I didn’t necessarily expect her to have more injuries. The sword saving her was perfectly timed, and even though it felt lucky, you could feel the weight of what just happened.
Yes, a maze is a smart way to separate everyone and disorientate them. It builds up your stress and fear in that moment as you’re not sure what’s behind the corner – a competitor, a trap or a dead end.
I suspected it had something to do with her skin. It sensed something in her or who she is.
Harlan intrigues me. I’m not sure if he really even hates her – there just feels like there’s more to it or he knows more.
I really dislike Cadoc. He showed her the dagger so he could goad her and let her know that it was him.
I have far reaching ideas about the blade and why it chose her and who she really is.
It seemed as though Aris had no other choice than to stand and face the beast. She proves that she has courage in that moment; just how much this means to her and that she’s not going to just give up. I really like her as our main character so far.
I wasn’t surprised that she helped Kira. We have seen her character help others before no matter what she says about not helping people. It shows us that she still has humanity left; that she’s going to help if and where she can. I hope that their friendship continues.
I expected to see Zane again as I’m curious about why he’s going through the Questral but I didn’t expect him at the gate. Although, I’m glad he was at that moment.
No, I don’t think she will regret pairing with them. It was inevitable.
The immortals were.. interesting. Those few pages really managed to cut the tension and give us a few moments to breathe and laugh. The immortals seem just as curious about the humans as they are about the immortals.
Something is happening on that side of the gate. It’s not all sunshine and roses. Just as much as Aris’ world is suffering, it seems so are theirs but in a different way?
Aris was smart to do that. Pelas was an entire vibe though, the notes he was writing were some of my favourite parts of the book so far. He didn’t really think much of humans and Aris used that to her advantage. We see her strength used in a different way.
Yes, as we don’t know too much about the Questral or what really happens at the end. Especially as Stellan wouldn’t (or couldn’t) talk about it.
When Ellis noticed the marking he immediately seemed to know what they were. I think it ties to why that specific sword chose Aris and he suspects who or what she may be.
I don’t necessarily think any of them would betray the pact. However, there may be moments of low trust because up to this point they haven’t had reason to trust anyone. Is it betrayal if they agreed that the quest comes first?
I’m not really sure that the Great Houses are so great anymore. It seems as though everyone is struggling and it may be that they’re hiding their struggle to retain their status of a Great House. Zane may see the Questral as a way to help.
Harlan = sus. There’s so much more going on behind that little mask of his. I know that he’s supposedly going through the Questral on request by the King but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he’s always near Aris.
I’m eager to find out the truth about the gods. At this point I’m taking in all the information and comments certain characters have made about them and just trying to put it all together before I speculate further.

I honestly expected Aris to come out of the arrow attack far more injured, so the moment with the sword saving her did feel very lucky, almost too perfectly timed, but it also hints that something deeper might be guiding or protecting her. The maze felt like a very intentional and clever way to break everyone apart and force individual survival, making the culling more psychological as well as physical. The snake stopping for Aris seemed significant rather than random, like it sensed something different about her, possibly tied to her markings or destiny. Harlan ignoring her despite threatening her felt calculated, like he is watching and waiting rather than acting impulsively, which makes him more dangerous. What Cadoc shows Aris in the graveyard adds a darker layer to the world and suggests there is a history she does not yet understand. The blade she receives feels like it belonged to someone powerful or chosen, and it seems drawn to her resilience and refusal to give up. When Aris stands and faces the beast, it is such a defining moment because she chooses courage over fear, showing growth and determination. Her helping Kira to reach the gate shows that even in a brutal competition she still holds onto her humanity. Zane’s return was surprising but also satisfying because it shows he may be more loyal than expected. I do think Aris might eventually regret trusting Zane and Kira, not necessarily because they will betray her immediately, but because trust in this world feels dangerous. The immortals are intriguing but unsettling, especially their interest in clothing and items, which makes them feel disconnected from normal life. Their declining birth rate could suggest a curse, imbalance, or consequence of something the gods did or abandoned. Aris tricking Pelas was clever and shows her intelligence, proving she can survive not just with strength but with strategy. Learning that immortals once competed in the Questral makes its current deadly nature even more disturbing, as if something has changed the purpose of it entirely. The immortals likely know more about Aris’s markings than they are saying, which makes them both valuable and suspicious. Out of the trio, I feel like Zane is the most likely to betray the pact, especially with his unclear motives. Him possibly leaving home without permission suggests desperation or a need to prove something, which could push him to make risky choices. Harlan constantly appearing near Aris feels intentional, like their paths are tied together in a way that has not been revealed yet. Xara’s warning about the gods suggests something significant happened, maybe betrayal or neglect, that caused the gods to turn away, leaving both mortals and immortals to suffer the consequences.

Yes I thought she might be shot in the leg or something as protagonists usually get injured too. I don’t think was necessarily lucky – this is obviously part of the bigger plot so I somehow knew that she was going to bond with a special sword.

Yeah it kind of reminds me the book Powerless by Lauren Roberts where their in a maze at the end of the book – I really enjoyed this scene and it kept my heart PUMPING

But we knew she wouldn’t die – because she’s the protagonist and cannot die so early in the story – so yes she was VERY brave but we knew it was going to end in her favour.

2. Absolutely. Its so easy to get lost in a maze of that magnitude and participants getting lost also fuels their panic and fear and they start to make mistakes more easily.
3. The snake clearly sensed something about her, and who she truly is. It was such an interesting moment and I’m eager to find out the significance soon
4. I can’t wait to find out what her beef is with Harlan! I’d like to think that whatever Aris thinks happened was actually not the case and that he actually has no desire to harm innocents – which is why he leaves her be.
5. I don’t like Cadoc one bit. He clearly wanted a reaction out of her and was fanning her fury so that she gets emotional and makes a mistake.

Harlan deep down wants to protect her? Maybe he was ordered to do so in some way coz of who she actually is. I think he has an inkling of her real identity.
I hate Cadoc so much. He wants to get under her skin and inside her head by torturing her emotionally… also coz he is an insufferable jerk that likes to gloat.
Perhaps a God? Or a very high being. She has the characteristics of a God/higher being? And her brave & helpful nature could also be a factor.
It was so cool to see, I’ve been wanting to see Aris use her sword more and she did so very smartly.
It shows that Aris is loyal,kind & helpful. She also possesses empathy for others which is sweet.

Aris is being resourceful and smart yet again! Pelas is too cocky and arrogant for his own good he deserved being “tricked”.
The gods perhaps did that to discourage immortals from participating in it or to make it more of a harder experience that will only have worthy people partake in it so they could find the chosen or all powerful one easier, which is gonna be Aris.

1. I thought she would escape unscathed. I didn’t anticipate a sword choosing her at all.
2. Yes, it is to lower the total challengers entering the gates to the other side.

I think its way to early for Aris to get seriously injured. Apart from her resilence , her wit and quick movements always assist in her narrow close calls in the Culling. In terms of the sword, I had a feeling it would land in her palm when she needed it the most. Aris is strong with a mysterious past, I just don’t think she realizes it yet. Her doubt, memories and guild cloud her thoughts. Excited to see what happens next now that she has a powerful sword.
I think the maze is a way to mess with the challengers mentally, create fear and see to what end they will go to make it to the gate. It also seems to be entertainment and a game for the King.
It was a silver snake and I think it stopped because it could sense the silver markings on her skin.
I’m not sure why Harlan protects Aris in his own way, despite mainting the cold demeanor.
Well I wasn’t shocked, but also how dare he! I hope Aris gets the blade back, it’s all she has left of Stellon.
My thoughts are that the blade must belong to powerful God, who has passed away. I think it was drawn to her pure soul, resilence , strong character and her will to fight against all odds. Instead of admit defeat.
Her saving Kira, highlights Aris character more. She doesn’t like to see others suffer or face death. If she can she will always throw her life infront of the inflicter to save the other person. It’s not so much of a thought, Aris just does it and hopes for the best.
Well they made a pact and for now it serves all of their best interests.
The immortals are hiding something and they have their own hierachy system. Curious to learn more about them and the truth behind what Starside is facing.
Aris is smart. It serves as a reminder that you should never understimate anyone, she played into his weakness and went along with Pelas superiority ego.
I wasn’t shocked. It made me more interested in finding out more about what led to the Great Divide and what hasn’t been shared about it. I’m not sure why it is a death sentence but it does seem both sides were affected with repurcussions since the divide and something is amiss.
At the moment I think the markings signifies she is a descandent of someone powerful and feared that surpasses all Gods strength.
I still think it will be Kira, I don’t trust her but Zane has yet to share why he left Sterling house in the dead of the night.
We will have to see why. I think there is more to Zane’s story and I don’t think its about the need to prove himself. Sterling House is well respected. He could have discovered something, and left to fix things before its too late. He is quite tightlipped , I’m curious.
They are obviously drawn to one another and maybe Harlan is and has always been Aris protecter. Quite exicted for the plot to thicken when it comes to these two. We’ve also only read about Aris perspective about Harlan and have yet to see what he thinks about their relationship.
Something is amiss and Aris needs to find Vander Evren for the truth.

– I loved that. She used his assumption that she was beneath him to her advantage. It showed that she’s actually clever, quick thinking, and very capable.
– I think something has changed. Maybe the source of magic used to be more appealing, but now with the threat of death and whatever is out there at night, it’s not worth the risk anymore.
– I think they know exactly what she is. I don’t think it’s a curse at all. I think it’s actually something powerful, like she’s some kind of fey or immortal princess or god-blessed.
– I don’t want any of them to betray it. I want to believe they’ll stay loyal and become genuine friends.
– I think he wants to prove himself. Everyone in this world is struggling, and he probably wants to help his family or his people in whatever way he can.
– It feels really suspicious. The world is huge, yet they keep ending up near each other over and over again. It feels like something is pulling them together.
– I think it ties back to whatever split the worlds into two realms. I also think Aris and her legacy are connected to that, but she just doesn’t know it yet because she doesn’t understand her markings.

I did not anticipate her sustaining further injuries; however, the sword saving her appears to be fortunate and may foreshadow a larger plot twist.
The maze is an effective strategy to separate participants and reduce their numbers.
The snake likely senses something about Aris that has not yet been revealed, possibly linked to her markings.
Harlan is an intriguing character. It is unclear whether his behaviour stems from genuine dislike or an attempt to distance her for her own protection.
I dislike Cadoc, as he was clearly taunting her. He reminds me of Jack Barlow from Fourth Wing.
I am uncertain who it may have originally belonged to, but it was likely drawn to her resilience and strength.
This highlights her bravery and reinforces why the sword chose her.
Aris has previously shown a willingness to help others, which is a testament to her character. I am not surprised that she assisted Kira.
I was not expecting Zane to appear. His presence is unpredictable, and he may become a potential ally.
I do not think she will proceed alone. Given the high-stakes nature of the quest, having trusted companions is essential.
The immortals were intriguing yet unsettling. Their behaviour was unusual, and I do not trust them.
This may explain their apparent fear of the night.
It was very clever of Aris to outwit Pelas, particularly as he underestimates humans.
I was surprised. It may be connected to immortals receiving greater magic from the gods.
Ellis appears to have identified a link between her markings and her sword.
I do not believe any of them will intentionally break the pact, although circumstances may compel them to do so.
It is likely he is trying to support his house, which may be struggling, even if this is not widely known.
Harlan remains suspicious, and I anticipate that more will be revealed about him.
I am uncertain at this stage; perhaps they feel threatened.

2. Yes, I was already getting claustrophobic just thinking about being stuck in a maze. It’s a brutal way to divide and lessen the participants
3. I think the snake sensed something different about Aris. Whether it’s her markings or her possible connection to something ancient, it felt intentional rather than random.

⚔️Aris stays being lucky and I think it is a very unlikely scenario for her to be saved like that but I’ll take it because it makes for a good cinematic moment.
⚔️I think it definitely is smart – especially because the maze is a threat itself.
⚔️I’m starting to realise all these weird occurrences have to do with the hidden part of Aris we don’t know all the details of yet. I think she’s carrying a power/ability we do not have a sense of yet.
