Q: What do you think of Vander? Is he at all what you expected?
A: I love him! And I love his house. I think he does what he can to protect his people, even if scares people away from him.Q: Did you expect Vander to help Aris? How else do you think he will help her?
A: I didn’t, but I’m so happy he did! I’m hoping we see him again in the future to see how he will help Aris.Q: In Chapter Thirty-Four, Aris visits Raker again to help him. Why do you think he is chained up?
A: Vander must be scared of him or intimidated by him.Q: At the start of Chapter Thirty-Five, Aris is given pastries. What are your favourite pastries?
A: NOW THIS is a topic I can discuss in length, all day, everyday! I’m a sucker for Milktart but I make a mean Biscoff cheesecake. When I order from somewhere, it will be those flavours or something chocolate. I’ll stop here 🤣Q: What do you think Aris will offer up to form her alliances?
A: Anything she has to give.Q: Do you think the house gave Aris her dress and the slippers?
A: Yes and I love this house so much!!! I need it.Q: What do you think the gods took from Vander?
A: I think they took the love of his life or someone close to him.Q: Why do you think Vander wants Aris to show her marks?
A: Her markings symbolises power and he wants everyone to see that.Q: Aris returns to Raker in her new dress and asks him to swear on her sword. He refuses. Why do you think he didn’t swear on it?
A: Well I know why now because I’ve finished the book 😭 but at the time, I thought he didn’t trust her.Q: Do you think Magnus’s invitation was sincere?
A: Yes, he was so sweet! But I am naive so I don’t know.Q: Did you expect Raker to sneak into the ball?
A: No but of course he did 🤌Q: What do you think of his reactions?
A: He is incredibly jealous.Q: When Aris returns to the heirs, she overhears them talking about a prophecy. Do you think she was foretold?
A: Yes. I can’t wait to read more about this!Q: Should Aris have given her hand to the heir of House Drake?
A: Yes but that’s not her life’s mission. Hopefully we see him again.Q: Do you think Aris will get the answers she seeks from the blacksmith?
A: I’d love to think so. -

– I’m definitely intrigued. He’s not as scary as his reputation implies, so there must be something more to him. My initial expectation was that he would have some kind of underlying power or presence that explains why people fear him, but right now he just feels like a general “eccentric” lord.
– Yes, I did expect him to help her. Stellan trusted him, so there must have been some kind of mutual respect or relationship there. If he had that with Stellan, it makes sense that he would extend that trust to Aris as well.
– I think it’s because he’s powerful and people are afraid of him. The only way to really control or subdue him is to keep him chained and powerless.
– A chocolate croissant or a pastéis de nata. I’m also wondering if a chocolate chip cookie counts as a pastry.
– I am not sure tbh, the only real thing she has to barter is her cup of magic that she’s trying to get. She doesn’t really have much else to offer.
– That’s a pretty common thing to happen in fantasy, a magic house, that’s enchanted to give you what you need when you ask, and it was cute to see it play out here. So yes I think it was the house.
– I’m not entirely sure, but I think it could be his family. He doesn’t seem to have anyone close to him. It could also have been someone he loved, which would explain why he’s so alone.
– I think he understands the deeper meaning behind them. Stellan clearly knew that Vander would understand, which is why he sent Aris to him. So instead of hiding them, Vander wants everyone to see them because they hold significance.
– I think there’s still a sense of pride there. He doesn’t want to be beholden to her, and there might also be a part of him that still wants the option to act against her. If he swore an oath, he’d lose that freedom.
– Yes, I do. I didn’t get any sense that it wasn’t genuine. It felt like he was being straightforward.
– No, I didn’t expect it. He was chained, and the fact that he broke those chains is actually quite scary, especially if he’s supposed to be human. Breaking metal like that isn’t easy. I also liked that he was a bit jealous seeing all the attention Aris was getting.
– Yes, I do. I think her markings identify her as the one in the prophecy, and that’s why everyone is talking about her and willing to help her.
– That promise is definitely going to come back and bite her in some way. (Prob in book 2)
– No. He already betrayed the guild for money and greed, so I don’t see why he wouldn’t do the same again.

Vander is not at all what I expected! I’m curious about the relationship he and Stellan may have had.
Yes, Stellan wouldn’t have told her to look for him unless he was certain Vander would help her. I hope he helps her somehow get through the Questral. Some tips would be nice…
Why wouldn’t he be chained up? it would be silly to not chain him up? They’ve seen his sword. They’ve seen what he looks like. Seems natural that they’d take precautions.
I sadly can’t eat pastries anymore, but I used to love a Danish.
I think that Aris will offer up something that she hasn’t thought through completely but she think will be an easy trade. Yes, she’s smart but we’ve seen that she’s not smart all of the time.
I think it’s both the house and Vander. It’s giving House of Wind vibes and we all need one.
I honestly don’t know? Power? His people? Family? All i can do is speculate at this point. SO many questions going through my mind.
He needs people to take notice of her. The marks will do that. We also don’t know if the marks mean something more so if they do then Vander is playing chess while we’re playing checkers.
Raker likely knows better than to just makes vows or promises. He understands that there are further implications to it than it just being a simple promise.
No, I don’t think it was sincere. I don’t trust him.
I didn’t expect him to sneak in but I wasn’t surprised that he did.
Yes, I think the prophecy was about her.
No, I don’t think she should have.
No, I don’t think she’ll get the answers that she wants. It seems too easy and convenient.

1. I imagined someone purely terrifying, but instead he seems like someone more layered.
2.Not fully. I expected a cost or manipulation attached to any help. I think he’ll continue helping her.
3. It suggests that Vander thinks Raker is powerful.
4.An almond or a chocolate croissant is hard to beat. I have a sweet tooth so actually anything goes 😂
5.She doesn’t have wealth or power, so her greatest currency is herself, so I am a but apprehensive about what she offer.
6.It definitely feels magical rather than an ordinary house. The house seems almost like it responds to her needs.
7. Something deeply personal like perhaps power, freedom, love, or family.
8. Because they mean something important. He likely recognises them as a sign of lineage, prophecy, or power.
9. I think he feared what the oath would bind him to and he didn’t want to be beholden to Aris.
10. Possibly polite on the surface, but likely strategic underneath.
11. Not surprising at all. Raker doesn’t seem like someone who stays away when something matters to him. His reactions suggest jealousy or protectiveness.
12. It definitely feels like the story is leaning that way. Aris is definitely not ordinary.
13. I actually think she was a bit too trusting to do so.
14. Some answers, yes, but probably not all. It might lead to bigger questions.

So far from what I expected. I expected someone older and menacing. It was a good surprise. I happen to like him.
To a certain small capacity I did feel he’d help or give her an elaborate tricky test with consequences first but I didn’t think he’d be so all in and chill.
Coz they see him as a threat so its a precaution.
I like croissants, cronuts, chocolate based pastries and jam turnovers.
Whatever she has the capacity to do
At first I thought it was Vander but then after thought it was some sort of magic making it happen. Not the house itself so that was cool!
Power or love
Its a sign of power so he wants her to appear as she was destined to be shown, not hiding but showing it off.
He didn’t want the blade to break in case he couldn’t uphold the oath
So I forgot the names of the House Of Drake leader and the other guy that gave her a necklace coz its been a week I think since I finished this, apologies! but if Magnus is the house of drake leader I dont trust him. The other polite guy seems nice tho.
I did, it was classic Raker gatecrashing. I get why he is skeptical tbh but I think Aris can trust Vander.
Yes, judging by the way they reacted I think so.
No. I dont trust him
Not everything but some answers regarding her sword.

1. Not what I expected at all! I assumed he would be broody and grumpy like Raker but he is more charming than expected!
2. I did, purely because Stellan seemed to think that he would and they were very close. It will be interesting to see if he remains helpful throughout or if an ulterior motive will arise at some point.
3. I think Vander is aware of how dangerous and volatile Raker can be and chose to keep him chained up to keep the peace in his castle
4. I love pecan pastries or pastries filled with custard!
5. I think she’ll foolishly offer up herself in some way or another – like promising favors since there is little else. She’ll do whatever it takes, that’s certain!
6. Yes! I wish my house could choose my outfits for me and gift me clothes. Sounds like a dream come true.
7. I can only assume it was someone or many people that he loved. Or possibly some power/ability of his.
8. I think there is some significance to them that he has not shared – it shows that there is something immortal about them that others would revere as well. I assume this would be to help her gain favor with the others
9. At that point, given the emotional connection brewing between them, I get the sense that he did not want to bind himself to her in any way due to his own pride and fear of how things were progressing between them
10. It’s hard to say – I barely trust anyone in this book!
11. Yes – I knew it was only a matter of time until he broke out, and I think Aris’s dress might have been a contributing factor. I knew it would stem from jealousy!
12. Yes, I do think it is her. That’s why the God of Death is looking for her
13. No – I still don’t trust anyone’s motives at this point. But I definitely thing her promises are going to come back and bite her in the future!
14. I’d like to think she’d learn a bit more about the origins of her sword!

1) I thought he would be a little bit more fearsome, dark and scary? He seems like a good person to have on your side! I wish she had summoned him sooner.
2) I did – considering his reaction toward her mentioning Stellan, I’m not at all surprised he would help. Although she is so feisty and rude to him in the beginning, when she literally summoned him to help. It was a bit strange.
3) Vander probably doesn’t trust him and that’s why he is chained up.
4) I love donuts!
5) I don’t know – I hope she doesn’t bind herself unknowingly to some immortal.
6) Yes- the house seems enchanted to provide whatever the inhabitants/guests need!
7) I think the gods took someone from Vander – considering the house is empty of everyone except his staff.
8) It seems as if Vander knows more about her marks than he is letting on. I’m half convinced it was a trap or he really wants others to see she is more than a mere human and the marks actually mean something really important/special about her.
9) I still can’t place Raker – whether or not he is actually trustworthy. And we still don’t know his full reason for going on the quest. Perhaps he knows he won’t be able to keep any oaths because he is already planning on “backstabbing” Aris.
10) I don’t trust any of the immortals! So no, I don’t think so.
11) I didn’t, but I’m glad he did. He’s very protective of Aris around the immortals, he knows a lot about them – if only he would tell Aris.
12) Maybe she was – which would explain why there is a bounty on her head.
13) No, Aris should not have made any promises to any immortals.
14) Their journey has been a literal series of unfortunate events – I hope for her sake there are some answers, but I do not feel positive about it. -

1. Vander is not what I expected at all 😭 I thought he’d be colder and more terrifying.
2. No, I really didn’t. I feel like he’s going to help her understand more about herself and the marks.
3. I think he’s chained up because people are scared of what he can do.
4. Croissants and cinnamon rolls forever 😭
5. Probably information or loyalty. I don’t think she really has much else right now.
6. Honestly yes 😭 nothing in this world feels normal anymore.
7. I think they took something powerful from him, maybe part of himself or his magic.
8. I think the marks mean more than Aris realises and Vander knows exactly what they are.
9. I think swearing on the sword actually means something serious, and he didn’t want to lie to her
10. Not fully. It felt a little too perfect
11. No 😭 but him showing up was kinda iconic. His reactions made it obvious he cares more than he admits.
12. At this point, yes. Too many things around Aris feel connected for it to be random.
13. Probably not 😭
14. I think she’ll get some answers, but not the full truth yet.

@sirralton
1. I expected more powerful and scary. I didn’t really get that even though his character was somewhat nonchalant.
2. I did expect him to help, but it seems more as an advisory role rather than actual help.
3. His reputation as a beast lives up to the situation. I think he is unpredictable and they don’t like that.
4. Puff pastries, butter croissants and custard Danishes.
5. All I kept thinking was the sword.
6. I think so. It seems like it responds to desires.
7. I think they took someone he really loves romantically or family.
8. A display of power and rebellion against the gods.
9. He does not strike me as someone who would want to swear on anything or tie himself to any expectation.
10. It struck me as so, yes.
11. I did not expect that at all. Very cool and badass. I think he wanted to see how Aris was approaching her strategy/goal.
12. I think so, yes.
13. No, that was so awkward, but her goal is strong so I doubt cares beyond it.
14. I hope so. I have been at the edge of my seat.
