Onyx Storm Day One

Artwork by Leah Croft (@cuddlydevil1114)

Securing Basgiath and the wards has come at great cost, including General Sorrengail’s life. Strategy must adjust. It is in the realm’s best interest to ally with Poromiel, even temporarily. – Onyx Storm page 1

While those at Basgiath have won the battle against the venin. Something more tragic has happened. At the end of Iron Flame we learn that  Xaden has channeled from the earth and has become the very thing that they were fighting against.

What do you think of Xaden’s decision to save Violet by becoming the very thing they fear?

The prologue reveals a lot of information regarding Andarna and Xaden’s mental state. Andarna believes she and her family could be the cure to the venin much like she was the solution to creating the wards. Do you think she could help save Xaden?

Xaden has clearly now met with Jack twice. Once at the end of Iron Flame and now again attempting to find a cure. Do you think Xaden will lose control?

Did anyone else miss sassy Andarna? She seems to be back in full force from the get go!

Do you think the Navarrians will broker peace with the Poromish?

At the start of Chapter Two we get an excerpt from A Study on Signets by Major Dalton Sisneros. Do you think this is foreshadowing for what is to come?

Why do you think the venin decided to try and save Barlowe instead of going after the wardstone?

Xaden can sense the dark wielders. How do you think this will change the game? Do you think it will benefit the riders or do you think it will impede them in the long run.

Mira has returned from her mission to Aretia. With her she brings hope that the fliers can stay at Basgiath and within the wards. She also brings with her the news that the wards are failing. What do you make of this? Do you think an alliance will be forged? Do you think Andarna will find her den before the wards fail?

In Chapter Five we finally get to experience the unrest within Basgiath first hand. What do you make of Aura challenging the fliers and ultimately Dain. What do you think of her statements where she reiterates that they left. Do you think this challenge comes from a place of hurt? And last, Violet stands up to take the challenge. Do you think she will win?

I am so excited to be able to finally read this book! And it’s absolutely living up to my expectations.

I think Xaden will forever put Violet first no matter the consequences and I can totally accept that as he is morally grey in the best way.

I think Andarna’s species could hold the answer to a number of things, my worry is if they will even find them and if they would even help.
I missed Andarna so much! I love her banter and attitude, forever having me giggling.

I think extenuating circumstances might cause him to turn venin but I don’t think he will do it without being fully conscious of his actions.

I think Rebecca is great with her foreshadowing, I can’t wait to see what comes of all of it.

I think they tried to save Barlowe because he has to be valuable to them, and I feel like even though they are venin they are still going to show some loyalty to their ‘family’.
I think Xaden sensing them will definitely be advantageous so that they can try prevent any sort of attacks from occurring.

I really hope she does but in true Rebecca fashion the wards may fall before they can find any sort of hope or alliance. Only time will tell.

I think there is a lot of uncertainty amongst the fliers and riders and this challenge of power was bound to happen at some point. Violet is the strongest besides Xaden with regards to her signet, so I believe she would definitely own that challenge.

Question:What do you think of Xaden’s decision to save Violet but become the very thing they fear?
Answer: I think it’s admirable relationship wise because it shows he cares about her deeply and has loyalty for her.

Question: Do you think she could help save Xaden?
Answer: Due to Andarna being able to create wards and counteract the venin. I think she could help save him BUT it depends if she does so in time and how far gone Xaden is.

Question: Did anyone else miss sassy Andarna?
Answer: I absolutely did. She brings the story to life and makes me giggle. She’s adorable.

Question: Do you think the Navarrians will broker peace with the Poromish?
Answer: I feel it’ll be challenging because of mistrust which could lead to not having peace and working together properly.

Question: Do you think this is foreshadowing for what is to come?
Answer: It’s a possibility, so yes

Question: Why do you think the venin decided to try and save Barlowe instead of going after the wardstone?
Answer: It could involve using him to gain access to the wardstone or be interested in his unique abilities.

Question:Xaden can sense the dark wielders. How do you think this will change the game? Do you think it will benefit the riders or do you think it will impede them in the long run.
Answer: It could benefit them by being able to track the dark wielders to plan targeted missions.

Question: What do you make of this? Do you think an alliance will be forged? Do you think Andarna will find her den before the wards fail?
Answer: Bringing the fliers could provide a safe haven and support in the fight against dark forces.
I do think an alliance between the fliers and Aretia could be formed.
The news of the wards falling raises the stakes. I really hope she finds her den before that.

Question: What do you make of Aura challenging the fliers and ultimately Dain. What do you think of her statements where she reiterates that they left. Do you think this challenge comes from a place of hurt? And last, Violet stands up to take the challenge. Do you think she will win?
Answer: I think Aura feels hurt and betrayed. She probably feels they left to prioritize their own well-being and left Basgiath to fend for themselves.
I do think Violet will win.

So excited about this book! I hope it’s as action-packed as Iron Flame.

I must say, I was shocked that Xaden decided to do what he did, considering how hard they have been fighting to destroy the venin. I understand it was to save Basgiath and give them a fighting chance – but it’s sad. I hope there’s a cure.

I don’t know if they’re the answer to save Xaden – they must have left for a reason right? But we can only hope that somehow she and her family/den can. But then why was she left behind? Did they forget her?

I think if Xaden draws from the earth again he might start to lose control. Didn’t Jack say something about wanting more power? So maybe that’s a reason.

I’m obsessed with Andarna – she’s a sassy adolescent and we love to see it.

I think they will come to some sort of agreement with the Poromish, but I’m sure it will only be under very specific and strict terms.

Everything in this book is a foreshadowing so I’m sure it is!! Are we going to see more signets?

I’m not sure why they tried to save him? Maybe they sense him weakening and think he’s going to give them [Basgiath] information about the venin/Sages/etc.

Before I started answering these questions I felt like I needed to reread these chapters, but anyway here is my thoughts.

Xaden will do anything for the people he loves and cares about so it wasn’t surprising for me that Xaden channelled from the earth in order to save Violet.

I genuinely think Andarna is a solution to a lot of problems and her kind can definitely help with the fight against the venin BUT I don’t think her or her kind would bring about a cure for Xaden, although this doesn’t mean that I don’t think Xaden can be cured, he can probably just be cured another way. I always enjoy sassy Andarna and glad she hasn’t changed much in Onyx Storm.

Xaden I do believe will lose control, it will start off slowly but he will realise that he has lost control and try change but inevitably he won’t be able to.

I think that the Navarrians will eventually manage to broker peace with the Poromish, but I do feel there is still going to be a lot of negotiations, mistrust and the Poromish requesting something big in return.

Rebecca Yarros always does an excellent job of foreshadowing, so I do think the extract from the study of signets eludes to a lot of what is to still come in the story.

I think Jack is more valuable to the venin than the wardstone because he provides key information about Basgaith, war strategies and he knows the other riders weaknesses.

Xaden being able to sense the dark wielders will at first be advantageous to our riders but in true Rebecca Yarros fashion I think he will betray the riders unknowingly and therefore definitely impede the riders in the long run.

I really do hope a good alliance is formed between Aretia and the fliers as think they could make quite an unstoppable team together and have a greater chance of winning this battle. With the wards failing I really do hope Andarna finds her family and where she is from, but I can only hope this happens.

I do understand Aura feeling upset about the riders “abandoning” Basgaith because they didn’t exactly go into detail about why they left and probably felt that they weren’t wanting to save Basgiath. These arguements were bound to happen. I do think Violet will win as her signet is extremely strong and as readers we have learnt to not underestimate the small but fiesty Violet.

I’m so excited to join this read-along…

Q: What do you think of Xaden’s decision to save Violet by becoming the very thing they fear?
A: I think that he felt helpless when he felt Violet being close to burnout to imbue the ward stone and he knew that this was the only way for them to win a battle, but his decision ultimately came from the fact that he loves her and will condemn his soul to make sure that she survives, I don’t agree with it but I can understand where he’s coming from

Q: Do you think she could help save Xaden?
A: Andarna could help as we do not know all the facts of her den yet.

Q: Do you think Xaden will lose control?
A: I don’t think he will lose full control of himself but will draw from the source to save the people he loves

Q: Did anyone else miss sassy Andarna?
A: I love sassy Andarna, she will forever be one of my favourite characters

Q: Do you think the Navarrians will broker peace with the Poromish?
A: No, because I don’t think the Santerium will want to lose their sense of power

Q: Do you think this is foreshadowing for what is to come?
A: Oh definitely, and it could also be linked to the 3 brother story that is told in Iron Flame and Fourth Wing

Q: Why do you think the venin decided to try and save Barlowe instead of going after the wardstone?
A: Perhaps the ward stone is now more heavily guarded and maybe Barlowe had information that the Venin doesn’t want any one else to know

Q: How do you think this will change the game? Do you think it will benefit the riders or do you think it will impede them in the long run.
A: I think this will give them a massive advantage to know if venin are in areas but this could also be a 2-way street where the venin can sense Xaden as well and generally where he goes Violet goes

My heart shattered when I read that Xaden turned venin…even though it is admirable that he did anything possible to save the one he loves.

I do believe that the secrets behind Andarna and where she comes from could hold the answers to helping Xaden. Please please please!

Xaden seems very committed to keeping himself in check and not losing control, but I fear that he might just crack under certain situations where he is pushed beyond limits.

Andarna and her sass is just the best thing ever! It provides some much-needed laughter in this story – especially when she tells Tairn off!

I think it is going to be a very difficult agreement, IF the two sides even manage it.

Knowing all the hidden nuggets throughout this series so far, I’d say yes!

They probably prioritised saving Jack first because he is one of their kind.
I feel that Jack might also be a leader figure amongst the venin so their loyalty was first and foremost to save him, before doing anything with the wardstone.

Xaden sensing the wielders is definitely an advantage.

It is very unsettling that the wards are falling. Also, the tension and fighting between the riders and fliers doesn’t bode well either.. I hope they all manage to realise they all want the same thing in the end and manage to band together.

I was really shocked by Aura and her actions as she was provoking all the bad feelings and influencing the other riders.
She might indeed feel hurt and betrayed, but this certainly isn’t the behaviour of a leader.

Firstly, it’s such an amazing feeling to finally be reading Onyx Storm and getting answers to questions, or hopefully answers.

I think that Xaden will give anything and everything for Violet without thinking twice, so his choice to save Violet is proof of his commitment and love to her once again.

I have no idea if Andarna could save Xaden, but I hope she can without it costing her life.

I think that Xaden might lose control, it’s something to be expected since it’s like an inner battle between himself and the dark side.
Andarna and her sass is definitely a welcome reprieve and I missed her.

The situation between the Navarrians and Poromish leaves me uncertain. In my opinion there’s still so much left that needs to be sorted out, but as I hope that they get to make peace.

The excerpt at Chapter two is definitely included for a reason, so it might hint towards something.c
I think them going after Barlowe is a strategic move and less obvious. Like being unpredictable.

I think Xaden being able to sense the dark wielders is a definite benefit for the riders.
I feel that with Mira’s return, everything is in such a rush and so much still needs to be done. Time is of the essence. I really hope Andarna will find her den, but something tells me something is going to happen.

I think Aura’s challenge came from a place of hurt and perhaps betrayal. She felt like they were there to fight and the others just left.
With Violet, anything is always possible.

I think Xaden is really thinking about Violet and I’m here for it, he will do whatever he has to do to save her and protect her and vice versa, he will definitely sacrifice the world to save the her, even if it means he becomes that fully.

Andarna can definitely or probably save Xaden I’m not sure yet

I hope he doesn’t turn full Vernin and they find a cure for him, I’m taking my time reading this book cause work has been tough but I’m ABSOLUTELY LOVING IT
so much stuff is happening, it’s action packed from the get go

Andarna being sassy I’m here for it 😂

They might broker peace but their is a lot of mistrust so we’ll see what happens there

Yes, I love foreshadowing, it makes for a compelling story

Maybe Barlowe is valuable to them

Xaden sensing dark wielders will definitely help in the long run if they are probably ambushed by Vernin

I hope Andarna finds what she’s been looking for and the alliance I’m not so sure anything can happen

Obviously Violet will win any challenge thrown her way she is fierce FMC and it was probably from a place of hurt when Aura challenged Dain

    • Xaden Riorson out here being iconic as a book boyfriend. He truly loves Violet and proved he’d sacrifice himself in a heartbeat in order to protect her.

    • I think there’s a lot Andarna and her kind could do.

    • Perhaps at the climax of the book

    • I love sassy Andarna

    • I think it’ll be a process…

    • Everything and anything in these books all mean something

    • Maybe Barlowe holds some sort of importance to their mission.

    • It can benefit the riders in order to be aware and prepared.

    • We can only hope Andarna can find her own kind soon

    • Aura is just looking to start trouble and assert dominance. She seems like she has a sense of superiority regarding herself since she stayed behind and didnt join the riot she assumes her choice was the right one.

  9. Monique Avatar

Xaden will forever put Violet first, there’s no doubt about it. It shows the true depths of his love for her and just how far he would reach to ensure her safety.

I think there is a lot to come in regards to Andarna and her species, we only know so much about her and I am extremely curious to learn more. I think she could be the answer to the cure or at the very least I believe her species would know of a solution.

I think so, though there is still so much unknown that honestly anything could happen.

    I am obsessed with Andarna!!

I think there is a possibility for sure. Rebecca knows what’s she is doing, that’s for sure!

I definitely think so, I doubt it would be information that would be given to us for no reason.

I think Barlowe might play a crucial role for them. There must be some value that he adds to the venin, that’s the only readon why I think they did what they did.

I think Xaden being able to sense the dark wielders will play in everyone’s favour!

I honestly hope that’s the case, I’m already stressing for whats to come!!

Xaden choice was made out of love, he wasn’t given much choice, he was losing the battle.
I think Andarna will do whatever she can to help Violet save Xaden.
the need to channel is like a drug addiction, so IF Xaden feels he or Vilet are on the losing end, he will lose control and channel.
Sassy Andarna is just the best.
    Yes I think they will.
Study of signet – is foreshadowing of what to come.
The Venin have a purpose for Jack Barlow – just not sure what it is.
Xaden sensing the dark wielders I think will benefit the riders, as the element of surprise will no longer be of benefit to them.
In Iron flame they said the wards in Aretia will fail. We have to hope that Andarna finds her den before the ward fail.
I think the challenge Comes of Aura trying to show that they still are capable without the fliers. I love the strenght Violet is showing now. I think she will win.
