Thorn Season Day Seven

At the end of Chapter Thirty-Four, we get the impression that things are going to change forever. What do you make of Alissa using her spectre to punch the king?

What do you think of Keil’s reaction to learning that Alissa is a Wielder?

Keil shoulders the blame of the attack and when Alissa tries to say something Keil asks her to let him do this. What do you think of this? What did you feel in this moment?

Does it bring some comfort knowing that Keil’s sacrifice meant that Junius could get away?

In the heat of the moment Keil whispered something into Alissa’s ear. She is quick to make her way to the location. The two of them share a soft and sweet moment before being interrupted by the guards and Keil’s men. It is there that it is revealed that Keil has a title. What do you think of this?

When Goren tries to separate Keil and Alissa, Alissa responds. What do you think of Alissa’s strength?

Alissa’s first stop back at the palace is to talk to Sabira. What do you think of how Alissa handles the situation and exposes the truths Sabira hid. What do you think of the back and forth of the conversation?

Towards the end of Chapter Thirty- Seven, Alissa reveals that she can understand how Erik savoured the taste of people’s terror. What do you think of the change in Alissa, from when we met her first to now?

“I don’t agree with the path you’re choosing… But I’ll walk beside you, every step. Even if that means watching you tie yourself to a ship on fire.” Tari says this to Alissa in response to being sent away. What do you think of the bond the two of them have? We’ve seen it in bits and bobs throughout the book.

Do you think their friendship can be one-sided sometimes?

What do you think of the new role Tari has received?

At the end of Chapter Thirty-Eight, we finally see some life breathed into Perla. What do you think of her comment on the last page about Wielders?

Do you think Sabira is right? That Alissa’s scheme requires more skill than what she possesses?

Garret finally re-enters the scene in Chapter Thirty-Nine. What do you think he has been up to, based on his current dishevelled appearance?

Erik reveals that he would have waited for Alissa to join court as he has only ever had eyes for her. What do you think of this?

When Alissa returns to her rooms to find the note left by Keil, Garret comes looking for her. What do you think of everything he has revealed? What do you think of the end of the chapter?

    1) She didn’t mean to but didn’t see any other option. I think someone noticed but we are not sure who yet.

2)I was confused because I thought the “lock picker” joke was him alluding to him knowing

3)I was in awe of Keil and I felt really emotional

4)Yes but it feels like foreshadowing. The king doesnt just let things go.

5)I did not see it coming. I was surprised at the revelation that the Ansoran ruler is not as cruel as the rumours alleged.

6)I think Alissa possesses a strength different to other Weilders and it makes her special

7)I was annoyed at Alissa at this point. Sabira was clearly vulnerable and Alissa was being cruel.

    8) She has become a lot harder than she was in the beginning. I didn’t like this side of her but I can understand how everything she’s been through brought her to this point.

9)I think Tari is a lot more committed to Alissa than vise versa. Tari deserves better.

    10) yes. 100%. It’s like Tari is always at Alissa’s service.

    11) I was really proud of her..nobody deserved it more. The scene made me so emotional.

    12) I must say Perla really surprised me. The mystery of her character was well executed. I never would have thought she was an ally.

    13) Yes. Alissa is in over her head.

    14) Garret is so hot and cold, I thought he might have been on the hunt

    15) I think Erik knows more than he lets on

    16) I think he is trying to be too many things at once.. he cannot please the court and do what’s best for Alissa

    1. Powerful and satisfying. It’s her finally refusing to be scared or silent anymore.

    2. Supportive and calm. He doesn’t treat her differently

    3. Emotional. It shows how far he’s willing to go for her.

    4. Yes. It makes the sacrifice feel meaningful, not wasted.

    5. Really sweet, then shocking. The title adds another layer to who Keil really is and what he’s risking.

    6. Strong and confident.

    7. Well. She stayed calm but firm. The back-and-forth shows how smart and prepared she’s become.

    8. She’s hardened. She understands power now in a way she didn’t before.

    9. Beautiful and emotional.

    10. Yes, a bit.

    11. It suits her. She’s capable, brave, and finally getting recognition.

    12. It shows growth. She’s starting to question what she’s been taught.

    13. Partly. Alissa has heart and courage, but she still has a lot to learn.

    14. Probably running, hiding, and helping where he can.

    15. Uncomfortable. It feels more obsessive than romantic.

    16. Heavy and emotional. A lot comes out at once.

    1. I’m happy she is finally exposing herself. However, I am also worried about Erik’s reaction to this.
    2. I suspect he knew all along but he doesn’t want her to know that he knew.
    3. I feel this moment solidified their bond and I squealed because I could sense he cared for her and this proved it.
    4. Yes and No, because knowing Erik he will find a way to get Junius back
    5. It’s a strong moment because the quiet intimacy makes the interruption hit harder and the reveal of Keil’s title feel impactful and well timed rather than forced.
    6. Alissa’s response shows quiet but undeniable strength, proving she is not passive or easily controlled and that she can hold her ground even when confronted by authority or danger.
    7. I think she is starting to realize her power is different and she is starting to gain some control over it
    8. I think she could have handled it better however it was understandable given what has happened thus far.
    9. I see some character growth here in this scene because she sees Erik is not good but she is also realizing that she has become dark herself
    10. Their bond is strong and shows that Tari unconditionally follows Alissa.
    11. I think sometimes Alissa is selfish in her decsion-making and Tari often has to carry the weight of the relationship but she is happy to do so.
    12. The role suits Tari’s quiet strength and sense of responsibility.
    13. Yes I think power comes at a cost and Alissa is not thinking clearly enough to wield it
    14. I think he was chasing weilders or trying to help them. It’s still unclear.
    15. It was unsettling rather than romantic showing he was never genuine
    16. Everything Garret reveals raises the stakes dramatically. We can see from here it’s about to go down

  4. Crystal Govender (@readwithceee) Avatar

    1. I feel like there’s no going back from this. She’s going to be exposed

    2. I feel like he gets a sense of understanding of her behaviour and maybe also a sense of pride

    3. The tension was so high in this moment . Keil just wants to protect Alissa but she is scared for him

    4. Yes! I was really scared that they might kill him

    5. I did not know expect this. He’s basically royalty!

    7. I definitely think she’s the strongest of the bunch

    8. She was very witty to use this tactic as it basically left Sabira cornered

    9. She’s become much more confident

    10. I feel like it’s strong.Tari would definitely lay her life down for Alissa if needed and I think she knows this which is why she sent her away.

    11. Yes but I think it is more unconsciously done on alissas end

    12. It was definitely deserved!

    13. She keeps surprising me.. I’ll admit she’s growing on me

    14. I believe there is some truth to it. If not able to control Alissa could very much be a threat to herself and everyone around her

    15. Realistically probably dealing with one of brairs errands

    16. He stresses me out to be honest. He gives me toxic boyfriend vibes

    17. I feel like this man thinks he can carry the weight of the whole world on his shoulders.

    1) That was very unexpected, that she basically exposed herself – it also shows how out of control Alissa is at the moment…

    2) I did expect him to be accepting of it – he is already so enamoured by Alissa, her being a Wielder is perfect. Although dangerous.

    3) He is protecting her! I loved that… and the fact that he realised it immediately. It was a really tense moment, and she was also very lucky Keil was around when it happened – especially as most suspected he was a Wielder already.

    4) Yes – definitely. Although I do feel it’s just delaying the inevitable.

    5) I knew it! He isn’t just some diplomat, but someone of great importance back in Ansora. Although I do believe there is so much more to it than what has been shared with us…

    6) Here it is again, that she is quite a lot stronger than those that have been Wielding freely for so long… I am interested to see if more will be revealed about her strength as a Wielder.

    7) The beginning of their conversation was very tense and heated – a lot of blame and accusations… But I was surprised at what we learnt and how Alissa had figured it out. I think she handled it well, considering we know how Sabira feels about Wielders.

    8) She has definitely changed quite a bit – not necessarily power hungry, but a lot more understanding of what power can do and bring. But it is also terrifying, as if she is also slowly becoming the villain.

    9) I think they are very close – and Tari cares very much for Alissa.

    10) I think so – I think there is a power imbalance in their friendship, with Alissa obviously being the one that holds a lot of the power (especially as she is a noble, nothing to do with her Wielding)

    11) This new role for Tari is firstly life-changing, but it also shows that Alissa fully trusts her and her decisions, that Tari has the best of intentions.

    12) I suspect that she might know about Alissa being a wielder. That’s a very direct comment.

    13) I think Alissa is a little out of her depth and she is running on anger and revenge – so yes, possibly.

    14) Not sure – maybe fretting over Alissa! Or looking for the compass.

    15) Erik is such a difficult character to get a grasp on, he is both cruel and kind. I do think he cares about Alissa, but I wonder if there is a hidden agenda there.

    16) That was a twist I did not see coming – finding out who really killed her father. That must be a terrible realisation, to know that Garret knew all this time. But, it certainly makes sense that the threats were coming from someone close by, and not necessarily the copy cats. The end of the chapter was so tense – and now Briar knows about Alissa… and she is definitely going to tell the king. Very much unravelling all of Alissa’s plans.

I was really shocked about her lack of control and her true emotions!

He seems to have always suspected and was just waiting for her to trust him with that information

I was feral with the cuteness of him doing that and saving her life – he really likes and cares about her that much

Yes that was a small part of it

I did always suspect he was royalty!

I was impressed and a little worried because it seems to be unnatural that she is so strong based on their reactions

I think Alissa was being a bit cruel but I know time is running out

Losing her father changed her and is hardening her heart

It seems that Tari truly is a wonderful person and friend – she deserved more page time

Yes it can be, I know I sometimes suck at responding to people and that can be frustrating for any friendship

I am so glad – she is so trustworthy and it suits her perfectly

I was so happy it was revealed she was an ally – she is a genius in the way she has presented herself

I think so – she doesn’t really have all the tools or support

At first I thought he had hurt more people hunting

That was a bit creepy because it means he has been watching her and might now more than he is letting on

It was shocking – I think Garret is already digging a grave deeper for himself every time he talks

    1. That was such a shocking moment. It was a long time coming considering her lack of control but my jaw still dropped when it happened.

    2. I wondered if he suspected based on her actions and his calm reaction made me think a part of him knew deep down.

    3. I think it shows the depth of Keil’s affection for Alissa and how willing he is to protect her. I was a little annoyed that Alissa does not take much accountability for her reckless actions though.

    4. Yes, Junius seemed like a good person so I was glad he got away

    5. I suspected that he had a close connection to the crown and some sort of title so it wasnt too much of a surprise.

    6. She’s very strong and it would be interesting to understand just how much if she doesn’t hold back

    7. She has a crueler, colder streak to her actions

    8. They are as close as siblings. It’s sweet

    9. Yes, especially with how Alissa disregarded Tari during their underground trip.

    10. I think it’s well deserved considering the friendship and loyalty she has shown Alissa.

    11. It was great to see some of Perla’s backbone! I do think the power might go to Alissas head

    12. Possibly. I think Alissa has an arrogance that will lead to her downfall if she doesn’t stop to really think about her plans and actions

    13. Gareth’s role in all of this is so unclear. It’s difficult to say what he was up to and who’s side he is on

    14. I mean, his obsession with her seemed clear from the beginning but it started earlier than I realized which is a little worrisome considering how old she would have been

    15. That was intense and I didn’t see the twist coming regarding who killed Alissa’s father. She already hated Briar so this is all the incentive she needs to end her honestly. Emotion is going to drive her even more now

  9. Monique van Noordwyk (digitalbookshelff) Avatar

I think she reacted out of anger and she can be glad that Keil the blame for her.

He was clearly shocked but he also finally understood what she meant when she said she could never be happy as a Wielder.

He wanted to protect her, I felt relieved because otherwise the king would’ve killed because of her power

    Yes

I expected there to be a secret title or something of more importance with me.

I liked that Goren was surprised by Alissas strength and also that’s how they found thats she’s also a Wielder

I think she handled it very well because she gave Sabira the opportunity to come clean and explain herself even though alissa already knew the truth. I think the back and forth conversation was needed for the storyline

I found it quite sad because she changed because of revenged for her father.

I think it’s a very sweet bond and a friendship that both alissa and tari need in their lives

    Yes, Alissa sometimes forsake Tari

I was surprised but it also made sense because Tari is her best friend and the best person for the role.

I think it’s true what she says about one Wielder can do more damage than people think

No cause alissa has proved herself in many ways

It sounds like he has been looking for the compass to get it before alissa does.

He is trying to sweeten her up.

I think he wants to be transparent with her and he wants her to show him that he cares about him

  10. Katie (@katie.read.me) Avatar

Hej! I was like she did what???

Surely, this late in the story it should be unsurprising.

He cares about her, that isn’t going to change.

Ofc, a wasted sacrifice is the worst.

There had to be a close connection to crown/tittle so that made sense.
We’d hope she would be worth her money.

I don’t rate Alissa, she can miss me. I get that she’s also been through a lot but I just don’t vibe w her.

Friends who feel like magic are such a rare find. I am a sucker for that in a book.

Defs, but hello, Alissa, so are we surprised?

    Pull through w the backbone!

Let her die at this rate bro. Garret, okay, well he is in and out so much its hard to place him.

    Let him do it.

Its tickets for Briar but again, are we really surprised.
