Cursed Daughters – Day Five

In traditional media, women are often the ones counting the time between a phone call or a date. Cursed Daughters has a habit of turning certain stereotypes on its head. Where else have you seen an example of this in the book?

What do you think of the author having Zubby be the one talking about the amount of time that has passed? What impact does this have on you as the reader?

When Zubby describes how he found himself drowning, he describes being in a dream-like state. Who do you think caused Zubby to walk into the water? Was it Mo? Or another spirit or was Zubby just not in the right headspace?

In Chapter III, Eniiyi says that she feels Mo taking up more and more space. Do you think the theory in which Eniiyi and Mo share a body is given more weight with this description?

Why do you think Eniiyi was drenched after her sleepwalking incident?

In Chapter IV, we learn that Eniiyi and Zubby have been dating for four months. What do you think of the delay of her introducing him to her family?

Osagie also returns in Chapter IV. What do you make of this?

When Grandma West finds Eniiyi, do you think she is talking to her grandniece or to her daughter?

In Chapter V, Eniiyi visits Mo’s old room and finds water damage. Do you think this was caused by a pipe leaking or something else?

Zubby finally finds out the truth about Eniiyi. What do you think of how he took it? His first response to Eniiyi is to say that it must be hard. Do you think that not many people ask her this?

Who do you think was the figure in Chapter X?

Eniiyi decides to confront her uncle (Mo’s brother) during his visit. Why do you think she was never told the details of Mo’s death?

What do you think of the first chapter of Part VII? From Ebun’s brother being very wealthy to how Tolu treated Ebun?

While at the party, Ebun gets distracted by a man. Who do you think this man is and what do you think his relationship with Ebun is?

When Eniiyi asks about her father, Ebun is very reluctant to say who it is. Ebun even goes so far as to say to her own mother that Eniiyi’s father is dead. Do you also question the truth of that statement?

What sort of damage do you think Ebun’s temper caused to her relationship with her daughter?

    1. Mr Osagie is the one rocking up at the house with flowers on a regular basis. He is clearly pursuing Ebun and she is showing the least amount of interest.
    2. Zubby knowing exactly how many days and hours he’s been waiting for Eniiyi to call is just another way of flipping the script. It’s not the woman waiting, but the man. We know he’s serious.
    3. This is an interesting question because it could be either one of these. Is Zubby a part of the Curse. Is he just reacting as all men of the Falodun curse over the generations? In my opinion it’s most likely to do with the Curse and not just his headspace
    4. Yes it does. Even if it’s just psychological on Eniiyi’s part, Mo is dominating her life more and more.
    5. Perhaps she was sweating from the exertion.
    6. Eniiyi like every other female member of her family is weary of introducing a male into the fold. The Curse hangs over every aspect of their lives, and perhaps she just wanted Zubby to herself for a little while longer.
    7. My initial reaction to his return was that he might possibly be Eniiyi’s father.
    8. I believe she’s talking to Monife.
    9. The water damage is also mentioned earlier. I think it’s more than just a leaking pipe. I think there’s more to this. Something more sinister. Something linked to the Curse.
    10. Zubby is the first person to really care enough to ask that question. Of course this is significant. No one had ever really acknowledged just how hard it was for Eniiyi to be mistaken for Mo all the time.
    11. I truly believe that is Mo. Or the spirit of Mo.
    12. Mo’s death had been a suicide and her family most probably wanted to protect her from the truth.
    13. Tolu treated Ebun like she was invisible after his sister died. When they meet again properly at a children’s party he is shocked to see just how much Ebun’s daughter resembles Mo.
    14. I have a feeling the man she met at the pool party was her daughter’s father….maybe.
    15. I definitely question the truth of that statement. Somehow Ebun is trying really hard to keep the father of Eniiyi a secret.
    16. Ebun is angry. She’s angry that her mother and her aunt are convinced her daughter is a reincarnation of her cousin. Perhaps she’s angry because she half believes it herself and doesn’t want the same fate for Eniiyi.

    1. I’m not sure.
    2. It shows that he was waiting for her call and that he was patient.
    3. It could be Mo, or it could be that maybe he just blacked out?
    4. Definitely.
    5. Mo being subtle?
    6. I really don’t blame her, but maybe she doesn’t want them talking about the curse.
    7. He is so cute.
    8. Monife.
    9. Is it Mo trying to get through to someone? A ceiling doesn’t bulge out like that overnight.
    10. He’s so great! And, no, she does not.
    11. In Chapter VIII, I assume? Monife – the theme is water and drowning.
    12. They were trying to protect her, maybe.
    13. The well-off relatives always forget about the poor side of the family. He was definitely surprised.
    14. Not sure, maybe the baby daddy?
    15. It is always convenient to say someone died. I don’t believe her, obviously.
    16. Eni might become resentful as she gets older, maybe.

    1. Eniyii waited more than two weeks before she called Zubby, showing that he wasn’t that big of a priority to her or she doesn’t resolve to please a man because it is expected.
Then there is also Mr Osagie waiting on Ebun with flowers while she hasn’t even mentioned the man to her family.

    2. Zubby being so precise with how much time has passed clearly shows how much Eniiyi has been on his mind. This could mean he’s really serious about her but also very patient.

    3. I think it can go either way. But I’m mostly leaning towards it being the work of The Curse.

    4. Definitely, yes. It’s not just the physical comparisons but it’s also taking a mental toll on her and the way she has recently start to think about things.

    5. My mind immediately went to the water stains in Monife’s bedroom, and how Eniiyi described it as bulging, as if its’s ready to burst; like being a statement.
But it could be many factors…

    6. I honestly think she just wants more privacy between them. Once it’s out there, talks of the curse/warnings and the future will probably overpower most conversations.

    7. Feels like with him being more present that he’ll play an important role because we don’t really have men gain attraction in the story apart from GB and Zubby.

    8. I think she’s talking to Monife.

    9. I think it’s the curse. Just one of those warning signs of it to make one think more on how things will play out eventually.

    10. I think she feels relieved that someone could finally sympathize with her situation. It also shows that Zubby is different.
She’s probably never been asked that before…

    11. The spirit of Mo?

    12. Their way of protecting her/her peace of mind? Or maybe suicide overall isn’t talked about much?

    13. It seems the brothers just lead their own life; no relationship between them.
Tolu definitely “forgot” about her. He seemed surprised by Ebun’s presence but also the shock of how much Ebun’s daughter looks like his sister.

    14. Possibly a past relationship that didn’t work out? Eniyii’s father maybe?

    15. I highly doubt he’s actually dead… it’s all just to keep him and their story secret.

    16. We already saw the very awkward homecoming between Eniiyi and Ebun meaning it has already made cracks. Fear made Ebun harden up and it’s purely to keep her daughter safe.
But it could be costly meaning it might also drive Eniiyi further away.

    1. In as much as the women in this book wanted love they let the men be the ones to do the chasing for most part. I can only think of two examples, the first being how Zubby was chasing Eniiyi and was still friend zoned and how Osagie chased after Ebun.

    2. I love that the a man is doing the chasing and he is the one sharing his feelings on the waiting and it’s not the woman, as it is always portrayed.

    3. I honestly don’t know what to make of it.

    4. I just think that if you are told something everyday your mind begins to give you all the reasons that it might be true so that you too start believing what everyone is saying.

    5. It’s probably sweat but probably has something to do with how Mo ended her life.

    6. Honestly four months is still too soon. I don’t see any delay here.

    7. What a persistent man clearly he really loves Ebun or wants something from her.

    8. Always her daughter after all she always thought Eniiyi was Mo.

    9. Again linked to how Mo died the water has a deeper meaning.

    10. Sunny really cares about Eniiyi and it shows in how he cares about the things most people overlook.

    11. Probably Mo.

    12. Given that it was suicide it was probably very hard on them and how they blamed each other for everything it was a situation that would be very difficult to explain. But I think they were supposed to tell her the truth sooner regardless.

    13. For most part Tolu disregarded Ebun but he also resented her after Mo’s passing. Yet another place where Ebun didn’t belong and was made to feel out of place.

    14. Definitely someone linked to her past.

    15. From how Ebun was acting I could tell that it’s all a lie and she is just choosing to protect Eniiyi or maybe even herself from the truth.

    16. It created distant between them and lack of security because Eniiyi didn’t feel her mother’s love.

That is a tough question, I am not sure.
I guess it shows that man are also sometimes the one waiting for the call/reaching out.
It isn’t clear what drew him into the water.
I wouldn’t say sharing the same body – just their connection.
She is worried about what the women in her life will think.
He is clearly going to play some role in the story.
I think a combination of both.
    Probably a pipe leak.
I think it shows his caring nature.
    I thought perhaps Eniiyi’s father.
I think they did not want her to feel like her future was going to be anything like Mo’s which ended in tragedy.
It’s sad that Tolu and Ebun aren’t close after all they shared the same loss.
    I think it’s possibly Enyii’s father.
I don’t think he’s dead no, perhaps it just feels that way because he is so absent from their lives.
I think her loosing her temper and the way she behaved will have a traumatic effect. I think it stems from a place of fear of Enyii’s life.

I think another example of this would be some of the women in this book chasing the men or maybe Osagie being the romantic instead of Ebun.

I think it was a very cute detail to their love story showing the amount of interest he had in her from the get go.

I definitely think was a setup by Mo for Z and Eni to meet, there’s no other explanation.

Definitely! I think Mo was coming through stronger when Z and Eni started spending more and more time together.

I really feel like she was somehow crossing planes with Mo and then she would wake up in the last state Mo was in.

It’s totally understandable. I think she knew how the women would react as well as bringing up the curse, but I also think she wanted to have Z for herself for a little longer.

I think he really cares for Ebun and wants to make it work, she’s just stubborn.

I think she was talking to Mo in this instance.

It might just be a pipe leaking as the house is very old and there isn’t men doing maintenance in and around the house.

I think he was very sympathetic but I also think that he didn’t understand to the full extent.

    I think it was Mo.

I think because there is definitely something to hide, something more than her and GB breaking up.

We never hear anything from Ebun’s brothers so it did not come as a surprise that he lived a lavish life. Tolu on the other hand definitely has resentment towards Ebun.

    This might be Eni’s father.

I think she just doesn’t want to tell then who Eni’s dad is because of the curse.

It definitely broke the last bit of relationship and trust there was at that moment in time.

We see it between mother and daughter. Ebun with Osagie and Eniiyi w Zubby.

The author is showing us that Eniiyi a woman who is cursed to chase the man and have him be like water in her palms is now in the driver’s seat where the man is chasing her.

It’s a sort of foreshadowing of the curse being broken or flipped on its head.

Sounds like the curse… must be the curse.

Yes. I mean from her birth she was already removed, and Mo was centre stage. She wasn’t even given an opportunity to be herself and figure out her own path without this Mo ID being attached to her.

Don’t blame her, it hasn’t boded well for those before her so ofc there will be some reluctance to introduce him for fear that the curse will be activated by their meeting him.

Pretty convinced that Osagie is her father now. But I could be wrong.

These ladies have in their heads that she is Mo, so obvs Mo. Despite my frustration lol.
It likely has some reference to the Curse but it could also just be a leak and nothing more.

Ofc, they don’t they decided who she was before she even had words out of her mouth. They don’t see her as her own person so it must be so validating for Eniiyi that he asked and seems to care to know. It is so damaging to reduce a person to someone else instead of seeing their value in them being a person.

    Perhaps the ghost of Mo.

Shame man, I think it was their way of shielding her from the truth – but honestly the truth would have been a better approach from the outset.

Oke is wild. I don’t like it, I don’t care for the reasoning for his behaviour.

    He is defs not dead.

The most important thing a child needs from their mother, while parents in general is to feel safe, seen, and accepted. I think Ebun was unable to give this to Eniiyi and as a result some distance has formed against the. But I think w time and some vulnerability (from both their sides), they could repair their relationship.

    1. I’ve seen it multiple times on books
    2. I don’t really mind. It means he’s really into the relationship.
    3. It was definitely Mo, or whatever water spirit Mo is linked to
    4. Absolutely
    5. Was it not raining?
    6. I actually understood her hesitance. They can be over the top, so it was quite understandable
    7. Osagie is smitten
    8. Since the dementia, she’s always talking to her daughter, not her niece.
    9. I didn’t think there was anything amiss when I was reading that passage. I think it’s just water damage
    10. Yeah, they live outside her experience so they don’t really know how she’s feeling
    11. Mo?
    12. I think there’s no other reason than that the book needed to keep it sort of a secret. The grandmothers were always feeding her head with ‘nonsense’, so they could have told her if they really wanted to.
    13. I think Tolu’s actions towards Ebun are justified, I’m not saying that he’s right, just that his actions are justified. And he was shocked by how much Eniiyi looks like Monife.
    14. I was wondering the same, couldn’t think of anyone unfortunately.
    15. Ebun is trying too hard to keep Eniiyi’s father a secret.
    16. The relationship is broken already. It would be nice to see them repair it.
