1. I think the story is happening in a kind of dual timeline. As we read about Clarissa and Dolf, we are also following Kassie and Rooi as they conduct their investigation. At the same time, we learn more about Monica and Arend. So, it feels like everything is unfolding within the same time frame.
2. I now understand what evidence Moerdyk had, but originally I thought it would be pictures of a certain nature that implicated people.
3. I think this is where everything begins to fall apart for her. The events that follow make it clear that this moment was the calm before the storm.
4. Yes and no. I get paid very differently from most South Africans, but I know many people share strong feelings about December pay. Some love it because they receive a bonus, while others dislike it because their bonus comes in November, leaving them with very little money to last until their next pay.
5. I really like Kassie and Rooi, and I prefer them to Arend and Monica. There is something about Monica that feels like a red flag, and I don’t really like Arend, he gives me uncomfortable vibes. I enjoy following Kassie and Rooi, especially the way their investigation is unfolding.
6. I think they were assigned to this case because they are well known detectives who are very good at their jobs. They are cautious, thorough, and reliable. The commissioner likely trusts that they cannot be corrupted, meaning their investigation will remain honest and truthful. But I also think they should tread carefully, as the villains in this story are not to be underestimated.
7. I do think they are behind everything that happened in the PRIOR unit, which is quite unsettling. I also believe there is some truth in how the book reflects real life situations in South Africa.
8. I would definitely share the information with my partner and my best friend. But I don’t know if I would want to involve them, because involving them mean putting their life at risk. At the same time, being connected to me in a case like this could already put them at risk, so I might choose to tell them anyway.
9. I actually thought about this today. It would probably be something very different from my real name perhaps something Russian. For some reason, top secret identities make me think of Russian names. I would choose something like Katya or Katja, paired with a suuupper Afrikaans surname.
10. I don’t really think so, if I am being completely honest, but I haven’t given it much thought.
11. I think it was something that was overlooked. He likely didn’t realise it at the time and may have been in a rush.
12. I think she is tired and sick of not getting any answers about her family members. At this point, she is completely fed up because she has not heard anything back for years. She is no longer even surprised that the information on the case has been stolen.
13. No, this does not sound like them at all. It could have been the side they showed to their family? I am not entirely sure. It may have been a facade, or it could have been someone who genuinely cared about them.
14. I think this is a very tricky question because I am not entirely sure myself. People don’t recall seeing safes in the bedrooms, despite having been there. It is possible that they were built into the walls and disguised. I think this detail was revealed later to guide the detectives in the right direction (like what they had hid in the safes).
15. I think Moerdyk had some information about them. It is also possible that Clarissa provided the information herself… she worked with the Altman twins.
16. Yes, she was definitely too trusting, and I don’t think she should have shared that information. I would not give that kind of information to people I don’t know.
17. I expected Ernst Delport to still be alive and in hiding, but I did not expect him to be so close.
18. I think there are many parallels, like the fact that Clarissa is unaware that Kassie and Rooi are close to uncovering her entire operation is one. She continues living her life, unaware that investigations into the Altman twins will ultimately lead back to her and Barnabas.
19. I think he was afraid. He didn’t want to take responsibility and didn’t know how to handle the situation due to a lack of experience with crime investigations. He likely covered it up out of fear, lack of knowledge, and pride, as he was unwilling to ask for help.
20. I believe Kassie and Rooi will try their best to consider what Ernst says, but I don’t think there is a safe outcome for them. They are in a very dangerous situation, and I am concerned about what might happen to them. Despite this, they are making steady progress, even if they are not fully aware of it.

3. Things are about to go down. I think it means maybe her downfall is near or at least complication of things.

5. A part of me hopes they crack the case, but at the same time I have no hope seeing the kind of people they’re dealing with. They seem like the best detectives.
6. They were obviously selected because they know what they’re doing. Yes they should stay under the radar, although I doubt that will be possible for the whole duration of the case.

10. This to me was very suspicious. I think she did exactly that but then I asked myself, why would she. Did she know that evidence will be destroyed?

1. I’d wager a guess that part 1 (Clarissa and Arend) and part 2 (Kassie and Rooi) are happening simultaneously, so while the cops investigate, Clarissa and Arend are doing what we read about in the first part of the book. Even if these two parts are not happening at the same time, both Clarissa and Arend’s teams are likely to be involved in similar criminal businesses.
2. Video or photo footage of the criminal and/or unethical activities that happened in the Altman’s house.
3. It sounds like Clarissa is going to get involved with something even messier now that Barnabas is turning to something beyond their core business.
4. As someone who has never had a proper job yet (fresh out of university!), I cannot relate (yet).
5. I love them! They have a great partnership going and I am excited to follow their investigation.
6. They seem to be very good at their jobs, which is why they were assigned the case. And yes, they should definitely be very VERY careful after what happened to the other detectives.

16. Yes, anyone could pose as police. I would be upset if someone gave my address to random strangers – police or otherwise.

18. These parallels create a foreboding tone that makes one intrigued and a little fearful of what’s to come.
19. Probably just covering his own sloppiness… However, we can’t rule out the possibility that he may be in cohorts with them.
20. Not at all. Maybe they’ll be a little cautious, but I know they’ll continue to take risks to crack the case.
21. I know they are frustrated by the slow progress, but they are still making progress and that’s good!
