1. No I don’t. I come from a very non-sporty family so we usually are only aware if it’s a very special occasion like the World Cup or the Olympics. The average game goes unnoticed.
2. Mo’s way of describing the boys on the field is a little bit like the way a boy would describe girls. But a bit more poetic.
3. There is something very powerful about Mo’s description of this boy. Knowing what we know about Mo something will definitely happen between them.
4. The author handles depression beautifully. It’s seen as a heavy weight that comes over a person either slowly or very suddenly. This is a very accurate description.
5. Ebun’s growth through the novel is clear. She starts off a mere shadow next to Mo, but gradually comes into her own as she gets older, and becomes a mother.
6. He probably left his wife because of the Curse and because he had found someone else. The Curse may have been the catalyst though.
7. This interaction is typical of Mo. She is feisty and strong, and not bothered by people’s opinions, and what is expected of her.
8. I think this book is less about the men, and more about how the women actually become stronger because of the obstacles thrown in their path. They form a very strong bond and definitely become a stronger force as a unit of women.
9. This was a tough situation because onone hand it was rude to have just left her at the party alone, and at the same time Kalu could not have predicted Mo’s insecurities. Mo doesn’t at first glance seem to have any insecurities, but she clearly does as demonstrated in her reaction to being left alone.
10. I’ve been wondering about that. I think he is.
11. Eniiyi came home to three women living very close but separate lives. They are all headstrong, steeped in tradition and quite stubborn to change their way of life. It’s a scene of domestic bliss in the absence of any male participation.
12. In many ways this is most likely for the best. Why upset Grandma West more than is necessary. She is clearly mourning her daughter still.
13. She’s dreaming of Monife. Perhaps it is a way for her aunt to communicate with her. It also makes the notion that she is a reincarnation of Mo even stronger. -
1. I’m part of the ones who’ll be arguing which team is the best.
2. For someone who claimed to not follow the sport, she described it perfectly. They dance with the ball on their feet.
3. Yeah, I think something will happen. I’m sure of it.
4. She described it well, I hope we get to see more of the theme throughout the book. I love that it wasn’t specifically labelled as depression, but a bout of sadness that weighs her down. I think that’s exactly how depression is.
5. I was so surprised at the time jump. I kinda wanted more of her, and how her aunt handled her daughter.
6. It’s hard to say, but it seems like he left because of her condition. Like he got tired of her in between. But the tiredness could also be from the curse, I think he was just tired.
7. That was a bold move from Mo, and I love it for her. Go after what you want!
8. I think it’s the latter, but it’s interesting to see which direction the author will take. If it’s indeed a curse, I wonder if Eniiyi will be able to break free from it.
9. Mo was childish in how she handle it, but at the same time you understand exactly why she reacted that way. Kalu treated the situation with some maturity, I’ll admit that I didn’t see it coming.
10. Oh yeah, I think the prologue does mention golden boy now that I think of it.
11. I think it’s expected for people in the same household to lead very different lives, even though they’re in the same place physically.
12. I think they don’t want to upset her, you know how people with dementia are easily upset? Yeah I think it’s mostly that.

6. He definitely never left because of the curse – it’s her own fault, though, for not telling him; people are looking for partners, not patients.

8. So far, this story has only been “slice-of-life” with no evidence of an actual curse…

11. Seems like a normal homecoming to me, sans the hugging – a hug was definitely in order.

1. Nope I don’t. We hardly watch sports.
2. The same way most women would probably describe them. Wanting to prove that she doesn’t know much about the sport but describing it all so well and revealing that she actually knows a thing or two and that she’s also very humorous.
3. Given how interested she is. I definitely think something will happen.
4. I actually missed it when I was reading and only got to understand it now with this question. I appreciate how the author showed the importance of a support structure. People to pick you up when you are down.
5. Like any younger sibling she was a little annoying but as she grows older she is such an amazing sister one that is caring and considerate.
6. Definitely something else. Probably her illness. Some people cannot stand inconvenience. As soon as they need to put in the work they would rather walk away.
7. I honestly love women that can shoot their own shot but I felt that she needed to respect her current boyfriend enough to end things properly before just deciding there and then that her relationship was over because of Kalu who she didn’t even know prior to that first meet up at the match.
8. Definitely more about women and their power it’s just that it takes those encounters with these men for them to get those hard lessons.
9. I too would honestly be angry is someone left me to be all alone. I guess for once the butterflies were gone and they got to experience some real problems. It’s things such as this that help you to get to know each other.
10. I think so. I am starting to think his not as innocent as he had been made to seem this far.
11. I found it normal. Homes with many people more so elders have such awkward but normal encounters.
12. I got where Ebun was coming from but I can imagine how difficult it can be to play along with something so serious. It was bound to confuse Eniiye.

2. I don’t think there’s anything strange to her descriptions. She’s familiar with some of them and I feel that she kind of tells us what features first come to mind when she sees them, or how differently she perceives them.
3. I think there will definitely be something between the two with how quickly Mo is entranced by the boy’s presence.

5. Ebun definitely showed character growth. I mean we get to see her as a mere girl and then as a mother. The changes are evident.
6. I believe that he left because he couldn’t handle her autoimmune disease anymore. Like he simply just became too tired to handle it all. But this could also be a way in which the curse works?
7. I feel this says a lot about the type of character Mo is. She is strong willed but I also feel that she’s trying to prove something knowing that the curse is looming. It’s very bold of her as well and it reminds me of that mermaid reference in the prologue.
8. I’m loving the story so far! There’s still a lot that needs to be told before I can make a solid opinion but at this point I think it’s more about the women and their journeys.
9. Initially both came off as rude. Kalu leaving Mo for such a long period of time and then Mo kind of retaliating by dancing with another boy.
But both did end up having a mature conversation about it which at that moment showed a lot of promise for their relationship.10. I don’t believe it’s fully about him. But I do think he could be a catalyst in how things came to be at the end of Mo’s life.
11. They’ve all lived together for years but each member still goes about their lives separately, and they all had very different greeting approaches.
I think the interaction between Eniiyi and her mother was definitely strange, and maybe a little sad.12. It is a likeable strategy to keep the peace for the dementia patient. But it also upset Eniiyi which is understandable as she’s probably only ever been seen as a version of Mo.
13. I think it shows that there’s definitely a connection binding the two together but the dream specifically feels like a warning to me.

4. I felt the author handled this bout of depression quite well because as much as I felt for Mo in that moment, the feeling did not stay with me.
5. Mo’s strong personality has wrapped off of Ebun’s in all the right ways and we get to see her slowly coming out of her shell.
6. At this point, I am convinced that everything is because of the curse.
7. I am for women going for whatever they want. With that, Mo made me feel proud!
8. I actually had not thought of the latter but I absolutely love the idea of the women making it despite the curse being in their way.
9. Kalu was wrong to bring Mo to a party where she doesn’t know anyone then expect her to find her way around. Was Mo right to react as she did? Nope, she should’ve at least tried to find Kalu. Overall, glad they handled it like that in the end.

12. I think playing along would make sense for Grandma West but might not be easy for Eniiyi to do so.

Not so much family but definitely my friends.
It shows that she has interest in guys at that point but not enough in those around her.
Something definitely happened since we know she did what she did because of him.
I think it was a pretty good and accurate depiction of what some people that deals with depression deals with.
You can definitely see she has a strong personality from the beginning but it was so nice seeing this young version of hr being so feisty.
If the curse is real, then he might have left because of that. If the curse is but a myth he was a being a coward and left her because he couldn’t deal with her illness and only looked for someone who could take care of him.
I think she was very brave for that move but I think she should have broken up with her then boyfriend first.
I definitely think that it is more about the women rising to the occasion. We have seen some that couldn’t deal with the husbands leaving and we also saw those who kept on living their lives and looking for love even after what happened.
I think Mo could’ve handled it better to begin with but they definitely did both handle it well afterwards. I think they quickly learned to communicate in that moment.
She might have been her own reason as she was already dealing with depression but I also believe something happened between them that pushed her to that point.
I was definitely expecting a more lively home but it’s quite sad.
I think Ebun also just wants to keep the peace since she was once the one to deal with the whole Mo situation.
It kind of feels like Mo is trying to show her something. Maybe what led to her death of what happened in her finals moments. But this also feeds into the idea that they are somehow connected.

Yes, I do have and Im always in the mix and my team is the best no matter what everyone says.
I think she reacted like a normal teenager.
Something might happen, I think she’s obsessing over him already and knowing Mo, she will do whatever it takes to have Kalu.
I think it was well handled, a bit settle and Mo is not even aware of what she’s going through.
She was Mo’s a pillar of strength and I think Mo’s death had a huge impact on her. They had a wonderful bond together like sisters. The change was expected, they were young and innocent.
It might have been for something else, I believe something sinister might have happened, but the topic of the curse overshadowed those reasons.
Mo is a go-getter, she is one girl who always ensure they get whatever they set their eyes on, and it does not matter what it takes. From the day she saw Kalu at the football match her mind was made up, Kalu is a challenge she needs to conquer, that is why I was not surprised when she made first move.
Im loving the book so far and I think it’s a bit of both, these women keep on rising above despite men leaving them every second at chance when they think they found the one. They still aspire to conquer, curse or no curse.
They both failed to act accordingly; Kalu shouldn’t be leaving his guest with strangers for such a long time without checking up on them, that was the first mistake. Mo on the other hand shouldn’t be dancing with strangers while knowing these people might be Kalu’s friend, if she’s mad at Kalu she needs to address it with him and not play the revenge card.
A part of me feels like it’s too early to think Kalu might be that guy but at the same time you look at how Mo reacts around him, one might say a bit too obsessed and with such comes heavy consequences that could have driven Mo to the edge.
A heavy scene. From how tense her relationship with her mother is to how Grandma West is battling with dementia. It is never a lovely time to have loved ones battling such a condition. A part of me knew that days where Eniiyi could be mistaken for Mo especially by Bummi as she gets older were inevitable. Grandma East is a ray of sunshine that Eniiyi truly needs.
Ebun from twenty years ago would have turned the table from such thoughts but I think she believes Grandma West has suffered enough and there’s no make her remaining year even harder. I think it is very sweet of Ebun to suggest Eniiyi should play along.
There’s a connection between Mo and her, I don’t think these dreams are just dreams. They have a deeper meaning, and Mo could be trying to communicate something with Eniiyi.

When I was younger we took football very seriously. Each family member had a team and country they supported and we would square off. The World Cup was insane, we really unhinged as a family during that time. But I love them all and don’t watch football much anymore. All my boys are now retired.
It is defs more poetic but it does seem like she knows more than she let off. Football is very much a dance, as are most sports.
Something will defs happen between them – big or small is yet to be determined.
I think routine is so important, that structure gives predictability to a situation which helps us navigate the ups and downs of life. I do think depression is inevitable, what’s important is to not get stuck and that’s why the people you surround yourself with are so crucial.
Dude is wild, it really upsets me when people bail when things get tough. Like?? Be serious. I think Mo portrays herself as someone super strong but all she wanted was someone to love her enough to “break the curse” like we see in fairytales, but he couldn’t do that, he chose an easy route… in my view.
I think we have a fatherless society where men make babies and rarely stay. I think these women are desiring what many of us do – and that is to have men who are present, who support and understand us, who accept and love us. Who respect us enough to stay when things get a little tough. I think the curse is legitimate, but I think it’s also a metaphor for the things we tell ourselves that make their leaving tolerable. He left because I’m cursed is better to say and accept than to say, he left me because perhaps I wasn’t good enough. I think the women are trying to navigate this… are they leaving because of the curse or are they leaving because there are many options for them and I can’t be me if it isn’t palatable, or I can’t be me if I want him to stay. It’s an interesting thought.
The dream seems like a warning to me and I hope that Eniiyi meets a different fate.

1) Yes, I have brothers that support apposing soccer teams.
2) Honestly, I really liked the way she described them. Accurate with a sense of humour.
3) Yes, Mo seems like the type to go after what she wants; so something will definitely happen.
4) I genuinely think Mo is actually bipolar because she has extremely good “highs” and really depressive “lows”. I appreciate how the author illustrates this but allows the reader to form their own conclusions.
5) I love that we get to watch Ebun grow and come into her own. We get a front row seat into what will eventually shape her into a woman.
6) Given that none of the woman thus far have been spared from the curse; I’m inclined to believe that it was due to the curse that he left.
7) Mo is impulsive but I honestly admire her for going after what she wants.
8) I’m really loving the story thus far and especially enjoying the authors writing style too. At this point in the story I think it’s a good combination of both; but I am proud of the woman who have tried their best to rise above their circumstances.
9) Mo behaved childishly but given the circumstances we can give her a little grace. I would hate to he left alone at a party to fend for myself surrounded by people I barely know. Kalu showed a level of maturity that pleasantly surprised me. I’m happy they both came to an understanding in the end.

11) It was a little sad seeing how all the woman in the household all lead very different lives. They could have made more of an effort to show a united front even if only for the day she came home.
12) There’s no point in upsetting Grandma West more than necessary. She’s an old woman and she’s sick; so if pretending gives her some peace and happiness then why not?!
13) She is definitely spiritually connected to her aunt and Mo is trying to communicate with her through her dreams.
