House of Blight – Day Three

Edira wakes next to her brothers after having spent the night on the floor. She is awoken by an attendant and quickly learns that the magic in the house can only be controlled by the Ferngloves and the attendents. Do you believe that this access control is a way to shackle Edira or do you think it could be more of a safety precaution for the magic used?

As we know, Edira has been dyeing her hair for years. In Chapter Six, she sees her true hair colour for the first time since being a child. Do you dye your hair? If so, do you feel the same as Edira, that you can feel safe behind different hair. Or does a part of you miss your natural hair colour.

Vora warns Edira to be careful of who she trusts. Who do you think Vora is warning Edira against?

Do you think the mark is branding? Do you believe that Orin has sinister intentions with giving Edira the mark?

Orion comes across as quite generous. Do you think thus is his true nature?

Edira questions the high reward that comes with handing over an everjewel. Orin sort of explains that the jewels keep the Evers as themselves. Why do you think Orin glanced over this?

Do you think the way Edira felt towards the end of Chapter Six was because of Orin’s glamour?

What are your first impressions of the Waterstones?

What do you think of Amalyssa and Tasia’s threat? Should Edira have provoked them? Or do they just need to be brought down a peg?

When Edira takes a closer look at the tree, she realizes the grotesque truth of the tree. Do you think after Rorik explained what the tree is, it makes the image less grotesque?

Do you think the Ever’s could have been the cause of blight? When Edira is looking at the grotesque tree she feels the need to cure something.

What relationship do you think Rorik and Edira will have?

What did you think of Edira’s first training session at the Fernglove estate?

Edira mentions feeling an itch along her skin and manages to get herself excused from dinner. Do you think it is because she unknowingly entered a deal with Tasia and Amalyss?

What do you think is the real reason the two young ladies wanted to see Edira’s threadmending. Do you think they are covering up a secret regarding what had happened to Edira when she tried to mend?

Orin tells Edira that she will have nothing to fear from the other Evers on the estate. Understandably, Edira is still worried. Orin reassures her that he will make the Evers listen to him. What actions do you think Orin will take to ensure that he is listened to?

With the way some of the members of the house behave and the tense relationship with the other ever families i think it is more of a safety precaution.

I have been dying my hair for the longest time and can definitely relate to Edira. recently i have stopped dying it and I am letting my natural colour row out so that my hair can be healthier.

Definitely Amalyss and Tasia but I have a feeling she could be speaking about Orin too. He seems to be acting way too nice and it just goes against everything we know about evers so i am waiting for the other shoe to drop with regards to him.

I believe there is more to it. I think it will act like a tracker and controlling device at some stage.

I do think so but that doesnt mean i dont believe that at times he has ulterior motives behind his generosity.

I think there is a secret behind why they are so coveted and he does not want the mortals to find out. Like maybe it is the reason behind their immortality or why they are able to heal so quickly. Therefore, all Evers keep this information a secret.

Possibly. I think it is a mix between a natural and forced reaction.

I think they are a threat and dangerous. I think we will see some sort of conflict later on in the book involving them.

I think they need to be brought down a peg and I love that Edira challenges them back and stands her ground. It makes their relationship that more interesting and always has us guessing what sort of drama is going to happen next.

No, i think it makes it even more disturbing.

I think that the blight is coming from the tree. Like the left over life force or vibe coming off the tree is poisoning the ground and the air.

I think they will become good friends and have a lot of banter between the two of them.

I thought it was funny and awkward but I am looking forward to when the real training starts.

Yes i do, i think that the magic is calling in on the deal they made to meet up after the training.

There was definitely something suspicious going on. They were very tense and scared once Edira starting experiencing the side effects and even before she first attempted the healing, Tasia was trying to convince Amalyssa to not go through with it. There is definitely something more sinister at play when it comes to the reason they are so interested in threadmenders.

I think he will make a public example of the two girls when it comes to their punishment’s. How the Evers punish each other will have to be seen but i do think that the consequences are going to be serious.

    – Ferngloves controlling the house’s magic is partly for “safety,” but mostly to keep Edira powerless. They can limit her freedom and force her to obey — it’s a gilded cage.

    – I don’t dye my hair, but I understand why Edira does. It’s a shield, a way to hide her true self from those who’d use it. Seeing her natural hair again reminds her who she really is underneath the disguise.

    – Vora’s warning Edira mainly about Orin but it could also be about the Fernglove sisters or even Rorik. In Willowfell, trust is dangerous.

    – The mark is branding disguised as protection. Orin wants to bind Edira to him in a way that’s permanent — so she can’t run or defy him.

    – Orin’s generosity could be an act or he is actually being generous and trustworthy, but there isn’t enough yet to convince me he is kind so I think it’s all about control and making Edira feel like she owes him everything.

    – Orin glancing over the everjewel truth shows he avoids details because the truth might make Edira question what else he’s hiding. The jewels are linked to power and maybe the blight.

    – Yes I think the way Edira feels is because of Orin’s glamour it clouds her instincts. It pulls her in just enough that she doubts her suspicion of him.

    – The first impression of the Waterstones is that they seem wealthy, cold, and entitled. They see Edira as a tool, not a person. They’re threats in polite clothing.

    – Amalyssa & Tasia’s threat made right to stand up to them Edira. They’re bullies who needed to be reminded she’s not weak. But it’s risky to provoke people with that much power.

    – Rorik’s explanation the grotesque tree makes it worse, it’s proof that the Ferngloves treat living beings as resources. It’s not just creepy, it’s cruel.

    – I think it is very possible the Evers cause the Blight, their magic might be unstable or corrupted. The blight could be fallout from trying to cheat Death or twist nature.

    – Edira & Rorik’s relationship: shows that even though they clash they need each other, it could grow into trust or something more, but danger hangs over them both.

    – Edira’s first training session shows how badly the Ferngloves want to squeeze every drop of power from her, they don’t care if it destroys her.

    – Edira’s skin itch is probably linked to the sisters’ secret magic, they might have cursed her or tied her life to their will.

    – They know something happened when she mended — maybe it failed or revealed a hidden truth. They want to keep her guessing.

    – Orin promising safety from the Evers for me feels like he is using bargains/threats and blackmail but but really, he’s making sure he stays in charge while Edira does his bidding.

    1. I think it is a way to shackle Edira to the house and its inhabitants.
    2. I have never dyed my hair (it’s too dark for that!)
    3. Against the Evers in the house – all humans know they are cunning, deceiving and dangerous.
    4. Yes, the mark is like a brand. Yes, I do. He’s essentially binding her to him and his house forever, with no chance of escape.
    5. I can’t quite place Orin – I want to trust the kindness of his character, but too many people appear kind and hide a dangerous facade.
    6. He possibly doesn’t want a human to know too much about the Evers’ potential weakness, i.e. the fact that they need a stone to remain Evers.
    7. No, thus far he hasn’t done anything to hurt her and the glamour around her hasn’t been affecting her.
    8. They are stuck up and just as vicious as any Ever.
    9. I think that they are ruthless despite their size and that, even though someone ought to bring them down a peg, it’s a job best left to their own kind, like Orin.
    10. No. If anything, that makes it somehow worse. It’s truly something from a nightmare.
    11. It’s quite possible that it came from them and that they are now trying to hide their hand in the whole situation.
    12. They’ll probably end up sleeping together.
    13. It was unorthodox and slightly unproductive, but it definitely fits in with the Evers’ eccentric nature.
    14. Yes, the two are cunning and very clever. They’ve clearly been tricking people for a while. And when Edira said ‘sure’, she smelled the same floral scent that Orin gave off during their bargain.
    15. I think they want to see if they can be healed, should the blight spread to them (or if they ARE in fact the reason behind Blight in the first place). They are definitely hiding something.
    16. He will likely use magic or threats to get his family to comply.

✨I think it is a safety precaution as she does not know much about the Ever magic.

✨I do dye my hair but it’s close to my natural colour. I have been dyeing for so many years I dislike my natural colour now.

✨Tasia and Amalyss but I have a bad feeling about Rorik. Vora doesn’t seem to trust most of them though.

✨I think it is a form of branding since it is permanent. It does help her but I wonder if it is not another way to strengthen her abilities.

✨I think the Ever’s clever way with words makes him seem more kind and he might have some ulterior motives. He already lied to Edira before about Mavis so he could be keeping more secrets.

✨I think it is an Ever secret that he doesn’t quite trust her with yet. It could also be a way to overthrow the Evers if she were to learn their weaknesses.

✨His magic and mark could have influenced her but she does seem to be growing fonder of him

✨They seem rich, cruel, and sees Edira as only a threadmender and nothing more. There will definitely be some more challenges involving them later.

✨They seem to have it out for Edira and I’m glad she stood up for herself. Unfortunately she didn’t know about their magic and she was tricked regardless.

✨I think it makes it worse but to the Ever’s it must be what they believe is right. Edira clearly felt the “wrongness” of the tree.

✨I think so. I think it is natures way of restoring the balance as they are cheating death with their immortality and their glamours.

✨I liked the encounter between them with the training but I am still suspicious of him. He does seem to want to help her improve her abilities.

✨It was definitely tense. She is clearly a tool they want to perfect and keep a careful eye on. The moth is a cruel training method.

✨Yes I think that is when the twins decided they want to start “playing” with her.

✨I think they just wanted to see if she was strong enough to heal Mavis and how long she would last before she would be killed for being too weak.

✨He is in charge and the others will most likely listen to him (besides maybe Rorik) but he also could have done it to gain Edira’s trust and have her to himself.

I don’t know why but I am very trusting of these Ferngloves because of Orin, I know he will move heaven and earth to keep her safe.

Nay, I don’t dye my hair.

The two sisters likely and probably Marvis.

I don’t think there are any sinister intentions, but you’re asking me this makes me wonder if there are.

Yes, I think his true nature is to be generous.

They probably have a greater significance that he doesn’t want to share with her right now.

    I don’t think so.

Honestly, its hard to keep up with all of these sub houses lol, they seem fine, I dunno, lol.

No, those lot defo need to brought down a peg. They are serious liabilities.

    Yes, I do think so.

I hope they land up together, I just like their vibe a lot more.

I think I’m glad Rorik is her coach because I want them together all the time.

    No, I don’t think that’s the reason.

I think they wanted to se if she were any better than the enders who came before her. I’m sure there was other hidden agenda but I do think they wanted to see if she was any different.

I mean, being the head of the family comes with all the power and authority he should need to keep them in check.

I think it’s more for safety than for control. There’s a lot of tension and a lot of Evers under one roof.

I don’t dye my hair that often so I won’t say that it’s for safety. If I had Edira’s hair colour, I would definitely miss it!

I think she’s mainly referring to Orin because he’s the only one she trusts so far (with her brothers).

I do think the mark is branding. However, I don’t think that the intentions are sinister, but there are intentions there.

There is definitely something behind his generosity.

I have a theory that the everjewels might relate to the stones in the Prologue, which is why they’re hard to find.

I do think so, as soon as he breaks the connection it’s as if she comes back to herself.

I don’t like the Waterstones, especially how they act towards threadmenders. They remind me of Tasia and Amalyss, though it’s clear they don’t like the Waterstones.

They need to be brought down a peg. It’s clear that they’re trying to test Edira’s limits.

I mean it does…but it still weirds me out because they bury them at the root, but then parts of the body sprout into the tree???

I never thought of this possibility. The Evers in the tree could also have been affected by blight like Mavis.

I feel like something more will blossom between Rorik and Edira. While her talks with Orin feel glamoured, Rorik isn’t afraid to push her.

I was expecting something different. Is Rorik training her for something else? Do Evers have affiliations with animals or just Rorik? The moth made me think of the beetle that kept showing up – was that Rorik or Orin?

I think it is since she was done with what she was doing.

I wonder if they have the blight as well, as it’s a cut that can’t be healed.

I think he is going to use Tasia and Amalyss as examples.

I think it’s a bit of both. But mostly safety.

I do sometimes but it’s close to my natural colour so not much difference. With Edira, it’s a sort of shield, a mask, for her protection. Very different.

Amalyss and Tasia are sketchy, so I’m sure some of that warning was about them.

I think it is what he says it is. I don’t think it’s a brand.

I think to an extent, yes. We don’t know much about him yet, but so far I’m not getting bad vibes from him.

I don’t think he’s ready to share all his secrets yet. They’ve only just met so I’m sure he’s not telling her things because he doesn’t fully trust her either. Or maybe it’s for the safety of all Evers 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m sure some of it could be due to that. I’m not sure it’s necessarily intentional though. Maybe just a ‘side effect’ of the magic?

I’m not sure if they’re friend or foe yet, but I think there may be some sort of conflict in the future.

I have mixed feelings about them. The way they speak to Edira, the stunts they pull, I don’t know yet if it’s because they’re young and just causing trouble, or if they’re an actual problem. There’s more to the story with them.

    Nope. It’s still gross 😂

I was actually wondering about that. I mean it could be but I don’t know enough to come to a conclusion on how yet.

I mean I feel like they could end up together because he’s going to train her and they’ll be spending a lot of time together. But maybe that’s too obvious? Maybe they’ll just be friends.

It wasn’t much a training session though, was it?

Yes. She (sarcastically) agreed to meet them after training. It’s still an agreement.

I’m uncertain about a lot of things in this book so far, but one thing I’m certain of is that they are hiding something. I don’t think Orin knows. I think they’re scared too.

Maybe the Evers have a hierarchy and so they’re forced to listen. Maybe it has something to do with the tattoo or the houses’ magic. Who knows….

I feel that it’s a way to shackle Edira, she just doesn’t know it yet.

I have dyed my hair a couple times and always end up missing my natural hair colour a few months in.

I think she’s warning her against Lydia and her partner, as well as their girls. This warning could very well be extended to the rest of the Ferngloves but right now none of them are setting off major alarm bells.

It’s definitely branding, but also a physical manifestation of their vow. Think of the tattoos in ACOTAR, they symbolise a vow/connection.

    Yes.

There’s more to it that he didn’t explain, surely.

Most definitely, I think it’s abnormal for her to be feeling that comfortable around him. It has to be his glamour.

I appreciate the fact that Edira provoked them, the drama is amazing — and I’m really curious to see what these two have up their sleeves.

Yes, admittedly when she first started describing it, I thought they may have been the bodies of past threadmenders. It’s actually a beautiful thing, to imagine becoming one with earth in the afterlife.

    I wouldn’t be surprised.

Hopefully a romantic one cause they have SO much chemistry😭

    Interesting…

Waittt, now that I think about it yes. At first I thought it might’ve been a side effect of the gentle touch Rorik gave her after he hit the air from her lungs.

I think they’re scheming, or just bored and are treating Edira as entertainment.

I’m not sure if it was mentioned yet but can Evers do magic on each other? Otherwise I think he’ll make everyone enter into an Evervow with him.

  9. Chay (archivesbychay) Avatar

I think it’s a bit of both, but more so to shackle Edira.

I have never dyed all of my hair but I do occasionally get highlights to brighten up my hair and not feel as dull. I guess in that sense I feel the same as Edira, as it is a kind of ‘safety net.’

I think she is warning her against Orion, I get bad vibes from him despite how kind he seems.

I definitely think it is branding and he wants to ensnare her in a way without making it obvious.

No. I think Orion has his own selfish agenda that he’s hiding from Edira

I think the jewels are much more important and he doesn’t want Edira finding out so as to avoid making himself vulnerable or her finding out his true intentions.

    I don’t think so

I think they are dangerous and would harm Edira when given the chance.

They definitely need to be brought back down to earth and I love that Edira doesn’t cower against them.

Personally, I see it as a beautiful and symbolic way to honour their ancestors. It made it way less grotesque to me.

I think the Evers are the main cause of the blight and that they are hiding the truth from Edira because there will be major consequences (to her) if she cures it.

Romantic. They have so much chemistry.

I love a training scene and I can already see the enemies to lovers plot line unfolding

Yes, I think they tricked her into a deal.

Yes I think they are covering up a secret but they also seem scared for some reason

I think Orion is very powerful and that the others will have no choice but to listen to his orders.

    1) Honestly, I don’t think it’s either. I think it’s more like how we have alarm systems in our homes. It would warn Orin if someone with bad intentions or someone disingenuous is in the house. It’s less about controlling Edira and more about controlling the space around them.

    2) I do dye my hair… and no, I don’t miss my natural colour at all. Mine’s a boring mousy brown, and I dye it red, a dark auburn.

    3) I think she means the rest of the Ferngloves, especially those two awful girls. They’re clearly not to be trusted.

    4) I think it’s just a different kind of “fae agreement”. The magic is manifesting in that way because of how the bargain works. So it’s more magical contract than ownership. But hey…I got to tick off “he brands her” in my trope list!!!!!!!!

    5) I don’t know. I’m very skeptical of him being too perfect and generous. I feel like there’s a twist coming because of that.

    6) I think because if people actually knew how the everjewels work, then they could use that magic for themselves and turn themselves into Evers. And you don’t want the humans to find out that if they mine enough of these jewels, they can become everlasting.

    7) No, I’m still sceptical of her feelings for him. I DONT KNOW HOW TO FEEL

    8) They come across as very stereotypical high-class nobles, like in a Regency novel. They’re used to being prim and proper and don’t slum it with the help. Humans are beneath them.

    9) I think Edira is way out of her league with Amalyssa and Tasia. They definitely need to be brought down a peg, but they’re a lot more powerful than she is, so she should be careful about putting herself in situations that could be harmful.

    10) No. The minute Rorik explained the tree, I was really disturbed. A tree of body parts? I imagined that and it is the stuff of nightmares. Deeply horrifying.

    11) There is definitely some foreshadowing that the Evers could be the cause of the blight. A lot of the blight is written like mushrooms or fungus and this tree is very much the same kind of rotting, decomposing magic. It’s described in a similar way.

    12) I’m hoping she chooses Rorik in the end because the dislike-to-lovers tension and banter between them is everything I live for.

    13) It was kind of uneventful. They sat there breathing, and she reverted into a very YA mindset of “oh my god, he’s so cute,” which I’m struggling with because she’s meant to be 25. A lot of her behaviour feels more like a typical YA novel.

    14) There was definitely something pulling her and the minute she followed it, the feeling lessened.

    15) I do think they’re covering up a secret. I feel like she might have glowed or something and didn’t realise it and that she might be a different kind of threadmender from what her aunt was. I definitely think something happened when she tried to threadmend that they saw. I think they realised the deeper meaning of it and wanted to test it. Threadmenders aren’t supposed to heal Evers, but Edira did something and it’s going to have a big impact. It’s giving very “Chosen One” vibes.

    16) Given that he’s pretty good at bargaining, I feel like he’ll probably use his magic on them to either compel them or punish them or do something that shows they shouldn’t question his authority.

Q – Edira wakes next to her brothers after having spent the night on the floor. She is awoken by an attendant and quickly learns that the magic in the house can only be controlled by the Ferngloves and the attendents. Do you believe that this access control is a way to shackle Edira or do you think it could be more of a safety precaution for the magic used?
A – I think it could be safety issue with other Evers trying to gain access to the Fernglove estate and its inhabitants

Q – As we know, Edira has been dyeing her hair for years. In Chapter Six, she sees her true hair colour for the first time since being a child. Do you dye your hair? If so, do you feel the same as Edira, that you can feel safe behind different hair. Or does a part of you miss your natural hair colour.
A – Unfortunately, my dad’s side of the family goes grey young so I have been colouring my hair for decades. It’s the same as the original colour and I don’t miss the grey at all 😀

Q – Vora warns Edira to be careful of who she trusts. Who do you think Vora is warning Edira against?
A – The members of the Fernglove family? And other Evers?

Q – Do you think the mark is branding? Do you believe that Orin has sinister intentions with giving Edira the mark?
A – I feel like it may be a mark of protection but also makes the people feel like they are owned?

Q – Orion comes across as quite generous. Do you think thus is his true nature?
A – I really hope so, I want to believe that he truly cares for Edira and has good intentions

Q – Edira questions the high reward that comes with handing over an everjewel. Orin sort of explains that the jewels keep the Evers as themselves. Why do you think Orin glanced over this?
A – I think that it is a weak point for the Evers and he doesn’t want her to know the truth.

Q – Do you think the way Edira felt towards the end of Chapter Six was because of Orin’s glamour?
A – I think she felt that he was sincere in trying to help the Willowfell and his charm is winning her over, convincing her that Evers aren’t that bad. Or at least that he is a good person.

Q – What are your first impressions of the Waterstones?
A – They seem entitled and shouldn’t be trusted

Q – What do you think of Amalyssa and Tasia’s threat? Should Edira have provoked them? Or do they just need to be brought down a peg?
A – I don’t think Edira should have provoked them because she doesn’t yet understand their power or their characters, and her vulnerability

Q – When Edira takes a closer look at the tree, she realizes the grotesque truth of the tree. Do you think after Rorik explained what the tree is, it makes the image less grotesque?
A – I don’t think so, it sounds very macabre

Q – Do you think the Ever’s could have been the cause of blight? When Edira is looking at the grotesque tree she feels the need to cure something.
A – I feel like it may have come into being, in order to get back at the Evers for the deal that their ancestor made with Death?

Q – What relationship do you think Rorik and Edira will have?
A – As much as I like Orin (I’m still cautiously optimistic), I feel like Rorik will be the one that she ends up with

Q – What did you think of Edira’s first training session at the Fernglove estate?
A – I think she starts to realise how vulnerable and weak she is. Also she doesn’t understand how breath control will help her become stronger

Q – Edira mentions feeling an itch along her skin and manages to get herself excused from dinner. Do you think it is because she unknowingly entered a deal with Tasia and Amalyss?
A – I think so, I think it’s the deal pulling on her to fulfill it

Q – What do you think is the real reason the two young ladies wanted to see Edira’s threadmending. Do you think they are covering up a secret regarding what had happened to Edira when she tried to mend?
A – I think that they are curious about her abilities and what her limit is. Can she actually cure someone or not?

Q – Orin tells Edira that she will have nothing to fear from the other Evers on the estate. Understandably, Edira is still worried. Orin reassures her that he will make the Evers listen to him. What actions do you think Orin will take to ensure that he is listened to?
A – I think that he will punish anyone severely who doesn’t listen to him, perhaps banish them? Or imprison them?

I think it is a bit of both

I haven’t dyed my hair in years but I have been thinking of doing it

I feel she is saying that she needs to be careful around Orin

I think it is a bit of a branding, a constant reminder. But no, I believe he would not use it to control her.

I believe it is, his nature and mannerisms haven’t changed to give us cause to believe otherwise

I think there is more he wants to tell her but he is learning to trust her as well and is being careful with what he says

It could be, it may be a factor of both.

They seem very aloof and superior

They really need to be brought down! Such brats!

No it is still pretty gross!

I think it could be, maybe it has something to do with a magic accident?

I hope it will be romantic, but we will have to see!

It was a bit too much, I think again it shows the desperation and control wrapped into one

I didn’t think of that but yes, that could be it!

It is possible they have the blight as well

He might make an example – he is the head of the family and they have to listen to him
