell and is well aware of her lack of stamina. I don’t understand his reasoning for accusing her of being drunk – just as I don’t understand her reasoning for not refuting his accusations.
I fear there is a small amount of jealousy involved… Copelan says it outright that he doesn’t have that “something more” and that Vasalie’s level of creativity is why he’s letting her stay. But maybe even romantic attraction is another contributor?
I did not!! That was an interesting twist that I’m excited to see unfold. I hope he didn’t recognise her, but only time will tell…

I think she was able to impress him because of her creativity, but her dancing (focused on emotive storytelling) would’ve impressed him on her own. The flour at the end was just a nice touch to her dancing, but it only enhanced the story. Her dancing carried most of her performance. Either way, she turned a well known dance that was considered too simple into something beautiful.
I know Vasalie implied he’s a powerful man with a high social standing, but I wasn’t expecting him to be a general.
I think that dancing with a partner will be good for her. She thought the damage to her nerves would limit her from achieving her full potential as a dancer so having her professional horizons broaden to a type of dancing she hadn’t done before, and learning to trust and rely on another dancer, allows her to have the comraderie with fellow dancers she used to have back in Illian’s domain.
Speaking of Illian, I’m surprised he hasn’t done or said anything about Vasalie dancing with a partner who has to touch her so intimately in their performances yet. But I guess the reason why he needs her there supersedes his possessive need to control who has access to touching her.I definitely think it’s true. It’s a fantasy novel so anything is possible, and rumours always have a kernel of truth in these types of backstories.
I think they’re discussing a way to infiltrate Illian’s palace/ kingdom (for reasons unknown), and my theory if that their informant on the inside is Brigitte (based on the fact that she said she can’t leave, and because I hope she returns to the plot🤭).
I think he’s super friendly, the type of person who makes people really comfortable and at ease around him.
She both is and isn’t a shadow right now. She’s Illian’s shadow as his spy, blending in to gather information. She’s a shadow for herself, hiding her true intentions of going along with everything Illian wants for herself and not because he controls her. But she’s also not a just a shadow because she stands through all of her memorable interactions with the important characters we’ve been introduced to so far.
Definitely Illian. That tyrant definitely set her up.
Copelan’s whole thing is about trust, so I don’t think they’d compete for the attention of the Crowns as the main soloist. I think they’ll have a great partnership once Vasalie learns to trust him a little more.
I initially thought he was just one of the people Vasalie would meet once or twice because he’d oversee all the performers for the Gathering. I had the impression that he was this jaded master of revels who had to babysit all the dancers, but this second interaction convinced me he must be the other half of the love triangle and catapulted him to my second favourite character (Vasalie being the first). He has such a way with words (in a good way) and his actions reinforce the sincerity behind them. It’s honorable and a little refreshing in an environment where you have to be mistrustful of every characters’ intentions.
I was honestly enthralled by that scene. I wasn’t expecting such an intimate scene between the two of them, where they spoke without words and explored the dynamic between trust and abandon (letting go of those fears and of yourself).
I love how the difference in the different regions of the kingdom were described through the rulers and their attire. I think the Queen is the coolest, flanked by her seven sons who seem to care about her a lot. Anton seems really charming, but there’s an intelligent mind he’s masking with that charm and joviality (how he managed to diffuse the situation between Vasalie and King Rurik still amazes me. Rurik at least lives up to the rumours: he seemed super intense compared to the other rulers. And Illian keeps solidifying the image I have of him in my head: he’s an entitled, spoiled King who thrives on the control, pain and misery of others.
So my theory/ conspiracy is that Anton probably proposed an alliance between his part of the kingdom and hers in exchange for information to take down Illian’s tyrany (information he’s trying to gather through his own spies).
Because that entitled idiot probably offended her or took a couple of her people hostage back when they were on the cusp of war and tortured them.
Their individual secrets are just how cunning the political minds that they both posess are. hide (one behind his charm, the other behind his projection of wealth). If there are any other differences besides one being King and smart, and the other cruel and smart and not as wealthy as his younger brother, then I don’t know what they are yet.
She already did both of those successfully.
I think it would have if Anton hadn’t stepped in to diffuse the situation.
He’s the most likely to… Make a big deal out of it? Interpret it as Vasalie wanting to be one of his private dancers? Monopolise her for the rest of the Gathering? Figure out your alterior motives and exploit your secrets? (I have no clue what he was going to say, but it has me intrigued).
She knows the consequences of not following Illian’s orders right now, so I think it wouldn’t have made sense for her to ignore them (especially when he’s right there observing her actions).
I thought it was really honorable of him to help her even though he’s trusted with her. But I also didnt like that he jumped to thinking she was drunk instead of tired or upset.
I think that was his initial reason for accepting her as the other soloist, but that is now only partially true. This man is smitten and it’s so obvious.
I didn’t expect him to be there at all, but I’m also hoping it’s been so long since she ran away from home that he didn’t recognise her by looking at her face.

Tanith (@tanith_justanotherchapter)
Yes and no. He was already dead set that they already had a soloist. I think that having the flour in her performance captivated him enough to keep watching and see her potential. She didn’t just dance, she gave a magical performance but that was with the help of the flour. He could see she had potential not only in dance but in how she did it.
Yes, I suspected that he was an important person or high social standing, but it didn’t cross my mind that we was appointed general.
I don’t think that the king would like her having a partner. He considers Vasalie his and only his. He would be territorial and jealous but also distrustful.
No, I don’t think the rumor of him making a deal with Fate or Morta is true but I believe there’s so much to his story we’re going to find out. Even Vasalie didn’t think it was true.
Oooh I would love it to be an espionage plan of their own and it would make complete sense if it was. Why else would he be cloaked – definitely conspiring about something.
I like the head of staff so far, we’re just learning about all of the characters so it’s still too early to tell and form a complete opinion.
That was one of my favourite quotes from the book so far. She isn’t a damsel and she’s proved that. She may have been locked away and physically weak as a result, but she is sharp and she is smart. She is a shadow because she chooses to be one. For now. She will become so much more than a shadow.
Is it too far fetched to suspect her father setting her up? I don’t truly know who to suspect right now. It might be the king himself because she mentions she was with him before hand and then she was drugged.
There’s no doubt in my mind that Copeland and Vasalie will partner together. I don’t think they’d compete against each other.
My opinion of him changed when we first saw him dance and we figured out he was the soloist. Especially because we know he’ll be a bigger part of the story now.
The dynamic between Copeland and Vasalie is going to be an interesting one. I wonder just how much she’s going to open up to him about – her health issues, her father etc as that will have a direct impact. Him thinking she was drunk after the performance is a prime example.
I’m very eager to get to know the rulers of the other kingdoms! We only. Got a taste.
I’m not sure what King Anton would have said but he seems very charismatic and smart; he seems to know what people want / diffuse a situation.
Because Illian is absolutely horrible but that’s my biased opinion.
Illian and Anton differences.. That’s a question I need to think about more. I can’t say for certain now but we already know Illian’s overall feelings about the other rulers.
A mixture of both? His escape of death could have provided the otherworldly aura or his perception of the world as a result of his survival. Moments change people.
Yes, I think Vasalie is smart and strategic enough to do so. But she does need to realize she’s only manipulated Illian so far. She needs to learn how to approach his siblings and how they are different to him. She’s working on the basis all men are the same which would bite her later on.
No, I don’t think it will cause issues – she did what she had to do. He knew it wouldn’t be easy for her.
I think Copeland figured that Vasalie wasn’t actually drunk and he wanted to question her about it.
No, there was no way for her to ignore Illian’s request. She took a calculated risk (which we see she’s used to) and it paid off.
He has a soft spot for her. I’m not sure yet whether it is platonic or not but I think he sees something in her. He could have just left her, but he chose to help. Maybe he is just kind but I don’t think it’s just that.
Oh I loved when he called her contagious. He is so captivated by her – rightfully so. He knows she’s more than a dancer – she is a performancer – and that’s what he needs. Her determination is a contributor too but I also think Copeland feels something for her whether platonic or not (as stated aboveł.
I didn’t expect him to be there! But I also don’t think he recognized her. Even if he was suspicious it was her, I think he would have investigated or checked if it was her.

1. I think the creativity makes her stand out from other dances. When something is unique, it intrigues people even more.
2. No. I figured that he was in a position of power, given she decided to flee. I suspect she felt as though no one would take her side given how well respected he possibly is.
3. Given how Illian views Vasalie, I am absolutely positive he will be livid. Someone touching his “posession” in such an intimate way is bound to set him off. I love that she will be paired with someone skilled, to further learn and refine her talent.
4. At this stage, anything is possible. Morta is mentioned so much in this book that there must be some element of the truth behind the stories.
5. Hmm I don’t think I really thought about what they were discussing but rather who Laurent was speaking to! So I’m honestly not sure!
6. He seems exactly as described but for some reason that makes me suspicious! Its always the ones you never suspect 😅
7. I think Vasalie’s confidence has been grinded to dust by both her Father and Illian. I think that as her confidence grows, her opinion of herself will evolve as well.
8. At this stage, I dont think I have enough information about all the players to understand what game is afoot. I am eager to learn more and develop some theories as more information is shared!
9. I cannot wait to see their performances together. I’m positive there might be some teething issues between them at the beginning but I am sure they will become great together.
10. At first, he seemed guarded and a little rude to be honest. He turned her away without seeing the person really.
11. There is definitely some chemistry there so I’m eager to see how that develops as the plot progresses.
12. They seem to live up to their reputations but I think there is much more to each of them than what meets the eye.
13. He likely made some kind of bargain that she couldn’t resists, maybe in terms of goods to trade. He seems very charismatic…so its also possible he charmed his way into doing it.
14. Its not clear given what we know so far so I’m keen to learn more about the story behind those feelings soon as well.
15. Parentage was one of the first things that came to mind because of how differently they were described. Etienne’s absence is also strange and I’m keen to find out why. Lots of secrets to unpack it seems!
16. I think he is very charismatic and charming but hiding something else so it’s possible that people just assume his nature is otherworldly.
17. Given that she’s never done this before, I think she’ll likely make mistakes. But seeing as she’s changed her life so much to escape her father, the secret might actually stay a secret.
18. Absolutely. Given then it was meant to honor Brisendale, it will likely cause whispers.
19. That everything is likely not as it seems. I think he’s had many more interactions with the crown and therefore knows more about them.
20. She needed to do it until she comes up with a plan to escape Illian’s clutches. So I dont think she had a choice really.
21. So many assumptions made about her. I was upset and angry that he just jumped the gun immediately without asking her what happened. I disliked the man a tiny bit in that moment!
22. I think her creativity calls to him and he sees the way she enraptures audience’s with her storytelling. A part of me wonders if he also has his own agenda though.
23. I didn’t! But I think he might not have been there during the dance…or maybe she ran away when she was quite younger and didn’t recognize her

Her performance with the flour is powerful and symbolic. Even without the flour, her intensity and message would’ve still stood out.
I was surprised he was a general, it is actually disturbing someone so cruel rose to that level. It adds depth to Vasalie’s backstory.
Dancing with a partner could be challenging for her. The king may also not like it as it could threaten his control.
The deal could possibly be true as the youngest king feels otherworldly. It could explain his unnatural aura.
The cloaked figure with Laurent is definitely suspicious, it could be espionage, or political scheming.
Laurent comes across as cunning and possibly dangerous. He’s more involved than he lets on.
Yes, she’s already more. She’s evolving into a force, not just a shadow.
Someone close such as her father possibly set her up or someone inside the court who feared her power.
Partnering with Copelan could work but tension’s brewing and competition feels inevitable.
My first impression of Copelan was that he is cold but later he showed more layers, he’s intrigued, maybe conflicted.
Vasalie and Copelan as partners feels like a tense but electric dynamic and there is potential for greatness or collapse.
First impressions of the the rulers of other kingdoms is that Anton stands out as most enigmatic and that each ruler has
clear motives and energy.Anton said something strategic likely exposed a shared threat or offered something irresistible.
The queen won’t talk to Illian because she doesn’t trust him, possibly due to past betrayal or a power imbalance.
Illian and Anton are different because they have different paths. Illian’s rigid, Anton’s unpredictable but secrets likely fuel both of them.
Anton’s aura gives off vibes of him not quite being human, he is possibly touched by magic or fate.
Vasalie will succeed but it’ll be risky. She’s clever but secrecy will be hard to maintain.
Pulling Anton up will likely cause issues as it challenges the hierarchy and may provoke Illian’s jealousy.
Copelan was probably trying to give a warning about Anton or the mission’s danger.
It’s complicated, playing the game is risky but necessary if she wants her freedom.
Copelan helping her after accusing her shows mixed emotions, he’s suspicious but still drawn to her.
He is intrigued by her fire and mystery. It’s not just about her mission.
Her father at the Gathering was surprising and unsettling. He might’ve recognised her or sensed something familiar.

Q: What do you think of her performance? Do you believe that without the flour, she would have still amazed the Master of Revels?
A: Yes but not to this extent. We find out later in this section why he took a liking to her and without spoilers, the flour had a minor role in it. Q: We learn more about Vasalie’s father. When we are first introduced to him, we know he isn’t a good person, but in this chapter, we learn why he isn’t good. Were you surprised to find out he was appointed to be a general?
A: Disappointed but not surprised. Sometimes really bad people have leadership roles and some just are able to hide the rotten parts better for the public, and let it loose in private – which seems to have been the case for her home life judging by the bird scenario. Q: What do you think of Vasalie having to dance with a partner? Do you think the king will have anything to say about this?
A: I think it might throw a wrench in his plans, yes. Q: There is a rumour following the youngest king. One where he allegedly made a deal with Fate of Morta. Do you think this is true?
A: It depends on whether the Fates are real so we will just have to see! Q: When we are introduced to the Head of Staff, Laurent, we read about him talking to a cloaked figure. What do you think they could be discussing? An espionage plan of their own?
A: I honestly thought they were just discussing party plans 😭 I’m just vibing, not really thinking. But this is having me do a double take now. Q: What do you think of the Head of Staff?
A: I think he’s a sweetheart and hope he has a happy ending! Q: In Chapter Six, Vasalie reminds herself that she is not a damsel. She is a shadow, but do you think she is more than that? Or will she at least become more than a shadow?
A: I think being a shadow is pretty cool but I’m excited to read about her journey. Q: We have learned more about the night the advisor died. Who do you think would have set her up?
A: The King for sure. Q: We learn that Copelan is the other soloist. Do you now believe there would be an opportunity for Vasalie to partner with him? Or do you think that they will compete for the main soloist spotlight?
A: They’ll be partners, I’m sure. Hopefully off the dance floor too! Q: When we initially met Copelan, did you have an opinion of him? Did that change with this second introduction?
A: No, I did not. But I’m glad we’re getting to know him better now! Q: What do you think of the two characters, Copelan and Vasalie, as they test where their partnership begins and ends?
A: I think they have a lot of tension and this is going to be a very fun read! Q: We are shortly introduced to the rulers of the other kingdoms. What are your first impressions of each of them?
A: I loved the Queen and her seven sons! The others I’m sure we’ll get to know better but she’s the only one who stood out besides King Anton. Q: What do you think King Anton said to the Queen of Razam to stop the war and to open trade?
A: Maybe something along the lines of forming an alliance against their common enemy. Q: Why do you think the queen still refuses to talk to Illian?
A: I don’t know 😭 hope I didn’t miss something! Q: When we finally see both Illian and Anton in the same room, their differences are heightened. Why do you think they are so different? What sort of secrets do you think they are hiding within their opulence and lack of opulence?
A: I did not even think they were hiding anything but I’m thinking maybe the need to prove themselves to their father and people would top all other things. Q: Having seen King Anton, do you think he has escaped death, or do you think his otherworldly aura comes from something else?
A: He just seems like a charming and self-assured guy but we will just have to see! Q: Illian has given Vasalie a task. She is to garner the attention of his brother and get invited to a private dinner. Do you think Vasalie will be able to not only capture the king’s attention but also maintain the secrecy of her mission?
A: Yes she will be able to. I’m just not sure if she’ll be able to hide it from Copelan forever. Q: Do you think Vasalie’s decision to pull King Anton up during a dance for Brisendale will cause issues with their king?
A: Yes and it did. It seems like things are very tense between the rulers. Q: What do you think Copelan was going to say? Before the king of Brisendale interrupted him? What is he trying to warn Vasalie of?
A: Maybe he was trying to warn her about trusting higher ups or drinks getting spiked. Q: King Anton saves Vasalie from the ire of King Rurik. Afterwards, he scurries her away to somewhere more private. Do you think Vasalie should have garnered the king’s attention? Or should she have ignored Illian’s request?
A: She had no choice but to go through with his requests otherwise she would have been imprisoned again. Q: When Vasalie returns to her rooms at last, she collapses. It isn’t long before Copelan arrives. What do you think of him accusing her of being drunk and then helping her?
A: I got annoyed with both of them at this stage – why assume she is drunk but also why does she not correct him? At least he’s helping her and keeping her hydrated 💫 Q: Copelan calls Vasalie contagious. What do you think is the real reason he doesn’t want to let her go just yet? Is it because of her determination or something else?
A: I think he likes her. Q: Did you expect Vasalie’s father to be at the Gathering? Do you think he recognised her?
A: No and I hope not! -
Rozanne (@rozanne_visagie)
I feel that without the flour Vasalie would have been able to impress him, but perhaps not amaze, since the flour was truly unique and added something magical to her performance.
Vasalie’s father is a cruel person, and I think him being appointed as a general is probably because of that. I am just glad that she managed to get away from him.
I think Vasalie dancing with a partner will be something new to her and perhaps help her to lean on another’s strength while still dancing. I think the king will have something to say about it.
I feel he was about to warn her and give her important information, perhaps something that Vasalie could use.
I am quite curious about this deal and whether it is true.
A cloaked figure is always a sign of mystery and secrets, so there is definitely something going on that needs to be kept under wraps.
I am wary of everyone at this point, probably because of the paranoia of Vasalie being a spy, but so far, I like the Head of Staff.
I like Vasalie’s character and feel that she is more than a shadow. She is growing, taking chances and I only expect her to become stronger.
I think Illian set her up, without a doubt.
Finding out Copelan is the other soloist was such a surprise, but I feel that they would make great partners.
I liked Copelan from the start and totally ship him and Vasalie. They would make a great couple. But apart from that, I love that he is also passionate about dancing. They work well together. I love how she described that they speak through gestures, not words.
Their dance together was something amazing!I am still not sure about the other rulers of the kingdoms, but I am eager to learn more about them and see where the story goes.
I’m not sure what King Anton said, but it was not in line with what the queen wanted.
I guess there are a lot of differences between the Queen and her sons, and they’re not giving in to her requests. I’m not sure, but we’ll see what happens.Perhaps the rumours are true and that King Anton did make a deal with the Fate of Morta. They are like total opposites.
I’m thinking more and more that he escaped death, but perhaps we’ll be surprised with something else.Vasalie has no other choice and will need to capture the king’s attention if she wants her freedom.
With the royals, there’s always some kind of drama, and it would be no surprise if it causes issues with their king, especially since it’s mentioned that it’s an offence and Copelan warned her against involving the audience.
I think this is dangerous territory, and Vasalie must be careful with her next actions. Ignoring Illain’s request might be more dangerous, but who knows what King Anton might have in mind.
I feel it’s rude that he made assumptions without thinking them through. It’s not something she needs right now. But he did come and check on her and help her, so perhaps that counts for something.
I think Copelan is already liking Vasalie, but just doesn’t want to admit it.
I was utterly shocked and didn’t expect her father to be there.

Vaselie is brilliant at what she does and using the millen is such a smart way of using an additional prop to help enhance her performance despite her ailements. Without the millen vaselie would have still amazed the Master of Revels as shes resilent and such a fighter and dancing is her way of letting out all her emotions.
Im not surprised at all! and in all honesty he probably is a terrible person because he knows that he can get away with it.
Vaselie dancing with a partner may be a good thing for her and i dont really see this being an issue with the king as long as she does what he requires of her.
At this stage anything can be true as we arent let in on a lot. we have bits and pieces and i dont really know who to trust or what to believe at the moment.
Espionage? No, but i do think Laurent and the cloaked figure are discussing something big and important. I have a sneaky feeling that Laurent knows exactly who Vaselie is and who she was sent by. Laurent is head of staff which means he knows whats going on around him, all the gossip etc. He has been really nice to Vaselie so far and am curious to know why Ilian wants vaselie to get close to Laurent.
Vaselie is going to become the centre of attention so her feeling of being a shadow will disappear. Ilian wanted her at the Gathering for a reason so i dont see how she will be able to keep a low profile for very long. Plus she was in prison for the death of the advisor which is a topic that may be brouhgt up later on. I dont see Ilian being the one who framed her for the death however he must be in on it and he knows who did it.
They will perform together as he has taken a liking toward her but im a little weary of him. Something seems off about him to me. Vaselie is also attracted to him and they seem to have a deeper connection, not like the one she supposedly had with Ilian.
Theyre all quite magnificent and powerful people but the one who stood out the most is King Rurik as he seems like a man with a lot of power .
At this stage I have no idea what Anton did to get Queen Razam to end the war but i have a feeling its not something very obvious. Theres some bad blood between her and illian and id love to know what happened which resulted in them not talking to one another.
Anton apparently nearly died so i think this apparent near death experience made him realise things thus the result of the total differences between him and illian.
Vaslie is put in a tough position but i do imagine that she can pull the task off. however, she will end up putting herself in the spotlight, not necessarily outing her mission but just putting herself more out there instead of keeping a low profile. Her task of capturing Antons attention will ruffle feathers, especially that of King Rurik.
Copelan was probbaly trying to tell Vaselie that these kings are dangerous and to keep a low profile.
Vaselie had to follow through on Illians request of garnering Antons attention however, the way Anton swooped in to save vaselie from Rurik has me thinking that he knows vaselie is up to something.
Copelan seems to care for Vaselie and has a soft spot for her. despite him being mad her, he still tries to take care of her but this feels like an ulterior motive from him. He seems too nice.
I did not expect vaselies father to be at the Gathering. What a shock! He may have no recognised vaselie as he hasnt seen her in years.

I believe the millen flour was required and helped enhance her performance. It gave her that edge she much required.
No, I wasn’t he had a personality that was stoic and hard much like a general. He’s just much more ruthless though.
This will make it harder for her mission but will also aid her in her performances and help her manage them with her illness.
I think it has some truth to it.
No idea, some sort of plans & politics perhaps
He seems nice enough and welcoming
Definitely, she can blend into the shadows but she was made for the limelight and she shines there.
Someone from Illian’s inner circle? Him?
Copelan and her would compete together coz surely he’d have been okay with their pairing since he did take her on
I thought he was a little grumpy at first but not in a bad way. Its nice to see more to him
Their relationship appears to be filled with chemistry and tension and I’m quite excited to see the depths it reaches and how close they do get.
The world-building is surely well thought out and fun to see. Each place has its own attributes and characteristics that’s depicted to us.
Anton appears to be a smooth & smart talker, quite suave too. Surely must have been something very important to have the Queen rethink things.
Perhaps its something Anton said or more likely she doesn’t want to associate with Illian and his views?
Perhaps they dont share the same set of parents? Or maybe one of them is adopted or as with siblings each one is still different.
I think he has escaped it.
For now yes, the story surely depends on her and her gaining that freedom.
Maybe slightly so but she’s the fmc she’ll be protected.
Copelan seems protective of her even though he doesn’t want to be, he has connected with her. Perhaps to just caution her of the Crowns as they can be ruthless and are powerful.
She couldn’t ignore Illian’s orders so no, she had to and its good she’s proceeding with the mission as ordered.
He cares for her but I wish Vasalie would just tell him some of the truth regarding her illnesses
He definitely is intrigued by her
I didn’t expect him to be since he’s a general but this spices things up. He is calculative and observant so if he saw her then he most likely did unless he didnt see her dance.
