Thorn Season Day Five

At the start of Chapter Twenty-Three, Alissa is surprised by her father’s visit. For the first time, he talks of Alissa’s mother. Why do you think he chooses this moment in time to do so?

We learn that Fiona, Alissa’s adoptive mother, chose to sign the papers to say that Alissa was her birth daughter. Why do you think Fiona decided to do this? Do you think Alissa’s shoulders are now lighter knowing that Fiona wasn’t forced to sign the papers?

Alissa’s father reveals that Garret took sole blame for the missing prisoners. It seems that Garret is still trying to be the better person. Why do you think that is? Is it for Alissa or so that he can atone for all the Wielder lives he has taken?

In Chapter Twenty-Four, Carmen shares that she would rather play king than the king’s bride. Do you think this gives clearer insight into why Carmen may be sleuthing behind Erik’s back and potentially working with the copycats?

Keil gifts Alissa a piece of Dayglass. Why do you think he does this?

Why do you think Junius didn’t want to know who accused his family of harbouring Wielders?

At the end of Chapter Twenty-Five, the unthinkable happens. Alissa’s father is killed. How do you think this will impact her going forward?

At Alissa’s father’s funeral, Briar confronts Alissa and attempts to recruit her. What do you think of Alissa saying “[t]ake your Hunter filth…and get off my lands”?

Do you think this will cause Briar to come after Alissa?

What do you think of Chapter Twenty-Eight?

    1. He knows he’s losing control over her. It feels like a last attempt to connect and explain himself before it’s too late.

    2. Fiona did it out of love. She chose Alissa fully as her daughter. Yes, I think it lifts a huge weight, knowing she was wanted, not forced.

    3. It’s both. He wants to protect Alissa, and he also wants to make up for his past. Guilt seems to drive a lot of his choices.

    4. It explains a lot. She wants control, not romance.

    5. It’s a symbol of trust and protection. He’s giving her something rare and valuable because he believes in her.

    6. He already knows the truth deep down. Hearing the name would just make it harder to ignore.

    7. It will push her to fully choose her own path. There’s no chance for closure now.

    8. Powerful and brave. She’s finally standing up for herself and her people without fear.

    9. Most likely, yes. Briar doesn’t seem like someone who handles rejection well.

    10. It feels intense and emotional. Everything seems to be coming together

    1) I think he knew Alissa was struggling with her choices and he was worried she would fall for the king

2)I think she did it because she loved her father and she wanted them to have a good life after her death.

    3) I think it is both. He knows Alissa might never forgive him for what he’s done but he will die trying.

4)Yes. I think Carmen wants the throne

    5) To show her how much he trusts her and he wants her to trust him as well

6)I think he didnt want to feel any more pain than he is already experiencing and it also wouldn’t bring them back

    7) I think she is going to become more ruthless (and also more reckless) because she wants vengeance

    8) she is obviously still hurting and doesn’t care about what she is saying and it shows that she blames the Capewells for her father’s death

    9) I don’t think she will do it publicly because the king has taken a liking to Alissa and she wouldnt want to cross him, but I definitely think she will find a way to do it and blame it on someone else

    10) I felt really sad for Garret and it seemed like Alissa completely lost her humanity with that last line in the chapter

i think he just wanted to be vulnerable with her and he knew shed been begging for glimpses of her mother and i think he was just finally ready to give her something

fiona cared for Alissas father and maybe didnt agree with the killing of wielders and therefore wanted to sign the papers to make sure Alissa was safe. I think Alissa should definitely feel some relief knowing that Fiona signed the papers out of her own will.

both, he is driven by guilt

ive liked carmen from the start but didnt know if i could trust her…. but i think her intentions are becoming clearer. i think she wants to take over the kingdom.

to show her that he trusts her and he wants her to reciprocate the trust.

    im not sure actually

she is fueled by anger and this will change her whole trajectory

justified – no one likes briar, i think she might also think briar had something to do with her fathers death maybe?

    of course

Alissa is loosing her humanity because of what shes going through. shes not thinking straight or about anyone elses feelings for that matter.

Home girl is losing her mind, I think he is just being a parent, checking in on her and helping her carry the load.

I think they’re all trying to help her. I think it’s a great comfort to her for sure.

Love this guy man, such a quality gent.

    Perhaps.

    As a symbol of trust.

    Ignorance is bliss.

I think she will become more reckless to be honest.

Grief has no filter my dudes.

I hope not. But people are people.

Shame, it was an emotional – a lot happened and homegirl lost her solid ground. Let’s see how it unfolds.

    1. Perhaps he knows his life is in danger.
    2. I think she loved her husband so much and knew that she wouldn’t be around to see what happens and he would at least be left with someone to love him. Alissa would have been killed if she didn’t do that
3.I still think he loves Alissa or he feels guilty about something.
4.Yes, perhaps she is trying to take him down or start a revolution.
5.To show her he is on her side.
6.I think he already knew the answer to that already.
7.I think she will be even more motivated to save weilders and stand up against Erik and Briar
8.She was so brav for that because Briar could easily create false evidence against her to have a reason to kill her.
    9.YES, absolutely
10.I think Alissa is losing herself and she is just seeing red at this point. Chapter 28 was very emotional but I think she needs something or someone to ground her.

    1. It could be many reasons. Maybe he wanted to connect with her because he was worried about the decisions she was making. And worried over how reckless she is.

    2. I think that was such a warm moment in the story. Usually, you expect some drama or blackmail thag led to Fiona signing the papers but in this case it was not – which really took me by surprise! I think it was a huge moment for Alissa to know that it was out of genuine affection rather than obligation.

    3. Garret honestly gives me whiplash. One moment his actions seem so cold or selfish and in other instances, its more selfless. Its hard to say what his real motive is at the moment.

    4. Definitely- it shows that Carmen would not be opposed to the crown and there is no telling what she might be capable of doing to get it. I also think there is a certain strength and independence to her words.

    5. Maybe as a measure of trust – to show he trusts her, and also shows whether she does in fact trust him, or is willing to keep his secrets at the very least.

    6. It was strange – maybe he wanted to feign ignorance or maybe it was something he knew already.

    7. She is going to be consumed by her anger and it’s going to make her even more reckless with her decisions and actions.

    8. I think she wanted to exert some power over Briar considering their history.

    9. Absolutely- she seems to hate Alissa and is probably going to strike at some point

    10. It was intense – she is so lost in her anger

    1. I think he felt like this was the right moment to do . He feels like this information will be most beneficial to her now.

    2. I think she did this to protect her. Yes I’m sure Alissa doesn’t feel quirky anymore

    3. I think Alissa definitely plays her part in this.. he’s trying to prove there’s still good in him

    4. Definitely.. I won’t be surprised if he’s planning to steal the throne

    5. I think it’s to show her how much he trust her

    6. Because he does not want to do something that would get the rest of his family killed

    7. This could very much be her villain origin story… nothing is going to stand in her way of revenge now

    8. Alissa hates her with a passion. I’m sure she somewhat blames briar for her dad’s passing aswell.

    9. I think it will.

    10. It was very emotional… I did not expect Alissa to lose her dad in this way so it did draw a few tears

    1) He might believe it’s his last chance, considering how things are escalating at every turn, and he wants to give her a little bit of something to hold on to.

    2) Perhaps she didn’t want him to be alone, and this way it made sure that he would always have Alissa – and I’m sure she knew he would do everything to protect her. But, this also tied him to her (Fiona) and his responsibilities so he couldn’t just run away anymore.

    3) Honestly, I have no idea what to think about Garret. Maybe he feels responsible for those Wielders being held captive so it is his way of atoning for it.

    4) Definitely! I think this shows that firstly, she is ambitious, and that she will do whatever it takes. It makes me wonder if she is working with the copycats or not, because how would that further her agenda of being “king”? Anyway… I really do like her character, even if she is being a little shady.

    5) I see it as a sign of trust – showing Alissa that he trusts her, and in turn she can trust him.

    6) I don’t think it matters to him – what matters more is the fate of the Wielders and his family.

    7) I think she will be devastated and angry. I know I was devastated and angry! He was truly her only family and she loved him dearly. I think this will definitely fuel her rage and her search for the compass.

    8) This might not play in her favour and make Briar suspicious towards Alissa – as Alissa is clearly showing she has no love for Hunters and what they stand for, which is clearly almost an act of treason (probably, in Briar’s eyes)

    9) I think Briar will use this as a reason to look more closely at Alissa.

    10) It’s a very big tipping/turning point in the story – Alissa killing her attacker and then lashing out at Garret, laying out all her thoughts and plans, and blatantly telling him she won’t be handing over the compass if and when she finds it. She’s being fuelled by rage, hurt, revenge now. Especially how she ends the chapter by saying that if the King asks her her opinion on the Hunters, she’ll gladly have him [the king] kill them.

I think her father knows he cannot protect her anymore – he knows that maybe this is the time when something bad happens and he wants her to know more

Yes I think she now knows she was truly loved by both women – what wonderful insight

Maybe it is for both – I know in his weird way he wants to show Alissa that he cares for her

Yes that does make a lot of sense – Carmen could be wanting the crown

He is showing her that he trusts her, even if it is a small step

He was already grieving, he didn’t want more pain

I think it will really harden her even more and unleash fury into her decisions which is where things can go wrong

I was shocked that she was not going to bow down to Briar – but she is being more and more reckless

Yes, Briar has never liked her and I think she is putting a huge target on her back with or without the king’s support

Her anger is taking over – it was a very emotional and difficult scene

    1) I think he senses that he’s losing his grip on the situation and that Alissa is drifting away from his influence. It feels like a desperate, last-resort attempt to explain his past choices before things spiral completely out of control.

    2) Fiona likely did it out of genuine love for both Alissa and her father, wanting to ensure Alissa had protection. Knowing it was a choice made out of affection rather than obligation must be a huge relief for Alissa.

    3) It feels like a mix of both. He seems to be battling a massive amount of internal guilt over his past as a Hunter, and he’s trying to prove to her (and himself), that he’s capable of being a better person.

    4) Yes, I think she wants to dismantle the current power structure and gain control herself.

    5) He’s handing her a piece of his trust and daring her to reciprocate.

    6) He already knows, or at least has a gut feeling. Hearing it said out loud would make the betrayal even more painful.

7)This will be the final turning point that will push her from being cautious to reckless

    8) I’m glad she’s finally being brave and standing up for herself, but she is being careless and not thinking about possible consequences.

    9) Yes. Blair is not the type of person to let something like that go

    10) It was quite emotional. It made me worry about the path Alissa is about to go on and whether she’ll be able to come back from it.
