Khaki Fever Day Four

The night after the storm brings exciting opportunities. Legend informs Bandile that Alex will be joining him on the guided walks. What do you think of this progression?

Would you have been able to follow instructions like Alex during the lion standoff?

Dirks time has finally come. Dirk takes out his frustrations on Grace after hearing that the gift basket was picked up by Ursula. Dirk did not wait to hear the explanation and went to speak to grace. What did you think of Alex telling Dirk off? Should she have waited for Kwanele and Legend to take care of things first?

D you think Kwanele giving Legend a Vit B shot with a horse syringe was good payback for Legend’s behaviour?

What do you make of Dirk reporting to the shareholders and the shareholders attempt at taking over the game reserve?

I think it is excellent news for Alex! Even if her relationship is tough with Legend, I am happy he sees the value she has to offer to Yamihle.

Not to this degree but there are always those people that make situations awkward or tense when they disregard instructions.

100%, I think I would have been so terrified that I would have done anything to ensure I walked away alive!

I think that was part of her old self coming through. I loved that she stood up for Grace but if she is looking at growing and cementing her place at Yamihle, I do think she should have gone straight to Kwanele and Legend instead of interfering herself and putting an even bigger target on her back.

I definitely think so. They seem to be good friends and I feel like this was Kwanele’s way of looking out for his but getting a laugh out of it for himself.

What do you make of Dirk reporting to the shareholders and the shareholders attempt at taking over the game reserve?

I think the family are quite self absorbed so perhaps they do not check in that regularly so when they arent able to get ahold of Jess at first they didnt see it as a big deal.

I am not surprised at all. Roger has been a walking red flag from the beginning. I think Jess will at some stage take Alex’s advice but whether its this time around I dont know.

I still think it is possibly related to bullying or something worse. I think that is why she has created such a harsh outer layer for herself. I think its a protection mechanism.

I truly don’t know. We didnt get much information about all the characters at the beginning of the to think they could be the reason for the bad reviews. Perhaps someone is trying to frame Alex and the timing of the reviews matched with Alex leaving will make it look like she is the one that left the reviews. To be honest, maybe it was Roger lol

I think that it’s an exciting opportunity for Alex and shows that Legend trusts her since there is a degree of danger on a walk vs being in a vehicle. This shows Alex’s growth

Luckily I have not. I understand that he fancies himself to be a youtuber and that his viewers would like to see the lions in that way but he should have taken the advice of the guide as they are the experts

I like to think that I would have but I would have also been petrified 😀

I think that she wants to defend her friends and that’s admirable but Dirk is obviously not a nice person and will hold it against her. She should have told Legend and Kwanele and let them handle it. They have proven that they do address issues with him

This was hilarious. I don’t think it made much of a difference to Legend to be honest. He was too drunk to notice

I feel that this was very underhanded of Dirk but also very in line with how his character was portrayed, a nasty person who has no respect for others that he deems to be less important than himself

I think that they are all used to living their own lives and since Jess makes it seem like she’s okay with they way Roger treats her, that they don’t want to interfere

I think that we all expected it – he’s a horrible person who does not respect her and the way he was using his phone and her reaction to it, made it quite obvious. I think she will when she’s ready to

She was definitely bullied or had some other type of intense trauma in school that has made her withdraw

It feels like they are being review bombed. Maybe someone wants to buy the resort and this is a way of driving down the price? Perhaps I am too suspicious but it seems like Antoinette and Barend work hard to keep the guest happy so this seems strange

I actually liked that Alex was included in the guided walks — it feels like real growth for her, and a sign that Legend and Bandile are starting to respect her skills a bit more. She still has a long way to go, but moments like this help.

Knut? Absolute nightmare. There’s always that one tourist who thinks they know better — zero awareness, maximum chaos. I was stressed reading that scene. Props to Alex for staying calm and following instructions; I don’t know if I’d be as composed with actual lions sizing us up.

As for Alex standing up to Dirk — I loved it. Someone needed to say it, and she didn’t hesitate. That said, it probably would’ve been smarter to let Kwanele and Legend step in first, just to avoid making things worse with management. But I get it — she was done.

The Vitamin B shot with the horse syringe? Petty. Dramatic. Hilarious. Legend deserved it after how he acted, so I’m not even mad.

Dirk running to the shareholders felt like a classic power move from someone losing control. And of course the shareholders want to swoop in — it’s all politics. I’m so glad Marietjie stepped up, though. She really is the MVP.

The Jess situation is heartbreaking. It is strange that the family only started to panic now, but sometimes people don’t want to admit something’s wrong until it’s undeniable. I just hope Jess takes Alex’s advice seriously — she needs to start putting herself first and leaving Roger behind.

The repeated hints that something happened to Alex are getting more and more pointed. My guess? Some kind of trauma, possibly involving someone she trusted. It would explain her walls and her hyper-independence. I’m hoping we get a clearer answer soon.

As for The Plains… something shady is definitely brewing there. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of that storyline at all.

It shows that he trusts Alex and values her as his colleague.

Thankfully I have not experienced this personally. But I have experienced working with colleagues who do not follow the rules which can be frustrating. I most definitely would have followed the rules although I may have wet my pants during the process lol

I was impressed she had the guts to face him considering how she is trying to think first before acting. I think she should have rather reported the situation to higher up instead of getting involved herself.

I thought this was the perfect karma for their friendship.
Dirk continues to reveal his true colours and how conniving he is. He will do almost anything to make it to the top, which is really sad that he has no self respect.

I feel like there is a major disconnect with Alex’s family and that it feels quite superficial at times. I can also see why Alex tries to distance herself as she doesn’t feel like she can be completely honest with them as they don’t seem to care.

I really hope Jess is the bigger person and leaves Roger. Nobody deserves to be treated in the manner she has, he has clearly shown her a lack of respect.

I think Alex experienced some form of bullying which has shaped her into the person she is.

As for the plains, I’m very intrigued to see why there are so many negative reviews all of a sudden.. only time will tell.

I think it great for Alex, a real confidence booster for her.

There is often that one, fortunately I haven’t yet encountered a Knut on a Safari.

I’m not sure how I would react in the situation, I know that on guide walks, the instructions are to be quite and never run. I think I would probably freeze.

I think she should have waited, it’s not her place to check on Dirk, Kwanele and Legend were a bit slow to follow so I know she just wanted to make sure Grace was ok.

Kwanele needed to get Legend to function, I think the horse syringe is great payback.

Dirk is power hungry and seems to have his own agenda, he is not a team player, so its not surprising he would side with the shareholders.

The family all seem to very busy in their own lives, they probably don’t communicate daily, Alex did send a message to her dad to check on Jess and he did follow up and was concerned that he could get in touch with her. Alex and Jess seem to be the closest to one another.
I had a feeling Roger would be having affairs, I don’t think Jess will follow Alex’s advise.

I’m still not sure what happened to Alex just that it was traumatic for her.

It does seem suspicious that The Plains is getting bad reviews, maybe Dirk has a finger in the pie here too against Alex. It just seems strange.

    1. I think this shows that Legend is impressed with Alex (especially after the Lion incident).

    2. Personally I haven’t, especially not in a similar setting. People have respected boundaries!

    3. I’d like to think so but that was such a scary experience! I may have frozen but knowing someone experienced like Legend was around would have comforted me a bit.

    4. I do think Alex should have waited for Kwanele and Legend (she’s not anyone’s boss and also new) but I do admire her ability to stand up to bullies. She was trying to protect someone innocent which was commendable.

    5. Haha that was so funny! It likely was, given the aftermath of that party. But Legends behavior should also be addressed in a more adult way at some point because that also doesn’t seem healthy.

    6. Ugh that just made Dirk seem more slimy to me! He’s a huge tattletale! I also think the Shareholders (at least one of them) seem quite entitled and greedy to just assume that they also need financial compensation when that was not their initial deal.

    7. At first, they may have just put it off to being unable to reach her because they’re just missing each other. Maybe as more calls were missed, things became even more worrisome for them? I also think the family is a bit self absorbed so it may have taken time for them to truly notice.

    8. I think she will, at the very least, consider it! She’s reaching her breaking point when it comes to Roger.

    9. I think it may have been related to bullying. She seems to react quite strongly to any injustice or if someone is overpowering others. I might be inclined to believe it may even have been someone in a position of authority (like a teacher).

    10. That was so interesting! I think someone might be holding a grudge against Alex and potentially ruining places she’s worked at! For some reason, I thought it might be Dirk after the comment her made to her for standing up to Alex!

I loved that Legend is trusting her to accompany him on guided walks.
Yes I have experience tourists that don’t listen. And unfortunately, it happens so often.
I think I would have been able to follow instructions like Alex, we all know that running is the worst thing you can do and it’s always better to listen to a professional with experience.
I don’t think Alex should have waited, Dirk is a bully and professional environment or not, it’s right to stand up for someone.
Kwanele giving Lengend a Vitamin B shot with a horse syringe was hilarious, I loved that it made him grumpy!
Dirk is an absolute sleezebag and I hope he gets fired and ends up regretting his actions.
I’m not sure why no one else in Alex’s family seems to worry about Jess when it’s obvious she is in a very unhappy marriage and Roger is very horrible to her.
I want to believe that Jess will listen to Alex’s advice but you never know with these things.
I still have no idea what could have happened to Alex in high school, it sounded really bad in the first few chapters and I’m hoping that it isn’t.
I don’t know what could be happening with The Plains, I’m not very good at figuring out mysteries. What I do know is that it’s very sad and if someone is deliberately targeting them then that is a horrible thing to do.

Great news for Alex! Maybe Legend is starting to notice how good she is.

Obnoxious people like Knut? Yes, unfortunately since I work in healthcaren I have encountered plenty people like him!

Yes I think I would be able to since my life would depend on it.

I’m proud of Alex telling Dirk off nd standing up for Grace who was too scared to speak for herself.
Perhaps she should have taken the matter straight to Kwanele and Legend to handle, but kudos to her for taking action.

Absolutely. Legend is a poor example of a lodge owner in my opinion and certainly does not carry himself in a professional way that he should.

I think it just shows that Dirk cannot be trusted and he clearly has his own agendas. He is trying to include himself with the shareholders to take the lodge way from Legend.

Their family don’t really pay attention to one another. Her parents seem far too concerned with their careers, more so than their own children.

I’m happy that Jess is coming to her senses and seeing the light. I do hope that she is able to find the courage to take Alex’s advice.

Definitely some kind of trauma or bullying?

The Plains seems to be “under attack” by internet trolls who are trying to taint the reputation of the lodge.

    1. I really like this development—it shows that Alex is being trusted more and being given a chance to prove herself in a very hands-on way. It’s also a smart way to bring her closer to the team, especially with Bandile, and I think it hints at her growing sense of belonging at the reserve.

2.Definitely—there’s always someone who thinks they know better, especially in unfamiliar environments. Knut’s behavior felt so real and frustrating. It’s a reminder of how dangerous it can be when people don’t respect wildlife or listen to the experts.

3.Honestly, I’d hope so, but I think staying calm in a moment like that takes serious guts. Alex following instructions shows her courage and also her ability to trust others, which is something she might be working on throughout the story.

4.Should she have waited for Kwanele and Legend to take care of things first?
I loved that Alex stood up for Grace. It shows her protective instincts and her unwillingness to let people get bullied, especially unfairly. Maybe it wasn’t the most diplomatic move, but it felt authentic to her character. Waiting for Kwanele and Legend might have been “safer,” but I respect that she acted in the moment.

    5. That scene was honestly hilarious. It was a little petty but totally fitting for their dynamic. It lightens up the tension and also shows that Kwanele isn’t afraid to get cheeky with Legend when needed. The friendship vibes are strong here.

6.It feels like a classic power grab, and Dirk seems like the type to stir the pot. The shareholders’ involvement adds a layer of conflict, showing that not everyone cares about the integrity of the reserve—some just want control or profit.

    7. It might say a lot about their family dynamics—maybe they’re used to giving each other space, or they’ve been wrapped up in their own issues. But the timing also suggests something serious is going on, and it pulls Alex out of the “reserve bubble” she’s been in.

    8. Depending on what Roger did, Jess might feel overwhelmed or trapped. I think Alex’s advice will be grounded and protective, but whether Jess listens probably depends on her personality and how much she trusts Alex. It’s clear their bond will be tested here.

9.It feels like Alex is carrying a lot of emotional baggage—maybe from a past relationship, a traumatic experience in the field, or something tied to her family. Whatever it is, it’s probably shaped the way she responds to conflict and why she’s so guarded.

10.I have a feeling The Plains might represent something symbolic—maybe it’s not just land, but the heart of the reserve. It could be facing threats (like the takeover attempt), or it might hold secrets or connections to the characters’ pasts. It definitely seems like it’s going to play a bigger role soon.

I like that Legend is putting more trust in Alex.

Omg, Knut is in almost every group 😅

Lol. I think I probably would have stayed behind Legend, he had a weapon after all. (this is my biggest fear, face to face with a lion) 🤣

I was so proud of Alex for speaking up. I also loved Kwanele was the one to tell her to stop and having Legend speak to Dirk.

Lol, I don’t think that vitamin B shot did anything to Legend.

Oh I was so nervous for Legend, I hope they don’t take the reserve away from him.

I don’t think they took long on purpose. I think it was just life and all it’s elements. I think they care, they all just have a life.

I hope Jess will choose herself. She deserve better.

I think her parents know and probably didn’t handle it best. Alex is probably with everyone. She seems open and vulnerable with Kwanele.

This Plain probably sold or will soon.

    1. It must have been upsetting for Alex because she maybe was hoping to talk a bit more to Kwanele, especially after the night before.
    2. Yes, we were driving in a safari van when someone from America proceeded to video call his daughter and show her around. The guide quickly told him to put his phone away.
    3. I think so but not for long, my anxiety would get the best of me.
    4. Because Alex is still new, I think she should’ve left it. She’s not in a commanding position and now it seems like she’s just throwing her weight around. She should have told her concerns to Kwanele and Legend though.
    5. Possibly.
    6. I knew there was something off about him, but more especially when he started being so chummy with them. I immediately had the feeling that he was in their pocket.
    7. As Alex’s om said before, they don’t really want to interfere, so they probably wanted to wait to see if things ironed out on their own.
    8. I hope she will because there’s a reason why the family doesn’t like him.
    9. I think she was bullied very badly, maybe also had a bad accident.
    10. Worst case scenario, all the staff up and left.

  12. Kirsty (@bookishly_koi) Avatar

I don’t necessarily think this was a promotion or a specific opportunity in terms of progression. It might have just been a way for Legend and the others to assess how well Alex performs during a bushwalk and how she handles those types of high-stress, close-contact-with-nature situations.

Yes. I have actually encountered someone very similar during a game drive at a lodge we visted where people got so drunk during lunch and then completely refused to listen to the rangers. They were so disrespectful that we ended up lodging a formal complaint with the lodge owners, and we were transferred to another vehicle for the rest of our drives during our stay.

I would like to think I could have stayed calm and followed the instructions, but I honestly don’t know. I have been terrified when any of the big 5 came close to our vehicle and that was SAFER than on foot…

I really appreciated that Alex told Dirk off. I do not think she should have waited, and I liked that she stood up for Grace, who was completely innocent in the situation. Dirk has this constant need to prove that he is the best at everything, which makes him come across as arrogant and pompous, so I was glad Alex called him out for not listening.

That shot is going to hurt. Vitamin B injections are painful on their own, never mind when they are delivered with a horse syringe. His bum is definitely going to be sore, and now he also has a headache and can’t sit down.

The whole thing just confirmed what a snake Dirk is. It wasn’t even shocking to find out he was the one feeding information to the shareholders.

I think they can try, but running a game reserve is complicated. They would need far more proof before making any real changes. There would need to be formal investigations, maybe interviews with staff, and legal processes. Considering most of the staff do not like Dirk, I imagine they would side with Legend.

Maybe Jess is not someone who speaks to their parents every day. For some people, going a few days without contact is totally normal. It might not have seemed strange.

Unfortunately, it was not shocking. Roger is an awful person and I do not know if Jess will take Alex’s advice. You can see she is already hesitant to leave, even though she has every reason to. Leaving an emotionally abusive or manipulative relationship is incredibly difficult. I hope she does walk away though because SHE deserves better.

I still do not think we have enough information.

It does feel like there is something bigger going on. I am not sure if it is sabotage, poor management, or someone actively trying to bring them down… Id hope they all saw Alex fired and left and then only had terrible staff so The Plains realises what they are missing with Alex gone and what an impact she made.

    1. It definitely states that Alex has made good progress! Trusting another guide on a guided walk is a big step and I think Legend saw some good qualities in Alex.

    2. Too many times 😭 Growing up, I visited Kruger National Park quite a few times and the behaviour from some tourists was ✨ appalling ✨ When we were at a lion sighting, tourists opened their bus’s door and leaned out to get better pictures…I was horrified lmao. A few even pressed their hooter as they shot through the sighting and upset all the animals greatly 🙁

    3. I’d like to say I would follow the instructions given to me, but facing off a lion has to be so scary. I’m 95% sure I’d stay still since I know the dangers of running and I wouldn’t want to put everyone else at risk. The other 5%? Hai sies, shame, I’d probably be shaking in my boots and prepping for my grave since i’m basically done for 😭

    4. Alex isn’t superior to Dirk so her telling him off is a dangerous move for her since her position at the lodge is already shaky. It’s definitely not the ‘self-growth’ moment I was waiting for, but I understand why she did it. Probably would have been best to take the issue to Legend or Kwanele and let them handle it.

    5. This moment was hilarious lmao 😂 I love that moment since it shows Kwanele and Legend’s friendship a bit more and it’s great fun!

    6. Oh he is SUCH a suck-up omg, someone get him out of here fr 😭 He’s such a dramatic little pest and honestly I wasn’t even surprised he did all of that since those actions are so up his alley. Like, just ew.

    7. The family is so busy with their own lives that I think they ‘forget’ about everyone. Not to mention, they’re kinda obsessed with themselves, so not checking up with Jess wasn’t surprising.

    8. I mean, at this point all of that information is straight facts 💅 Roger is basically the main ick of all the icks on this planet. Since Jess decided to go on a retreat I feel like she might take Alex’s advise. Jess is already noticing a change in Roger and it seems like she doesn’t want to deal with it anymore. Hopefully the retreat brings Jess to the conclusion that Roger is ✨ ew ✨

    9. The fact that Alex’s personality changed so drastically it must have been a terribly tragic moment in her life. I keep thinking of extreme cases, but maybe it was intense bullying that she faced?

    10. One word.

    Dirk.

I mean come on he needs to work on his revenge and secrecy cuz it’s so evident it’s him…Actually disappointed with him. I think he’s just trying to bring The Plains down and ruin their reputation since Alex used to work there and probably has a soft spot for that reserve. Aannd since Alex got fired, Antoinette probably thinks it’s Alex sending all of those bad reviews…
