What are your expectations for the book? Any predictions before starting the book? – I think this is going to be a fun fantasy read which is my favorite genre. Reading the blurb, I am excited to learn about Isla and what her struggles are going to be.
During Chapter One, we are introduced to Isla’s guardians. What do you think of Poppy and Terra? Poppy seems like the mother figures she always wanted and Terra the warrior father figure. I like that they keep Isla safe and teach her to be a strong leader.

Do you think this sets the book up to be action-filled? I think being the leader of the Wildlings and knowing that the centennial is coming up they know she needs to be ready for everything.
Isla had always longed for more, “more experiences, more places, more people”. Can you relate to this? – Most definitely. She referred to her staying in her room most of her life and being a leader and having to be content with that decision made by others, clearly will make anyone want to see the world and other realms.
We are told the story of the Eldress and the story of her passing. Why do you think Isla blames herself for the death of the Eldress?
We learn that all six realms have been cursed in uniquely wicked ways. What do you think of the Wildling curse and the consequence of the curse? – This is absolutely terrible. Not being able to love is one of the hardest things to never experience.
Why do you think Isla lied to her guardians? – All kids lie to their “parents” and this is how I see Poppy and Terra. They don’t allow her to go outside much, and I think it is a normal response to someone doing something they know they aren’t allowed to do.
What do you think of our introduction to Grim? Do you think he knows Isla? – I love myself a gray MMC. I immediately like him from the start. The way he interacted with her did come across like they have seen or met each other.
Based on what we have learned so far about the Centennial and the stakes associated with it, would you partake? I just love trials and tribulations. I think being in Isla shoes knowing someone has to die makes the decision harder but I would want to try.
Throughout Chapter Two, we meet the other rulers. Another new ruler is Celeste. What do you think of everyone we have been introduced to? I liked Celeste. I am glad that she had a friend. I am not a fan of Cleo at all. I think she is rude. Oro seems strange. Why would he save her when he knows someone has to die.
Why do you think no Wildlings stayed behind on the island? I am honestly not sure as to why yet. Maybe they thought that their curse would be better suited not being on the island.
We are told early on that the integrity of the island is wholly dependent on the king of Lightlark. What sort of weight do you think this responsibility carries? – This should be a huge amount of responsibility to bear. To know that everything is dependent on you is quite a lot.
Why do you think the king commands that the fires are to remain burning constantly? He is a sunling so I would assume this keeps his power high.
Did you expect Celeste and Isla to be friends? Most definitely. The way they interact shows a mutual respect and I think Celeste as helped her a lot with not being so alone.
Why do you think the starstick was amongst Isla’s mother’s things? I think her mom probably had a friend within the starlings that gave it to her. Do you think Celeste is right in saying that it is a Starling relic? They do have the power of all metals so this wouldn’t surprise me.
What do you think of the king saving Isla? Why do you think he did it? This is very strange but if he did save her I feel there is more to the curses then what is told.
Why do you think Grim stood up for Isla and requested that the heart be sent to her room? He is able to feel her feelings so I think he picked up on the fact that she feels uncomfortable and with them knowing that they will be partnered up, maybe he felt like if he did this she would trust him.
What do you think of Isla being born without power? Did you suspect it? This was very strange at first. This makes me wonder why she doesn’t have power but I do feel it will flare up.
Do you think Isla will be able to keep her lack of powers hidden? How many tricks do you think she has up her sleeves? Well Terra taught her well and I think she suspected that she would need to teach her ways to help her conceal this. It will be very interesting to see how and for how long.
Based on what Isla tells us in Chapter Five about the Nightshade, do you think they spun the curse? This is the easiest answer to the question they all have BUT why would he partake if they were the ones that spun the curse.
Isla mentions a flair. What do you think Grim’s flair could be? I am not sure but I think it might be something to do with people and their emotions.
Isla’s favourite treat is clearly chocolate. What is your favourite treat? Ohhhh I am a sugar person through and through so most definitely the sweeter the better. Ice cream and chocolate is up there.
Why do you think Grim helps Isla and warns her about what she needs? As mentioned earlier, I think he needs a partner and I think he decided she might be the one to help him.

From the first chapter, I’ve got high expectations. I’m hooked, and there’s so many places this story could go if done correctly!
Poppy and Terra seem loyal, they care well for Isla.
Yess, and that excites me! I think we’ll see some really good fight scenes.
Yes I can, I grew up super lonely and always felt like I was missing out on things. Now that I’m an adult I’m trying so many new experiences and living life to the fullest.
Maybe the Eldress was discovered because Isla was caught going to see her.
The wildling curse is so intense, and I think it’ll make for a really good romance subplot later on.
They would’ve tried to stop her had they known the truth.
Grim either knows Isla or can read her mind and he lied about it, he knows more than he lets on.

1. I expect all the drama and some complex romance storylines. No predictions as I want to be wowed.
2. I really like Poppy and Terra. They definitely possess the typical parental dualities in their own way.
3. This gives me a clear indication that this is about to be a badass main character and I love it. It also lets me know that Isla is skilled and not the typical damsel in distress.
4. More places and experiences, yes. The world is a magical and great place already. It would be a shame to be stuck in a ‘box’ and not wanting to experience the fullness of it all.
5. The guilt of being the reason for someone’s weakness or downfall. As a realm, they also place a lot of pressure on themselves for the greater good of others.
6. I think the Wildling and Starling curses are the worst of all.
7. She wants to make her own destiny and not simply be a cog in the machine.
8. He has probably heard of Isla as the others are fairly familiar with each other. I love his bad boy, dark persona. It adds mystery and thickens the plot.
9. If I had super cool powers to accompany my, yeah, sure. Do it for the plot.
10. I don’t like Cleo’s attitude but you must always get a bully persona in these stories. Even in a fantastical world! I like Celeste. I’m unsure about Azul and I lowkey like Grim. I’m suspicious of Oro.
11. I think Wildlings are carefree so they probably didn’t care as much. They would seem more rebellious and work against the norm or expected behaviours.
12. Way too much pressure since everyone is looking at the king with the expectation of great power and authority. Even though the king is not immune to the curses, being a king of Lightlark means upholding tradition and order against all odds. It’s a strange dynamic to make sense of when reading but the world building is slowly making more sense as the chapters go on.
13. I am not sure. Very sus. But I suspect it could be a display of power and knowing Sunlings control fire, it’s probably about power as well. Although, I suspect it is more than this.
14. Not at all. I love Celeste and Isla’s friendship. It’s refreshing.
15. It’s giving thief, but perhaps she also had a Starling friend or a history with being in that realm. Perhaps a gift from a previous love interest? I think Celeste is right in saying that it is a Starling relic

1. Due to the hype surrounding Lightlark, I have a few expectations 🙈 I love a good fantasy novel and from what I have heard, I hold hope that Alex Aster’s writing and world-building will be what everyone raves about 🖤
2. The brief interactions with Terra and Poppy left me quite intrigued. The way they guard Isla shows how caring they are. While it is for the best since Isla doesn’t have power, I do wonder if their protection has harmful implications…
3. I love a FMC that has aura 😂 The blades cast a cunning shadow over Isla and it makes me excited to see her skills later on in the book! With the mention of Isla wielding these weapons, I believe that action will be a wild show in Lightlark.
4. Isla’s yearning for a more exciting life is definitely relatable, especially as a reader. This world, real and fictional, has a lot to offer. There’s a longing to be part of experiences that could make us feel more alive than we already do 🖤
5. Perhaps Isla’s mere presence was a source of trouble in the first place, hence bringing the Eldress into an unknown crossfire. It seems that there are watchful eyes within Isla’s world, especially if her secret has started whispering…
6. The Wildling curse is the true definition of “love kills us all”. I find it quite symbolic that Wildings eat hearts and are demanded to kill those who allow love to fester. Wildlings eat the organ that is the main ‘object’ used to describe love. It is a unique curse.
Consume the very thing you are never allowed to have…7. Isla lying to her guardians brings life to what I said in question two…The fact that she is so prepared to go against Terra and Poppy creates this idea that perhaps we, readers, haven’t seen the truth just yet. I also believe that while Isla was out and about, experiencing the different lands, she may have come across some truths that inspired her to go against the orders given to her.
8. Grim seems to be familiar with Isla in a manner that suggests something happened beforehand. Grim seems to be giving ‘shadow-daddy’ vibes LOL 😂 and I am totally here for that. With him being involved with the matters of the mind, perhaps he has the power to take memory? Maybe that is why Isla cannot remember him?
9. I would partake in the Centennial to save my realm, for sure! Will I survive the Centennial? Probably not. One day of seeing people use their powers against me, I would call it and say “good game, it was fun” while I make my way off the island and down the cliff.
10. Cleo is an absolute snake, but I do wonder if she will become a key character/player once the battle begins. Azul’s introduction was straightforward, however something about him has my suspicions running wild. Grim is an absolute BAE, simple as that. Celeste seems like a girl’s girl, but again, I do not know if she is trustworthy as of yet. It’s always the closest ones that have the opportunity to stab you in the back 👀🙈
11. Perhaps the hatred they faced from all the other realms wasn’t a reality they wanted to face every day? There are many secrets that hinder true perception in Lightlark, so maybe that reason will come to light sooner rather than later.
12. If I were told that an entire island is dependent on my entire existence I would be the one to lock myself away 😭 That in itself is a curse for Oro, I believe. The fact that one cannot trust again or to even live a life with a community is quite isolating. The loneliness that must stem from that reality must be a path to madness, in my opinion.
13. I have an inkling that there is some sort of issue with the power of the Island. Perhaps Oro’s power is fading? Suspicions aside, he is a Sunling and that is where his power stems from.
14. Not at all! That was a super sneaky addition to Isla’s arrival on the island. I found that to be an insight of how sly both Celeste and Isla can be when the time calls for it.
15. As I said before, the truth is hidden behind a thick wall of secrets…Isla’s mother could have been involved with the Starling realm, in one way or another. I think Isla’s mother probably used it to travel, as well, but for far more sinister and serious matters.
16. My immediate thought was, “oh, another love interest?” LOL, I have no idea if that is even a possibility, though. Oro’s interest in Isla could be stemming from a promise he made a while ago or because he has a plan that involves Isla.
17. I have a feeling that he knows about Isla’s power status and the fact that she does not live under the Wildling curse. Isla’s feelings could have been quite powerful, though, and Grim became aware of it. C
18. I did not expect that. She was set up 😭 But there’s probably a reason for it and things are not as they seem in this world.
19. I believe she could keep it hidden to a certain degree. However, once real battle begins, those who fight her will see through her tricks. Since Isla’s been trained and kept hidden for so long, the plans she has to stay hidden are probably quite developed and impressive. I wonder if it will be enough, though.
20. It seems to be too simple, in my opinion. It makes sense if they did, but I have a feeling that there’s more to it than Isla suspects.
21. Well he mentioned he cannot use it on her so I wonder if it something completely different than his set abilities. Perhaps it is a flair that cannot be used on Isla herself, but on others.

1) I am just hoping it lives up to the hype!
2) I think they’re a good complement to Isla and what she needs as the ruler of the Wildlings. Especially Terra, teaching her how to fight and defend herself. I also think they are the closest she has to family.
3) This at least shows us that Isla will be putting those skills to use – either to defend herself or whoever she’s paired with in the trials.
4) Definitely when I was younger – the world is so big, we should explore it!
5) It could be because she is powerless and was not able to sustain the power of her lands – or maybe Eldress died saving Isla.
6) Interesting curse! I guess it’s because of what she said that Wildlings are beautiful and have almost a siren-like quality, so this curse then hinders them from using their charms. I do think this sets us up for an interesting romance plot…

A good start if a bit repetitive, at times this was helpful-also referring back to the curses and powers page numerous times as the characters were introduced -I suspect this will become more memorable as the read continues. I enjoyed the world establishment and the initial character meetings. Not sure I trust Terra and Poppy at this point but curious to see how the plots between then and Isla and Isla and Celeste’s plots differ. I knew going in that Grim is a MMC and I’m enjoying his interactions with Isla at the Agora – eager for more on their development. A bit frustrated that Isla’s curse is to not have powers, I was looking forward to her wielding them. Overall a wonderful fist 5 chapters, looking forward to the next 5.

I’m expecting high-stakes fantasy, lots of tension, morally grey characters, and a competition where nothing is as simple as it seems. Each ruler feels dangerous in their own way, which makes the Centennial even more unsettling. Celeste, in particular, surprised me and she feels sharp, clever, and not as cold as I expected. I think Wildlings don’t trust neutral ground or anyone else. I think Isla’s mother knew far more than Isla ever realised. The fact that it was hidden suggests intention. I do think Celeste could be right and it feels too important to be random.16. “What do you think of the king saving Isla? Why do you think he did it?”
The king saving Isla felt deliberate, not instinctive. I think he sees something in her and either a threat, a key, or someone who could change the outcome of the Centennial.17. “Why do you think Grim stood up for Isla and requested that the heart be sent to her room?”
Grim standing up for Isla felt protective and personal. I think he’s already chosen a side, and that side involves Isla surviving—possibly for reasons tied to the curse or the past.18. “What do you think of Isla being born without power? Did you suspect it?”
I suspected something was off, but the reveal still hit hard. It flips the chosen-one trope in such an interesting way and makes Isla’s strength feel earned rather than inherited.19. “Do you think Isla will be able to keep her lack of powers hidden? How many tricks do you think she has up her sleeves?”
I don’t think she’ll be able to hide it forever, but I do think she’s smarter and more resourceful than people expect. Between training, strategy, and deception, she definitely has a few tricks ready.20. “Based on what Isla tells us in Chapter Five about the Nightshade, do you think they spun the curse?”
I think it’s very possible. The Nightshade feel too calculating and powerful to be innocent, and the curse feels like something born from intention rather than accident.21. “Isla mentions a flair. What do you think Grim’s flair could be?”
I think Grim’s flair has something to do with shadows, death, or emotional manipulation. Whatever it is, it feels subtle but terrifying and like power you don’t notice until it’s too late.22. “Isla’s favourite treat is clearly chocolate. What is your favourite treat?”
My favourite treat is also chocolate especially chocolate with caramel or anything chocolate-based with a little crunch.23. “Why do you think Grim helps Isla and warns her about what she needs?”
I think Grim helps Isla because her survival is tied to his own in some way and emotionally, magically, or strategically. It doesn’t feel like kindness alone; it feels like fate, guilt, or a shared secret pulling him toward her. -
🥀I expect Lightlark to be filled with a bit of action and drama. The premise of breaking a curse that’s hundreds of years old, with rulers that have abilities, can only mean intense infighting and scheming. *kicks feet*
🥀I think Poppy and Terra are so contrasted and so opposite that it makes it quite interesting to see how they have influenced Isla’s life. It’s like her guardians are trying to hold the stereotypical role of “mom” and “dad” without the same depth of connection.
🥀I think mention of Isla’s training, and the blades she’s earned show us early on that she’s been trained to be a warrior, so I think action is definitely to be expected. It’s giving Chekhov’s Gun.
🥀I can absolutely relate to Isla wanting more, and wanting more experiences. We could substitute Isla’s living conditions and being a caged bird with having really strict parents who micro-manage your every move and then it becomes deeply relatable and understandable.
🥀I think Isla carries far too much guilt for a lot of things and I think her being powerless is the root of that insecurity.
🥀The Wildling curse feels very harsh in comparison to the others – eating hearts and killing anyone they fall in love with? Hectic. It’s priming them to be isolated and painted as monsters because they literally survive off of human hearts. It feels very spiteful for them to have two curses when everyone else only has one.
🥀Lying to your ‘parents’ as a young person is the most relatable thing Isla could do. It is because she knew they wouldn’t approve, they would try to keep her more trapped or they would control what little of her life she had to herself.
🥀I think there is definitely a familiarity and an intimacy to their interactions. Everyone loves a morally grey MMC, though.
🥀I think if I was a ruler, and my people depended on breaking these curses for survival, there isn’t a question about whether or not you would. I think that kind of responsibility weighs on you.
🥀I think Alex Aster has introduced us to the characters in the way she wants us to meet them. I think Grim’s over familiarity, Celeste’s friendship, Oro’s distance, and Cleo’s coldness are all there to serve the bigger story that unfolds.
🥀I think with their curse, they would have been vulnerable to the other realms deciding to kill them off out of fear. They were labelled monsters, and it’s often better to not try to convince people otherwise.

Before starting, I expected a strong fantasy with detailed world building, dangerous magic, and high stakes. I also predicted that the story would slowly reveal secrets about Isla and her past, and that nothing about Lightlark would be as simple as it first appears.
They’re loyal and protective, but also suffocating. I get why Isla feels trapped,love and control feel a little too close here.
That moment felt intentional. The blades aren’t just decoration they’re proof Isla was trained for violence even if she wasn’t meant to leave.
Yes that feeling of knowing there’s a bigger world out there and feeling like you’re watching it from behind glass is very real.
Isla seems like someone who carries responsibility even when it isn’t hers. Guilt feels like second nature to her.
It’s brutal because it erases home, not just people. Being forced to leave feels worse than dying in one place
Because honesty has never really worked in her favour. Lying is the only way she gets choice.

Lightlark has been on my TBR since release day. I have no idea what it’s about or what I’m in for but I’m excited!
I can’t say much about either of them as yet. It’s too early. But they seem to be very controlling. I can’t pinpoint it, but the vibe is a bit “off”.
She’s obviously had to be trained for whatever lies ahead. Earning weapons is an interesting choice. I do think this gives us an idea of some sort of trial or battle ahead. So yes to action.
Yes. I long to travel more. I love meeting new people and seeing new places.
It could have something to do with Isla not having powers, or the “travels” she likes to go on. Maybe she got caught or something went wrong.
I think it’s really sad and must be lonely, to not be able to love? I can’t even imagine!
I think there’s a lack of trust there. I think the guardians are also a bit controlling and Isla seems to be headstrong in a way that she knows what she needs to do, but she’s going to do it her way.
It was a strange encounter, something’s going on there… possible love interest?
If I didn’t have to, then no. Definitely not. But if a lot of lives depended on me doing it, probably. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself otherwise.
I don’t think anyone should be trusted but I’m glad Isla has a friend and I hope they stay friends and that whatever plan they have concocted, actually works.
I think they’re judged because of the heart and love thing, the way they dress, etc. They just wanted to live in peace.

Oh hectic, I did not realise that we were meant to actually type out the answers to the questions. I thought it was just a deeper reading/thought provoking exercise. Oh! Okay! Lemme answer here…
1. I have very low expectations for this book. It’s a BookTok book and I’ve been sorely disappointed by BookTok recs before.
2. I don’t like them! Why are they keeping her so locked up that she isn’t even allowed to go into some of the rooms. Especially after I realised that she was the Queen/Ruler. You’re telling me THEY live in YOUR castle and yet you cannot go into certain places? Oh no! That’s wild!
3. I don’t like how she had to *earn the weapons. Especially considering it is HERS! But yeah I do think whenever we have people who are well trained in Fantasy books, there is a lot of action!
4. YES! More BOOKS and more TIME to READ them. That’s about as far as I can relate. But I think that has more to do with the fact that I have the freedom to come and go as I please and she does not.
5. Because as the Ruler, it is her job to break the curses and ensure that her people find the sustainance of Lightlark, which cannot be provided on the islands. Also because her guardians have basically put all of the responsibilities solely on her shoulders and made her feel like a failure for not doing *more to save her realm or not wanting it enough.
6. Eating hearts doesn’t seem like much of a curse if it is contained to their society but I can see why the others would shun them because of it. The fact that they are destined to kill the ones they love is kind of cruel because that means that they need to evolve into a heartless society to survive and they will only procreate to keep their species alive and not for the joy of it.
7. Because they’re controlling freaks and she is about to get her first real taste of freedom.
8. I love it! I think he’s cute!! I hope that they end up together. I think he’s very Rhysand coded in that he is portrayed as the dark knight but he’s actually a real sweetie pie!
9. No! I like my life, thank you very much! I will watch in the stands as a spectatre with my popcorn but my people would suffer if I was their Ruler because I am not about to risk my life for ungrateful subjects who will never be happy! No thanks!
10. She did not stand out much in the introduction. She seemed very background/weakling type that often gets overlooked.
11. Because the rest of the people shunned them. I think the others saw them as monsters and treated them as such and so to protect themselves and everyone else they went their separate ways and just lived their lives on their own terms.
12. That’s rough for that king. He was born with the weight of the world on his shoulders then but it also forces equality in that he cannot favor one faction over another. Not even his own.
13. Because he cannot feel the heat of the sun so he’s finding the closest alternative that he can control. Also, I think it burns off some of his power (again think Rhys where he needs to use his power often to take the edge off so that it doesn’t eat him up instead).
14. No! I actually thought that she was friends with Cleo and they were trying to hide it by being mean to each other.
15. Maybe her father was a Starling and her mother ended up keeping it as a souvenier of the man she loved. Yes I do think the Celeste will be able to correctly identify the power source if it comes from her realm.
16. I think that he might know her or her mother and there’s some sort of blood debt that needs to be repaid so he is keeping her safe from a distance without getting too close to her. That’s also why he acts so cold towards her at the dinner.
17. Because he’s a nice guy and he doesn’t want anyone to be uncomfortable. Also I think he suspects that she can’t actually stomach it.
18. I did not suspect that at all! I thought she just couldn’t control her power and that’s why she was so dangerous to everyone. Like being born with too much power and no control to keep it from hurting someone. It’s definitely an interesting dynamic that she is not powerful but participating in a competition meant to showcase her power!
19. Yes, I think that was drilled into her more than any other form of training. I think she will probaby die trying to hide her secret but as with all secrets, it must out!
20. No. I think that they know who did it but because they too were affected, I think they are just innocent bystanders in all of this and people need someone to villainise and blame.
21. I think he might have the ability to wipe out light and that’s why Oro is so afraid of him. He could snuff out the king’s power without lifting a finger.

23. Because he likes her spark? Or maybe they’re fated mates and she just hasn’t realised it yet!
